WCC voted on Dec 5 to demolish the City to Sea Bridge
- Architectural Centre Inc
- Supporting the Wellington Civic Trust, the Architectural Centre will be opposing this decision through whatever means we can. We believe the Council’s advice to Councillors was not provided with reasonable consideration of the range of development options, particularly considering physical and cultural amenity value of the bridge. The demolition of the Bridge will return the […]

Mitigation
- Architectural Centre Inc
- In the case of the Basin Reserve flyover, the Wellington City Council has asked for further “mitigation” of the proposed Flyover (concrete bridge / Option A). For its part, NZTA has also promised some “mitigation” of the effects of the flyover, and says that they will focus on “mitigation” to ensure that the flyover is “integrated”. Trouble is, I’m not really sure that they are talking about the same thing.

City Barriers
- Architectural Centre Inc
- Timber posts with nautical rope strung between them are being proposed for segments of the Manners Mall in Wellington, in an effort to stop people crossing the road ‘illegally’. The proposal is by a WCC Councilor, Leonie Gill, who appears shocked and horrified that Wellingtonians have such a care-free attitude to crossing the road.

Wgtn 2040
- Architectural Centre Inc
- The Wellington City Council has at last started the process of telling you about WGTN 2040, the proposed Vision for the future – 29 years in the future to be exact. It has been a long time coming – a couple of years at least, but this is one of the most important consultations that the Council has ever asked the Wellington public for their opinion on. We would encourage all Wellingtonians to have some input on this – and we would also like to hear your views, so that we can also table a submission from the Architectural Centre.

skyline reservations
- Architectural Centre Inc
- Last week news of a proposed hotel development on the site of the Skyline Restaurant at the top of the cable car appeared on the front page of the Dominion Post. The article had salacious details of ‘clandestine dealings’, ‘contractual agreements’, the public and media banned from meetings behind closed doors at WCC and a proposal to revoke the reserve status of an area of the Botanic Gardens to allow for a hotel on the site.

Deep water
- Architectural Centre Inc
- The WCC Draft Annual Plan 2011/12 was out for public consultation recently. In these tight financial times the plan was generally about maintaining affordable rates through prioritising spending and reducing costs by $6 million, through reducing some services, improving the efficiency of other services and deferring non-urgent work. Although it’s not all cost cutting, there is an allowance to spend $650,000 on a feasibility study for a new deep-water pool in Kilbirnie.

On your books
- Architectural Centre Inc
- In the mean time - here’s a round up on projects completing, underway, or even just starting off, as there a couple of new cranes that have appeared over Christmas. The big push around Wellington at the moment is of course the Housing Upgrade Project. A number of well-respected practices around town have got a project or two in there - with a total of about 20 WCC housing projects to upgrade, we’re guessing there is some work in there to last for a few years

Another restructure - Should we care?
- Architectural Centre Inc
- It’s inevitable, given their political nature, that governments (local and central) are subject to “restructuring” more than most institutions. Anyone involved in architecture and urban design in Wellington will have known, for a little while now, that the urban design bits of our city council have been, and are in the middle of, such [...]
