    • CubaDupa presents GO HOME STAY HOME
      • CubaDupa Presents Go Home Stay Home, a Live-Streamed Musical Happening Wellington festival set to unite the community through virtual music festival   Following the cancellation of CubaDupa, the festival team have been working on a remedy—a virtual way to celebrate the creativity and community that would have taken over Cuba Street on the 28th and 29th March, with over 1500 artists and 450 performances throughout Wellington’s favourite precinct. And so, Go Home Stay Home – a live-streamed virtual festival has been arranged to keep you smiling through week four of lockdown with a selection of the CubaDupa 2020 artists. Festival Director Gerry Paul says “This is a way of keeping the CubaDupa fire burning until we next hit the streets. And it’s a time when the creativity and talent of our artists are playing such an important part in keeping us sane and inspired – so tune in and come together in solidarity – he waka eke noa!” The programme for Go Home Stay Home may be on a micro scale compared to the monumental street festival, but you can expect it to be bursting with the same energy and vibrancy CubaDupa is known for.    On Saturday 18 April from 5 pm, settle in for an evening of sweet tunes from fresh local artists alongside well-loved homegrown acts, streaming live on the CubaDupa Facebook page. Auckland alt-pop-rock band Ha the Unclear will join us from the comfort of their bubble, along with Miss June who will treat the audience to a solo set—a rare occurrence for the noisy, energetic punk rock four-piece. After a two year stint in London, Wellington rapper Name UL is back, along with the always engaging Same Name Confusion, synth-maestro Dayle Jellyman, dream pop songwriter Nikita 雅涵 Tu-Bryant and rising alt-pop artist RIIKI. Usually a band of seven musicians, Dr Reknaw will present a special stripped back solo set, and Maori world-roots performer Māmā Mihirangi will also perform solo. The Ping Pong Party People will wrap up the night with a 90s trance party that’ll scratch your dancing itch. A special thanks goes to WellingtonNZ and the Wellington City Council for their support on this initiative and making Go Home Stay Home possible. CubaDupa is encouraging viewers to donate to MusicHelps, the New Zealand charity that provides vital support to members of the New Zealand music community in times of illness, distress and hardship. There will be a donate button on the Go Home Stay Home live stream for viewers to contribute to MusicHelps. CubaDupa Presents Go Home Stay Home will be free to watch on the CubaDupa Facebook page from 5:00 pm NZST Saturday 18 April. Here is the schedule: Ha the Unclear 5:00 PM 5:20 PM Māmā Mihirangi 5:30 PM 5:50 PM Dayle Jellyman 6:00 PM 6:20 PM Same Name Confusion 6:30 PM 6:50 PM Name UL 7:00 PM 7:20 PM KITA 7:30 PM 7:50 PM Dr Reknaw 8:00 PM 8:20 PM Miss June 8:30 PM 8:50 PM RIIKI 9:00 PM 9:20 PM Ping Pong Party People 9:30 PM 9:45 PM For quick access to our artist pages, click the following link. https://linktr.ee/cubadupa To head straight to the CubaDupa facebook page for live streaming, click the following link. • Fat Freddy's Drop
      • So, Simon Sweetman's live review of Fat Freddy's Drop (he really, really didn't like them) seems to have touched a nerve amongst some in the Wellington music scene. A few (actually, quite a lot) have come out in support of Sweetman - says Josef... the perfect music for the iPod generation who wouldn't know good music if it bit them in the ass. And Hugh... Thank goodness someone has seen the elepha

    • Department of Linky Love: The Examiner
      • It’s nice to see some solid local news reporting over at new Wellington website The Examiner. The Examiner says it aims to be “… a site where we look deeper and think harder about the city we live in and the issues that matter to us. It is also a forum for telling Wellingtonians’ stories, especially for people who would not otherwise have a voice.” Neat. Welcome, The Examiner.

    • The Old Shebang of Cuba Street
      • The National Library has joined the Flickr Commons project, whacking up many of their photos on Flickr. At the moment, there's not much from Wellington, but we're hoping that will change as more are uploaded. One particular Wellington delight, however, is a set of photos of a ramshackle house on Cuba Street called the Old Shebang (shebang in this instance means dwelling). And as well as that, Goo

All events will be held in Rutherford House in the Pipitea campus - starting at 4.00pm with Adrian Leaman, continuing at 5.30 with McBride Charles Ryan, and then finishing up at 6.30 pm with Japanese superstar architect cardboad guru Shigeru Ban.

    • The Mighty Booth
      • After every election there are geographical analyses of voting patterns, inevitably followed by suggestions that certain regions should secede and form their own country. Such analyses are often at electorate level, but there's a lot of fine detail below that, and a cell of socialist insurgents might live just around the corner from an enclave of conservative curmudgeons. So I made the following map of Wellington voting tendencies at a booth-by-booth level.

    • Win-Win
      • Win-win Mary* is 85, little, friendly and active. When I joined Age Concern Wellington Region’s Companion Walking Service, I looked forward to walking weekly with her. We live in the same suburb. But after a couple of walks near her rest home and dozens of repetitions of how she was born, schooled and lived all her life in the area, I thought ‘I’m not sure I can do this.’ Shame... Source

    • Review: Lipstick
      • How do I even begin to describe this band? I’ve been dying to write about Lipstick since I saw them for the first time at Valhalla in April. Without a doubt, Lipstick has become my favorite band to see live, and I’ve been hooked since that very first show. Since their debut as a band at the end of March, they’ve become a prominent presence in the gig scene—and for good reason.

    • Fearless feline freed by the SPCA
      • An inquisitive tabby cat is recovering well at home following an ordeal that left him trapped between the walls of his new home – a home he had been in for all of one day! Wellington SPCA Inspector Brett Lahman was called in to help rescue the fearless feline after he had clambered up inside a sealed chimney and then fell into a tiny crevasse between the walls of the house and the fireplace.

    • Rethinking the airport barrier
      • Despite being surrounded by high hills, Wellington is fortunate to have an international airport that is under 10km from its CBD, with flight approaches over Cook Strait to the south and just missing the Newland hills to the north. The drawback is the runway which forms a major physical barrier over 2km long between the city and the airport terminal and the growing population of over 20,000 residents who live east of the airport on Miramar Peninsula.

    • Counting Down The Days
      • The impending sale of Crossways is entering its final days, with tenders due to close on 6 August. Moves are afoot with the Crossways Community Trust to finalise details of the tender the community intends putting in for the building. According to Bill Southworth, Chair of the Trust, “We are close to arriving at what we think is a fair price for Crossways, and we intend making a strong bid to retain ownership of our community house.”
