Farewelling the museum
- Cricket Wellington
- When the New Zealand Cricket Museum closed its doors in early 2019 for earthquake strengthening, the Museum and its collection faced an uncertain future. Fast forward two years and the Museum has been brought back to life, transformed from the original Museum that stood since 1987 into a modern, visually compelling space filled with stories and memoirs from some of New Zealand cricket’s most memorable moments. Behind the transformation is the museum’s curator, Owen Mann, who will move on from his role this month after two years of tireless effort to bring the tales of our great game back home.

Decision 6 - Funding the Central Library rebuild | Kōrero mai | Wellington City Council
- Wellington City Council
- Wellington’s much-loved Central Library was closed in March 2019 following an engineering assessment saying that the way the floor was designed presented a high level of potential failure in a significant earthquake. It has a similar floor design to one used in the now demolished Statistics House, where a floor collapsed in the Kaikoura earthquakes. In 2020, we ran a six-week consultation in which we asked for public feedback on five options for restoring a Central Library service in Te Ngākau Civic Square. The options all considered the resilience of the building, future proofing the library service, the connection to Te Ngākau, and the overall costs.

100 UP FOR ASHA STROM
- Wellington United AFC
- Wellington United's latest centurion, Asha Strom, is something of an unsung hero. Playing in a defensive midfield role she doesn't get in the spotlight like those that score the goals, she just gets on with her job, a job she does so well and has set a very high standard in she really has to have an exceptional game to get noticed. 2018 Dutch import Suzanne Giesen, commented on her time at the club "it was fantastic playing with Asha, as she did all the hard work which allowed me to push forward and attack more" Playing in the role she does, Asha doesn't get many chances to score goals, and while she has scored just four in her 100 games they have all been memorable shots from about 25-30 meters. Goals that her teammates have dubbed "Asha specials"

Mentoring announced for three Urban Dream Brokerage projects
- Urban Dream Brokerage
- <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > 'We Spoke', Candace Smith, Performance Arcade, Wellington, March 2018 Letting Space's Urban Dream Brokerage service is thrilled to announce three artists and projects in Wellington that have been given mentors in a new peer-to-peer mentorship programme for artists working in new spaces in the city. Candace Smith will be mentored by artist Vivien Atkinson, who works across a variety of media and is known for her work with The See Here and Occupation Artists (website here). Candace's series of public works has commenced with installation 'We Spoke' at Performance Arcade, in which the public generated energy with a bicycle, operating fans within a transparent space, sealed from the wind, which gently moved mobiles made from umbrella parts (themselves deconstructed by the wind). A performer joined the work in response to the cyclists at night. Candace is interested in creating installations of reassembled objects which explore ideas around the fragmentation and reconnection associated with migration. Rosie White and the project Playdate will be mentored by Jo Randerson, artist and co-producer of Barbarian Productions (website here). White has recently completed a Masters of Fine Arts at Massey's College of Creative Arts and will work with collaborators' on a project that is a work of craftivism or art activism, concerned with a social issue: slavery, with specific concern to the significant numbers of people in the world today trafficked for sex. New Zealand says Rosie is not exempt and the project will seek to highlight the issue. Visual artist Mark Antony Smith and his project The Lost Future Exchange will be mentored by theatremaker Leo Gene Peters of company A Slightly Isolated Dog. This is a project Mark Antony is starting in 2018 to gather stories, dreams and remembrances of place in the central area of Wellington. It is an evolution of Ghosting About a project he did for his Masters study at Massey which included work 'Imperial Ghosts' concerning Dixon Street's Imperial Building for Lux Festival. Mark Antony Smith's previous shows also include Black Dog: Failure at Toi Poneke Gallery 2015. We hope to announce a fourth mentored project shortly. Initial information on the kaupapa behind this mentoring scheme can be found here.

