Architects Draw: history
- Architectural Centre Inc
- Hugh Ferriss “Metropolis of Tomorrow” (c.1929) Drawing has been a staple of an architect’s profession for longer than architecture has been a profession … … and given we are about to have another exhibition of architects’ (and others’) drawings with the upcoming Charity Auction to raise funds for our involvement in the Basin flyover High […]

Architects Draw: Charity Auction
- Architectural Centre Inc
- Architects are renowned for drawing, so the idea of a charity auction of architects’ drawings as a fundraiser for our participation in the High Court Appeal over the Basin Bridge Board of Inquiry Decision is a natural one. But we’re aiming for it to be a bit bigger than drawings and architects, with an auction […]

Bucharest flyover impacts on town
- Architectural Centre Inc
- *Guest Post by Bill Toomath, one of our well-respected architect members of the Architectural Centre To gain a virtually realistic experience of what it would feel like to be alongside and under the proposed NZTA flyover at the Basin Reserve one can easily beam down on Google to a similar project at Bucharest in Romania. Undercroft
- Architectural Centre Inc
- Debates about the Flyover proposed for Wellington still ringing in our ears (the Basin Bridge Board of Enquiry is ongoing as we speak), it seemed like an appropriate time to examine what the underside of a Flyover actually looks like. The answer seems to be: often Not Very Pretty. This one is typical. People living [...]

The Public Love Tunnels
- Architectural Centre Inc
- If there is one thing that the public love, it is being let in to a secret underground space, to go boldly where no one has gone before… And last weekend, Wellington was allowed to venture into the giant slice through the earth that the NZTA call the Memorial Park underpass. At present it is [...]

Mitigation
- Architectural Centre Inc
- In the case of the Basin Reserve flyover, the Wellington City Council has asked for further “mitigation” of the proposed Flyover (concrete bridge / Option A). For its part, NZTA has also promised some “mitigation” of the effects of the flyover, and says that they will focus on “mitigation” to ensure that the flyover is “integrated”. Trouble is, I’m not really sure that they are talking about the same thing.

Memorial Park
- Architectural Centre Inc
- The Prime Minister has announced today that the Memorial Park is to be a Park, and not a motorway. Hooray for common sense, good taste, sensible planning, appropriate responses, and joined up thinking. There has evidently been a fair bit of quiet contemplative thought going on with this proposal, and what seems to have been happening is some good cross-party agreements, that what is best for New Zealand is to have a Memorial Park worthy of its name. No one liked the proposal of a motorway through the park, which is what a five lane highway at ground level would have been – and so good sense has prevailed.

City Barriers
- Architectural Centre Inc
- Timber posts with nautical rope strung between them are being proposed for segments of the Manners Mall in Wellington, in an effort to stop people crossing the road ‘illegally’. The proposal is by a WCC Councilor, Leonie Gill, who appears shocked and horrified that Wellingtonians have such a care-free attitude to crossing the road.

Dealing with Wgtn traffic on a wing and a prayer
- Architectural Centre Inc
- I’ve been re-thinking. What if, concerning the whole Basin/Option X thing, we went right back to the fundamentals of the situation and began from there? Forget flyovers and tunnels, Options A, B, X, X+, and KY(!); forget Sussex Street, Memorial Park, and even the Basin itself. What are the fundamental issues?

- Here’s the link to the Live Blog for this morning’s WCC Coucillor’s meeting to decide upon the official WCC position with respect to the NZTA proposed Basin flyovers – courtesy of Dave Burgess of the DomPost. Local insight toward a refined proposal
- Architectural Centre Inc
- So says Rod James, of the 1900 or so submissions received by NZTA on their recently closed public consultation on the preferred options for roading improvements near the Basin Reserve. his exact words are: We are grateful to Wellingtonian’s for taking the time to review our proposals… This will provide us with valuable additional knowledge and local insight to guide us towards a refined proposal.

- I just discovered this, and thought I’d share it with you all, as it is a topical image for today – the last day of submissions on NZTA’s proposals for transport improvements near the basin Reserve. If I had sighted it earlier I would have used it to threaten those of you who have not yet made submissions in a post entitled “Make your submission to NZTA or else…!”.

Vote X
- Architectural Centre Inc
- The Friday 26 August deadline for submissions to NZTA regarding the Wellington inner-city transport projects is getting closer. We believe this is an important issue for everyone to give feedback on. Option X will tunnel State Highway One under Memorial Park, providing a space which will respect our war dead, and allow reflection and commemoration.

Polls apart – the verdict on Option X is all good

Memorial Car Park
- Architectural Centre Inc
- Since the unveiling of the NZTA schemes for around the Basin now almost a month ago, we have been having a good look at their back issues – the NZTA publications that they have been storing up away from prying eyes. Now, however, a good number of them have been published and are available on line. One of the more interesting things unveiled, is the plan of the work for the Memorial Park.

It’s just not cricket

The Public needs a real choice: Option X
- Architectural Centre Inc
- The NZTA have proposed options for redeveloping the roading of the Basin Reserve. But these are not really options. They are two schemes for flyovers which have very little difference. We believe that the scheme/s proposed by NZTA exclude the public from making a real choice.

Does the NZTA scheme measure up?
- Architectural Centre Inc
- We’ve already begun discussing issues relevant to the Basin, particularly through blog posts … but this time we’re going back to basics. Core objects of our constitution include: 1. To work for the general improvement of the urban environment. 2. To promote a true understanding of Architecture and Design amongst the community. 3. To consider, critique and recommend changes of law and administration relating to or affecting architecture and urban planning.

What About Light Rail?
- Architectural Centre Inc
- I lived in Szczecin, Poland, until I was 14. I had family in other large centers in Poland. All those cities had something in common—extensive and very well utilised light rail networks. The trams were a different colour in each city, usually coincident with the colours of the city’s coat of arms. Even at the lowest pointduring the communist regime when the people were at their poorest and the country was in a huge debt the trams were going strong, taking commuters to work, home, school, parks, shopping (when there was something to buy, anything really would do). I certainly don’t remember anyone not being able to afford to use the tram service.

Basin Checklist

- We’re keen to evaluate the Basin Reserve, and have produced a Check List of items that we believe it needs to be evaluated against – as should any other possible Basin scheme as well. We’ll be posting a critique of the official NZTA proposals next week – but first, without further ado, here are the issues that we think are the key points that any proposal really needs to address.

Traffic Congestion, Part 2: To build or not to build…
- Architectural Centre Inc
- Apparently that isn’t the question – according to our NZTA experts, yet I can’t help but wonder why the latter option (not to build), hasn’t been a part of NZTA investigations. Perhasp the RoNS steamroller is concerned more about ‘road’s than ‘transport’? Certainly it is easier to point to the achievement of four lanes from Levin to [...]

Let’s not get pwned by the RoNSter
- Architectural Centre Inc
- Save the Basin and Save Kapiti are organising a “Rail Against the Road/Expressway” rally at Parliament on Wednesday July 6th. While most of us in the Centre might not have strong opinions one way or the other on the proposed Kapiti ‘Sandhills’ scheme (?), the issue is nevertheless an important one for a number of reasons. First of all, being played out here is the age-old conflict between nationally identified objectives against local community interests (or destruction thereof). This, of course, has much resonance with our members.
