    • Roberts Injured by centipede
      • Pete Roberts was injured today in an outdoor match and will be out for weeks. "Apparently Pete was doing one of his step overs and tripped over a centipede" said Zephyr Rovers Manager Steve Hall "reports directly from his team mates said he squealed like a pig for several minutes until the referee finally noticed him and got him to go and scream back in the changing rooms".

    • Comings and Goings
      • The start of each year often sees a shake-up of the bar and restaurant scene, and with the Current Economic ClimateTM one might expect a few more closures than usual. Let's not dwell on such morbid speculation, and look at a few closings and openings that we do know about. While discussing the demise of Temperance (which didn't reopen this weekend, despite DB's threats assurances), Blair mentioned

    • The Old Shebang of Cuba Street
      • The National Library has joined the Flickr Commons project, whacking up many of their photos on Flickr. At the moment, there's not much from Wellington, but we're hoping that will change as more are uploaded. One particular Wellington delight, however, is a set of photos of a ramshackle house on Cuba Street called the Old Shebang (shebang in this instance means dwelling). And as well as that, Goo

    • Wellington goes High Tech
      • In an act of architectural brilliance, the Duel on Vivian block of flats opposite the School of Architecture appears to be not only a green building (avocado green, or mushy pea green) with prefabricated external cladding (that I’m sure they will get around to finishing the corners on one day), but also appears to have gone all Richard-Rogers-style High-Tech on us, with the south facade feat

      • Field-work is one of the best aspects of working as a Natural Environment curator at Te Papa.  I get to spend about three weeks a year in the field collecting plant specimens. Te Papa’s 4WD. If seen outside Wellington, there is a good chance this vehicle is being used to collect plants, whales, or fossils. I’ve recently returned from ten days field-work in the South Island, collecting samples for

      • For a brief moment in time it seemed as though time had stood still, and that El Terry had given up finishing it, but then it was restarted with new contractors who actually seemed keen to complete the project. It’s one of the more complex developments Wellington has seen for a number of years: taking a barren empty site and layering on it a monster carpark for initial income generating pote

    • A sporting site
      • Submissions on the Draft Waterfront Development Plan close on Friday, and while my opinion on most of it is just "get on with it", there's one area where I'll be promoting a specific change. While the ground floors of Sites 8, 9 and 10 have been designated simply as "retail", I think that Site 10 should be explicitly set aside as an indoor sports facility to replace Sheds 1 and 6.

    • Mt Cook summit
      • Mt Cook has been facing a few changes recently, and the locals have been vocal in their response. The next step is a well-publicised public meeting tomorrow night, and it will be interesting to see what comes out of that.Quite apart from specific issues of supermarkets, swimming pools and traffic, I get the feeling that Mt Cook has long faced a more fundamental question: one of identity.

    • Champions Again
      • Zephyr Rovers acting Manager George Nash (pictured) said he was ecstatic that Rovers beat Ten Left Feet in the final of the Division 1 plate. "I think it show this is a club going places and we've now one the trophy that confirms us as the fifth best team in the league" said Nash "only four more teams to knock off and we'll be king of the pile".

    • Sleep Deprived Cao KO's New Boots
      • Zephyr Rovers found themsleves in a tough first half battle this morning at the Shed of Dreams and had battled to a 2 - 2 deadlock when the referee called one minute to go until half time. "This is where we saw the benefits of sleep deprivation as John Cao (pictured) scored two great goals in the last minute to put us ahead at the break by 4 - 2"

    • The Waiting For God Commission
      • Let's have a little competition - the NZ Retirement Commissioner, Diana Crossan, says she's wanted a change of name for the Commission for several years, but no-one has coined a suitable name. Waiting for God, and The Golden Years were suggested at Select Committee, but rejected (Un. Be. Lievable.) We'll think of a prize as we go along, maybe a bag of Kapiti Macadamia nuts, I'm sure we can l

    • Wednesday 16th September - Architecture Day
      • We haven’t got a whole week of events for you this year, but we do have 3 events all on one day, so we reckon that’ll do just as well. All events will be held in Rutherford House in the Pipitea campus - starting at 4.00pm with Adrian Leaman, continuing at 5.30 with McBride Charles Ryan, and then finishing up at 6.30 pm with Japanese superstar architect cardboad guru Shigeru Ban.

    • Island Bay's Creative Talent - Two More Stunning Examples
      • Jordan is a typical multi-facetted, multi-tasking Gemini from Canada. Immaculately qualified, with degrees from Queen’s University at Kingston and Windsor University, Ontario and a PhD from the University of Auckland, she has held a number of high level public service research and management posts in the transport and housing sectors here in Wellington. She is also one of Island Bay’s irrepressible entrepreneurs, embracing innovation and constant personal reinvention.

    • Things to come on the harbour’s edge
      • Amongst all the details of new roads and ramps and car parks, there’s some enthusiasm about cycling and walking in the Regional Council’s new ten-year plan for transport from Ngauranga to Te Marua. In particular, there’s a strong recommendation for a good quality cycling and walking route between Ngauranga and Petone. Regional Council chair Fran Wilde says it is one of the major projects in the plan.

    • Lower membership fees for YWCA Greater Wellington
      • This year, the YWCA of Greater Wellington is celebrating International Year of Youth and making their organisation more accessible for young women to join. YWCA of Greater Wellington’s Executive Director Makere Derbyshire says, “The YWCA here in Wellington is maybe one of the only organisations that has reduced its membership fee in this day and age, making it more accessible for women to be a part of the YWCA movement locally.”

    • There’s a new kid on the block…
      • Opening officially today is “Bicycle Junction”; the latest addition to Wellington’s cycling scene. Brooke from Mamachari and Dan from Crank Cargo have joined forces to open a new urban cycling store in Newtown. They sell a range of bikes – refurbished imports through to Christiania trikes – plus all the accessories one could dream off… including my favourite, cup holders! And once permits have been approved they’ll also be serving coffee… can’t wait!