Achievements Say ‘Yes ‘to YES! Last Saturday three WHS Young Enterprise Groups ran stalls at the YES @ The Wellington Underground Market. Congratulations to Remixxed Bags (Sienna Williamson and Sierra Williamson), Toucher Soap (Poppy Vine and Leanne Fandialan) and Poneke Ahi (Jacob Baddeley and Eliseo Biondini). Follow them on Instagram remixxedbags, PonekeAhi and ToucherSoap. Poetry success Congratulations to Seb MacCaulay (Year 12), for being shortlisted as a finalist in the National Secondary Schools Poetry Competition. He received prizes from the New Zealand Book Council and Sport, as well as $100 and the opportunity to attend a masterclass at the International Institute of Modern Letters at Victoria University last weekend. Seb’s poem is included below: Old man I’m sitting and I watch the old man from the street rest and unfurl from his linen a pack of Dunhills. He twists off the cellophane and eyes his catch with that vintage gleam of noon-stripped old lowlifes, naked, howling at their cigarette moons. Cars and their drivers blur on by, each turning their heads as if to say yes man, light that cigarette for all you’re worth. Yes, man lights it. Draws each drag out long like a bones player shifting keys. He exhales each time only a whisper of thin smoke-suns that twist, convulse mid-air. I have a moment when I think of my father and I driving along an afternoon’s length of country road; we could’ve been both fifteen naive and I feel as if right here and now I’ll weep watching this old new nomad smoke, pulling our car breakneck along the asphalt, filling the valleys and valleys and valleys, hauling us through them, here to someplace to every place, maybe, most likely, somewhere unideal, where infants are born dead but still live. My father and I, our cities become flame, the skyscrapers strip the blue skies, haul from the seas an urgent thunderstorm now upon us all and still. The old man smokes. Almost at the filter now. Watching our cars roll on by. Looking with those eyes at each and every person as if to say yes man, go on your way, go on your way. IYNT Winners, Minsk, 2019 WHS students Ryan Bright and Lydia Acton were part of the winning NZ team at the 2019 International Young Naturalists’ Tournament. Lydia was the team captain, having also competed in the 2018 tournament in Tbilisi, Georgia. Ryan reported his solution to problem 7, “Burning Glass” in the final against Croatia and Switzerland. He scored the highest score in the final, which was won by NZ with 47.9 points, to Croatia’s 45.9 and Switzerland’s 45.6. The team’s achievements have been widely recognised, including this tweet from the National Science advisor! Sports Underwater Hockey HUGE congratulations go out to all our Underwater Hockey teams for their fantastic season this year. Our Junior Open A team won bronze medals in Friday night’s CSW Premier finals, defeating Hutt Valley High School 6-2 in their playoff game. The boys were hoping for better after entering the playoffs in second place, however they suffered a shock 3-0 loss to Scots College in their semi final. The bronze medal is still a massive achievement, and the first medal won by a WHS team for as long as Murray Chisholm can remember. This team and our Senior Girls team will contest the national championships in Wellington at WRAC from September 6th-8th. If you are interested in Underwater Hockey or intrigued by this mysterious sport, please watch the video made by Year 9 student Sky Gobbi here: https://youtu.be/978v3IPhqV8 1st XI Boys Hockey vs Tararua College Last Sunday our 1st XI Boys Hockey team played Tararua College. Tararua are doing a Lower North Island tour, mainly playing schools in the Wellington region. WHS may have lost the game 3 – 0 but it was an evenly matched contest and our team benefited from the opportunity to take on Tararua College.

Billy Graham Youth Foundation
- In 2006 Billy and Kerri Graham established the Naenae Boxing Academy (NBA) with a vision of giving back to the community that Billy had grown up in during the 50s. In 2018 The Billy Graham Youth Foundation (BGYF) was established in response to numerous requests from communities and stakeholders throughout New Zealand. These calls came from groups who wanted to see own their communities benefit in the same way that Naenae had through the establishment of the local Academy.
