WellUrban and Restaurants and Bars

Any port in a storm
- WellUrban
- The long-awaited Port Café at Chaffers Dock finally opened yesterday, and I had a chance to pop in for lunch today. I nearly had a heart attack, but not from the grease: the mains were mostly over $20, which was not what I was expecting from a casual café and takeaway!

Manhattan roundup
- WellUrban
- My month of Manhattans didn't unearth quite as many highs and lows as my Martini explorations, partly because life's too short to try bad cocktails from every crummy bar in Courtenay Place, and partly because it's harder to get wrong.

Bouncing back 5
- WellUrban
- In the time since my summer shakedown post, there's been the expected revival in the Wellington hospitality scene, but it's a little slow and tentative so far. There are, however, several imminent or promised arrivals, so things do seem to be looking up.

Coffee in chains
- WellUrban
- The good news is that, after a slow summer, there are a lot of new cafes, restaurants and bars about to open. I can think of a dozen that are definitely on the way, with another half dozen or so intriguing rumours. The bad news is that most of the cafes that have opened recently, or are about to open soon, are chain stores.

Bleu murder
- WellUrban
- File under: food, education, Wellington, WairarapaWith Martinborough and Masterton fighting it out to be home to New Zealand's only Le Cordon Bleu International School of Cuisine, I had to ask: why not Wellington?

Plum position
- WellUrban
- As anyone who frequents Cuba St should know, Plum has been undergoing renovations for a while. The old Plum had been well-liked (as these reviews attest), but was starting to feel a little tired: perhaps somewhere between the late Krazy Lounge and Mr Bun. I expected little more than a lick of paint and some new furniture, so it's a bit of a surprise to see it in its sleek new incarnation by Alistar Cox of Matterhorn, Mojo and Mighty Mighty fame.

Il Secondo Casino
- WellUrban
- Thanks to Kegan for drawing my attention to this article in today's Dominion Post: the Bresolin family wants to reopen Il Casino. Since the closure was announced in July, and the sale of the building confirmed in September, many Wellingtonians have felt a sense of loss, so this is indeed good news.

Bar wars
- WellUrban
- The Capital Times has begun its 2006 Best of Wellington survey (not online), inviting readers to vote for their favourite things under dozens of categories. However, one category is glaringly absent: best bar. They have best barman, barmaid, music venue and nightclub, but no bar (or best Martini, for that matter).

Karked it
- WellUrban
- Krazy Lounge has Konked out. There's a sign on the door saying "Sorry, Krazy Lounge is closed forever. R.I.P.", and the inside is currently being used as a temporary sale shop for the appropriately-named fashion label Insidious Fix.
