    • Hussey Dropped
      • Zephyr Rovers Acting Manager George Nash sensationally dropped Eddie Hussey (pictured) as finals penalty taker today and installed himself in the event that the final was tied. "I thought Eddie's penalty in the knock out rounds last season was a shocker" said Nash "and I think a calm, cool and collected player like myself should be easily able to toe poke one in from hat range".

      • Thursday 24 & Friday 25 June 2010: What is Social Justice? This was the focus question for Year 10 students as part of this year's Retreat. In a programme developed by Challenge 2000, students took part in a range of activities that challenged their perceptions of poverty and justice. Discussions involved such questions as "Does poverty exist in Lower Hutt?". A thought-provoking day for all.

    • Fem-Cat Friday introduces Becky
      • Little 12 year old Becky came into the shelter as "Bungeye", having lost her right eye in a car accident when she was young. Becky3.jpg Our volunteers hated the name and felt that it focused on her physical issues rather than the lovely cat that she is. Normally we don't rename our cats, but so many people felt that her name just didn't do her justice that we've made an exception in this case.

During one performance the tub of water was accidentality overturned by an overzealous stage hand. Jenny was not the only one who wore the bath water that night. Director Bob Cater was not amused. It was noted in the Kapi Mana News that "As part of the society's policy of making theatre available to as wide an audience as possible, the admission price is only 45 cents."

      • Last week news of a proposed hotel development on the site of the Skyline Restaurant at the top of the cable car appeared on the front page of the Dominion Post. The article had salacious details of ‘clandestine dealings’, ‘contractual agreements’, the public and media banned from meetings behind closed doors at WCC and a proposal to revoke the reserve status of an area of the Botanic Gardens to allow for a hotel on the site.

    • No more please
      • With the new $180m convention opening soon, it was startling to see that a city councillor says the city needs to have another new venue. Councillor Tamatha Paul (quoted at the end of a DomPost report about the loss of car parks) said she supported opening a medium-sized venue. “That’s going to fill the city, the hotels, the restaurants and the hearts of our city.” Which is of course the claim that was made to justify spending $180m on the convention centre.

      • wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I arrived at the police station. The others were waiting. I got into the waiting patrol car, and buckled up. I was going out on community patrol in Naenae. Community patrols work alongside police to build safer communities, providing an extra set of eyes and ears. We drove a random route but to some set areas, through schools, up alleyways behind businesses, making sure the streets were safe and providing a visual deterrent for tagging and other crime.

    • Manners Mall submission
      • The Architectural Centre has made the following submission : Manners Mall Carpark on the WCC’s proposal’s for the redevelopment of Manner’s Mall. As you may note from the written and drawn information, we were very much less than impressed. We are calling for the WCC to scrap the current scheme owing to its predominate use of car parking, and to re-design the spaces for the use of people, not cars. Wellington deserves better than this from our Council, especially at such an important, central city site.

      • On the evening of 28th May 1917, a tramcar motorman was driving his tram towards Lambton Station when a man stepped off the footpath in front of him. He sounded the gong and the man seemed to stop and stagger. He then applied the emergency brake but the man was struck by the advertisement side of the car and knocked down. The injured man was carried to the Central Hotel with the assistance of a solider. He never regained consciousness on being admitted to hospital and died at 8am the following morning.
