    • Covid Update – Return to School 9 September
      • On Monday 6 September, the Prime Minister announced that schools will be able to open for ALL students from Thursday 9 September. We are therefore looking forward to welcoming Rongotai College students back onto our campus on Thursday. We are asking all students to be at school by 8.50am on Thursday and to report directly to their Form Rooms, where we will have a live-streamed school assembly. We expect boys to be in the correct school uniform and clean-shaven. We would ask them not to congregate in reception or the corridors. At Alert Level 2, the Ministry of Health has outlined that schools are safe environments for children, young people, and staff. We will be implementing processes that will enable us to ensure that we know who is at school and who our staff and students have been in close contact with. We will also be taking enhanced hygiene and cleaning measures to keep everyone safe. Our Health and Safety Plan outlines a range of processes that we operate during Alert Level 2. These include: · Following appropriate hygiene processes · Use of hand sanitizer · Contact tracing through attendance checking and requiring students to stay on-site during the school day · Encouraging students to bring devices to school. Please note: At Alert Level 2, the wearing of face coverings in schools is highly recommended. However, this is not mandated for use when in schools. It remains an option for individuals and a decision for the individuals and whānau. Where an individual chooses to use a face-covering they should supply and wear their own, and to do so safely. And finally, If your child is unwell could you please email attendance@rongotai.school.nz or log the absence via the Skool Loop app. In addition to the reason for the absence please indicate the date your child will be returning to school or email the school on a daily basis until their return. A text will be sent to the parent/caregiver each day students are absent without notification.

    • Changes to NCEA 2021

The dates for end-of-year NCEA and NZ Scholarship exams will be delayed by two weeks, to run from Monday 22 November until Tuesday 14 December (see updated amended timetable 2021). Dates for portfolio submissions will also be pushed back by 2 weeks. These changes will give students and teachers more time to prepare for the end of the year assessments. The Level 1 MCAT (Mathematics Common Assessment Task) will also be pushed out by two weeks. As a consequence, we will be changing the dates of our school exams to Term 4 Week 1 (18 – 22 October)

    • COVID-19 – Update 23 August
      • Rongotai College is now physically closed to students as we are in Level 4 of Covid-19 lockdown.  We will not physically be open until further notice. We are now operating our Learning@Home on-line programme until further notice. Students will be able to access our Learning@Home on-line programme. To support your son’s learning, you can access his timetable on the parent portal (https://portal.rongotai.school.nz/). Work for students with appropriate resources and links will be posted on-line or sent via email by each of your son’s teachers. The most common platforms will be either Google Drive or GOOGLE Classroom, while some teachers will also organise ZOOM meetings. Some background information on GOOGLE Classroom can be found at https://classroom.google.com/. Teachers will be communicating with students using email (your son has a @my.rongotai.school.nz email address), and interacting through zoom and/or GOOGLE Meet. Teachers will be setting routines for teaching and learning in their digital classrooms.  Our team of teachers did some great work last lockdown in this new on-line school environment, and it showed that systems worked well; feedback from staff indicated most boys engaged with the learning provided by staff. Whilst we are unsure at this stage how long this situation will continue, our teachers are committed to providing learning opportunities for your son until things are resolved. All updates will be posted on the Rongotai website and on our Facebook page, and communicated directly to caregivers and students via email Rest assured, we remain focused on the learning and well-being of our students, and will continue to do so over the coming weeks.

    • Sports Update – Week Ending 9 April 2021
      • The business end of the season shifts our focus from performance to results and Rongotai is again amongst the GOLD. Floorball During Summer Sports week our teams took on the best from the country and demolished Wellington College 3-0 in the Nationals Final with 3 outstanding goals from Hagan McFadyen, Alec Stewart and Jack Cobden-Cox. The extra shine on the cup was Alec Stewart taking out the top goal scorer award too. Cricket The 2nd XI cricket team took out the Premier 4 championship after beating Paraparaumu College by 7 wickets in the final. Bowling first we rolled them for 136 with Taipana Hiroti-Teaia and Keenan Ranchhod picking up 3 wickets each and then Louis Paterson scoring 50 not out to hit the winning runs – well done lads! Winter Sport Trials We are wrapping up trials for our winter codes this weekend, with several trial games being played over the weekend. Competitive teams will be posted next week and social teams will be sorted once the competitive teams are finalised. Registrations All students should have registered for sport using the SPORTY online system to be eligible to play sport at Rongotai.  Students cannot wait until the teams have been created and then just turn up and train and play. There is no way around this system. Mr Lala (Director of Sport) will reopen the registrations until Monday (12 April) morning to allow for those to correct the situation. In sport there is a saying ‘What you do when nobody is watching is what separates a champion from everybody else’ Do the mahi over the next 3 weeks to ensure you are ready to perform in Term 2.

    • McEvedy Shield Cancelled
      • The Rectors and Principals from St Patrick’s – Silverstream, St Patrick’s – Wellington, Rongotai College, and Wellington College have made the difficult decision today that this year’s McEvedy Shield Athletics Championships will be cancelled.   The 2021 McEvedy was originally scheduled for Tuesday 2 March, but could not take place due to COVID-19 Alert Level 2 restrictions limiting mass gatherings to no more than 100 people.  The fluid COVID-19 situation makes it extremely difficult to effectively plan for an event of this nature and it has proved too difficult to find an appropriate day on all four of our school calendars on which Newtown Park is available.   This is only the second time that the McEvedy Shield has been cancelled. The 1948 event was unable to proceed due to the Polio epidemic. We share the disappointment of the athletes, alongside their coaches and supporters, who have worked so hard to prepare for the 2021 event.   The four schools have committed to immediately start planning for the 2022 event, which will mark the 100th anniversary of the first McEvedy Shield. We are determined, in the post-COVID-19 environment, to provide an appropriate and inclusive celebration of athletics that honours Dr Pat McEvedy’s love for sport and true sportsmanship which led to him donating the shield, which bears his name and includes the motivational words extolling “the joy of effort”.   Grahame Duffy – Rector, St Patrick’s College Silverstream Mike Savali – Rector, St Patrick’s College (Wellington) Kevin Carter – Principal, Rongotai College Gregor Fountain – Principal, Wellington College.

    • Social Action Day 2021
      • Social Action Day was held on Friday 4 December. This is when Year 9 students work with groups in the community to help others and improve our local environment.  A good variety of activities were available for the boys to choose to participate in.
