Whilst manoeuvring to release it they overheated the engine. They were unable to sail due to low wind and inexperience, so ended up drifting south in the strong currents. By the time we got to them they had drifted 10NM into Cook Strait, south of Karori Rock through the Karori Rip. It took us 5hrs to tow them back to Mana, by which point the tide was at it's lowest point. We had to put them on the mooring just outside the bar and then return the passenger back to base, leaving the skipper aboard. Information very confused and unreliable. Started with coastline search and trying to identify potential lights. Received TXT indicating we had gone past them and they had drifted further out near Mana Island. Spotted a orange flickering light about 3NM in the distance. When the vessel returned they couldn't locate the diver and started a search, calling Police by phone. The vessel was a 17ft runabout that had experienced mechanical failure. A large search was performed by Coastguard Mana's vessels Trust Porirua Rescue and CRV Pelorus. Shoreline searches were performed around the whole of Mana Island and all the way down the West coast as far as Makara Beach, while Titahi Bay Surf Lifesaving Club covered the shoreline and immediate area around Titahi Bay. Sea conditions were very rough with 1-2m waves and up to 30 knots of NW wind (slightly less than the previous day).
