6hr tow of yacht from Wellington south coast

- Operation Details Date/Time: Thu, 05/01/2023 - 09:30 - 21:30 Operation Type: CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted: 2 Total Volunteer Hours: 84 38ft steel yacht got it's anchor stuck near Makara/Ohau. Whilst manoeuvring to release it they overheated the engine. They were unable to sail due to low wind and inexperience, so ended up drifting south in the strong currents. By the time we got to them they had drifted 10NM into Cook Strait, south of Karori Rock through the Karori Rip. It took us 5hrs to tow them back to Mana, by which point the tide was at it's lowest point. We had to put them on the mooring just outside the bar and then return the passenger back to base, leaving the skipper aboard. Broken down runabout adrift offshore

- Operation Details Date/Time: Tue, 08/06/2021 - 18:30 - 22:30 Operation Type: SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted: 3 Total Volunteer Hours: 40 Multiple reports of a vessel with 3 or 4 POB broken down (via victim to Police on 111) or overdue (family to CG Ops Centre and friends to CG Mana public phone). Location (estimate) varied between 6NM of coastline between Makara and Little Titahi Bay. Limited comms from victim via 1 cellphone that was down to 20% battery. Information very confused and unreliable. Started with coastline search and trying to identify potential lights. Received TXT indicating we had gone past them and they had drifted further out near Mana Island. Spotted a orange flickering light about 3NM in the distance. Vessel was located by police launch Lady Liz IV half kilometer off Makara. Police stayed with the vessel until Trust Porirua Rescue arrived on scene to take the boat under tow. Boat was towed back to Mana Marina by coastguard. Missing diver near Makara Beach

- Operation Details Date/Time: Mon, 13/02/2012 - 14:40 - 15:30 Operation Type: SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted: 0 Total Volunteer Hours: 7 I diver was reported as missing south of Mana Island near Makara Beach. Coastguard Mana activated a callout but were stood down at 15:30, just as we were about to depart Mana Marina, as the diver had been located safe and well. A vessel had dropped off the diver at 12:30 and then went to a different location, due to return and pick them up at 13:20. When the vessel returned they couldn't locate the diver and started a search, calling Police by phone. Boat broken down near Ohau Point

- Operation Details Date/Time: Sat, 04/02/2012 - 18:00 - 23:00 Operation Type: SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted: 3 Total Volunteer Hours: 15 Coastguard Mana was tasked by Police to recover a broken down vessel with three people on board from Ohau Point, south of Makara Beach. When CRV Trust Porirua Rescue arrived on scene it was discovered that two of the people had already been returned by another vessel to Makara Beach. The remaining person was towed back to Mana. The vessel was a 17ft runabout that had experienced mechanical failure. Missing swimmer at Titahi Bay- Day 2

- Operation Details Date/Time: Sun, 15/01/2012 - 08:00 - 13:30 Operation Type: SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted: 1 Total Volunteer Hours: 82 The search for the missing swimmer at Titahi Bay resumed at 0800 on Sunday morning. A large search was performed by Coastguard Mana's vessels Trust Porirua Rescue and CRV Pelorus. Shoreline searches were performed around the whole of Mana Island and all the way down the West coast as far as Makara Beach, while Titahi Bay Surf Lifesaving Club covered the shoreline and immediate area around Titahi Bay. Sea conditions were very rough with 1-2m waves and up to 30 knots of NW wind (slightly less than the previous day).
