      • Zephyr Rovers Manager Steve Hall today confirmed he would be making a submission to the Wellington City Council next week to save sport on the waterfront. "The council has decided we need a Hilton Hotel on the waterfront and I have no issue with that" said Hall "but we want to see an alternative venue for sport on the waterfront as we sure can't jog to Kilbernie at lunch time to play in the new indoor facility out there".

    • Wellington is facing rising sea levels
      • At the Wellington City Council Strategy and Policy Committee briefing of December 1 we were shown a computer model of the areas of Wellington that would be flooded by sea level rise as a consequence of global warming. One of the areas that may be impacted is the site of the Indoor Sports Centre. There is no doubt there will be consequences that will be beyond our control even if Wellington were to reduce green house gas emissions.

      • The 2010 Wellington club rugby season is just two weeks old and there’s no mud to be seen, but the pressure is already on the teams who have yet to win to register their first victories.     • The rain, the drains, the buses
      • A week or so after 30 year, 50 year, 80 year, and 100 year rain events, no answers are forthcoming about why the city was shutdown because of a slip and a large puddle. Nor are any answers forthcoming on what the Wellington City Council in particular is going to do about the woeful state of its storm water. It’s a shambles and, in the middle of all of this, emergency management was really nowhere to be seen.

It turned out that they were from Mana. K2 requested that we do a handover to free them up for other likely jobs in their area.     • The Cook Strait Rollercoaster Ride
      • Shot by an ex-workmate of Wellingtonistas Tom and Noizy, presumably spread by the magic of email, and now shared to the world thanks to someone in the UK, here's some footage to rival that of our previous YouTube hit 'Classic Landings at Wellington Airport'. This time it's some serious weather doing its thing in Cook Strait, with the captain of the ferry Suilven deciding no gigantic swells were going to stop him from getting his freight and passengers to the South Island.

      • I've been wondering when the houses relocated for the bypass would be re-inhabited, thus bringing some life back to a ravaged district. Surely it wouldn't be long before they were snapped up? But no: Karo Drive and Tonks Grove are going to look like toytown for quite some time to come.It turns out that under the Public Works Act, Transit has to look for the original owners or their descendants, and then offer the properties to them at market prices.

    • A ride that could be ruined
      • Biking around the bays is a stunning ride. But it could be ruined if traffic trebles. Cyclists will be forced off the road. Next Wednesday, Wellington City Councillors vote on a proposal to develop Shelly Bay, permitting a giant housing and shopping development. But there’s no plan to upgrade Shelly Bay Road. That could mean 3-4 vehicles every minute along a narrow road, trying to pass on blind corners. Cyclists could be expected to share a 1.5 metre path with pedestrians.

      • While it was vaguely entertaining / terrifying / gratifying / intimidating to listen to some of the 10-hour debate on the Spatial Plan the other day (pick your own adjective according to your political persuasions), what became very clear is that NO ONE – not the Mayor, not the Council Officers, Not Liam Hodgetts the City Planner, and certainly not the rabid band of Councillors – have any idea about height limits that is bounded by any semblance of the actual factual truthiness of the situation.

    • Abrupt Closure of Award Winning Wellington Brothel
      • A central, appointment based brothel that has been open since 2006 has announced that they will be closing their doors on the 29th February 2024. A statement made by the owner (who is a sex worker), announced the closure to clients with mixed emotions, stating “Although this decision is not made lightly, I believe it is the best way forward for both myself and the business”. There was no reason provided in the initial statement as to why the decision was made - at least not to clients.

      • A timely and interesting post from the WCC, showing a list of relevant accommodation providers, that may or may not have issues similar to the Loafer’s Lodge, which, as we all know, tragically burnt down and killed people. No one wants a repeat of that sordid mess, and so the great thing is that the WCC are being pro-active and trying to get ahead of the game here. Being a school trustee is an important role that needs people with a range of skills and experiences and in order that the Board reflects our community, ideally we want a good balance of gender, ethnicity and skills.  At Wellington High School, the Board of Trustees work to promote the culture and ethos of Wellington High School. We  focus on student achievement and support educational opportunities for all students in our school.  If you are interested in becoming a member of the Board of Trustees you should be prepared to make a contribution to the work of the Board, to act as part of a governance team, have the skills to ask the right questions and be prepared to participate in making decisions. Specific skills are not a requirement, however governance experience, financial management and legal skills are useful.  We would like to really encourage people to put their names forward to be nominated for election to our school board.       • No doubt many of you have had your fill of waterfront posts, but there was a slew of ill-informed letters to the editor in today's Dominion Post that I felt compelled to reply to. There are too many specific errors and misinterpretations to fit into in a 200-word rant, and I thought I'd try to tone down some of my usual vitriol, so I tried to offer a constructive discussion of why good public space design is more subtle and complex than just leaving as much empty space as possible.

    • Farewell to this land’s cheerless marshes
      • In true Wellington Council style, the games that they should axe go ahead and visa versa, so it was with no surprise that following torrential rain on Friday night and Saturday morning we’d be playing. Now I ain’t grumbling about it, cos we ain’t played since 26th June and anymore cancellations means that we have to play ‘double headers’ (Saturdays and Sundays). So I was as happy as an octopus with sixteen legs and given the state of the water on the park, maybe being a cephalopod would have faired well.

      • In the line of an old Abba song, The Winner takes it All, and so it was in the 2008 Wellington Civic Trust awards last night. A friendly Fish-monger sends in this report from the ceremony in Te Papa: The evening started off promptly, no time for drinkies (or Studio Pacific - who missed out on the news they had won the first prize of the evening by a good 5 minutes!), before leaping straight into the Awards ceremonies. First up was the award for best building in Wellington (constructed in the last 3 years).

      • Bye bye 15s hello 7s’. Well that’s it for another season- no grades won but credible finishes by most of our teams and some of the most exciting talent we have ever had coming through the grades and perhaps our greatest ever number of rep players? Next Saturday we hope to have 4 teams as the Localpoint 7s series kicks off at Porirua Park with 2 Open grade and 2 Under 20 teams playing on the top fields then out to Trentham Memorial on September 18th for the final round.
