The birth of the film festival
- Wellington Scoop
- The Wellington Film Festival, which launched its 50th anniversary season at the Embassy Theatre last night, was born out of the film society movement. In the same year that I was elected president of the Wellington Film Society, I was appointed programmer for New Zealand’s 50 film societies. It was 1970 and I was a television journalist with a yen to be entrepreneurial and plenty of rostered time-off. For the film societies, I had to organise an annual season of films, all to be screened from 16mm prints. There were many critically-acclaimed new titles which were being released in cinemas in London and New York but weren’t being seen in New Zealand because local cinema owners wouldn’t show them.

Making up for a million dollar loss
- Wellington Scoop
- The Wellington City Council, after ten years, has decided to resume earning an income from the two billboards on top of the Embassy Theatre. When the city council took over ownership of the 1920s building from the Embassy Theatre Trust more than ten years ago, advertising deals were in place which earned $100,000 a year from the high-profile signage. But the council decided it didn’t want advertising. Except for itself. The commercial deals ended. As did the income.

My forty film festival awards
- Wellington Scoop
- I’ve been going to the Wellington Film Festival for every one of its 42 years, even before it was rebranded as the NZ International Film Festival. So I’m claiming the right to offer my own personal festival awards.

In 1970 when I was elected president of the Wellington Film Society, I was also programmer for New Zealand’s 50 film societies. (I was a television journalist with plenty of spare time for extra activities.) For the film societies, I had to organise an annual season of films, all to be screened from 16mm prints. But many new titles were available only on 35mm prints, and in those days film societies didn’t have access to 35mm projection.

Age? Who’s counting?
- Wellington Scoop
- The Paramount Theatre was built in 1917, and 93 years later it’s still showing movies. Currently its main attraction is the 12th annual World Cinema Showcase, an annual programme of new international movies which includes a mesmerizing new feature by a great French director who’s almost as old as the cinema.
