Weekly Wrap Up (Term 4, Week 3)
- Wellington High School
- Important Dates 4 November: Senior Prizegiving 7 November: Parents notified of outcome of out of zone ballot (Years 10-13 in 2020) 8 November: NCEA exams start 25 November: Board of Trustees meeting 3 December: NCEA exams end 6 December: Junior Prizegiving 6 December: End of Term 4 What’s happening Whakanuia celebration of Māori achievement Senior students’ final day With NCEA exams just around the corner, today is our senior students’ final day of school for 2019. The day has been filled with assemblies, reminiscing, excitement, tears and sentiment. To all our seniors, we wish you all the best, whether you are sitting NCEA exams or joining the workforce, whether you are leaving us or returning to WHS in 2020. Level 3 Art Portfolio exhibition The Level 3 Art Portfolio exhibition is happening in the Art department, D block, Monday 4 November, 12pm – 5.45pm and Tuesday 4 November 9am-5pm. All welcome. Japan exchange students’ farewell Saaya Nakahara and Saki Sasakawa have been attending WHS since the end of August as part of their exchange from Osaki Kasei, WHS’s sister school in Japan. Below are some of the memories of their experience here. We arrived in NZ on August 30. We have had many experiences in just 2 months. We went to the Climate Change strike on 27 September. We have never been to a strike, so we were surprised that there were so many people. It was a good experience because we cannot join a big event like this in Sapporo. Our most exciting experience was the Ball. We do not have an event like this in Japan. This was the first time for us to go to a dance party. We took a lot of pictures with our friends in the photo booth. Our favourite photo was taken with our year 13 Japanese classmates and Grace. Thank you for giving us wonderful memories!!! Achievements NCEA Art folio exhibitions Folios were exhibited on two Fridays this term showcasing the enormous efforts students have put into their artmaking this year. Many friends parents and staff visited the exhibitions. Rowing regatta success WHS Rowing have completed in their first regatta of the season: the Queen’s cup regatta. The regatta was held over a 1000m course with all rowers competing to a high level despite the cold and windy conditions. The next race will be on 2 November and is the Norton Cup Regatta. Floorball Former WHS student Marie Sundin is transferring from Wellington Floorball Club to Swedish IBF Falun. Last month the International Floorball Federation picked Marie as one of the top three international transfers. Congratulations Marie!

SAREX Makara South Coast Exercise July 26-27 2008
- Wellington VHF Group
- This was a weekend SAREX designed to test comms on the South Coast, as well as the ability of the teams to handle the conditions! And with the "10 Year Storm" going on, it was a test. A lot of work had gone in over the week before to get the new cross band repeaters built, as you would have read in Q-Bit. These were installed on Mt Misery on the Saturday morning. The base was set up and the teams dispatched. We did a HF radio test with a Pulsar, and learnt a few things about getting wet. read more

Slow Boat Christmas/ New Year 2025
- Slow Boat Records
- Well, crikey - somehow, we have nearly made it to the end of another year at the proverbial rock'n'roll coalface - the 40th Anniversary of our founder, 'The Coach', Dennis O'Brien opening the store way back in 1985 (which we commemorated with some handsome bright yellow tee shirts and totes bearing his youthful mug!) Every year brings with it fresh challenges in seeking to keep the store relevant in a wildly changing entertainment and retail landscape, and we are, as ever, immensely grateful to you all for sticking with us, shopping with us, engaging with our Instagram and Facebook platforms, and sharing your energy and enthusiasm for music and movies, and for physical media, and for everything inbetween. We have seen your enthusiasm for vinyl remain undiminished, along with a soaring demand for CDs (hell, they are cheaper now than they were when they were introduced some 40 years ago, at the store's inception, when we thought they seemed like a bit of a fad...!) We have hosted some terrific in-store events, including Record Store Day 2025 (with instore performances from Warm Regards and Fazerdaze), The Phoenix Foundation's "Pegasus" vinyl release launch (a few dewy eyes at that one!), an impromptu instore performance from Evan Dando, plus listening parties for The Beths' "Straight Line Was A Lie" and most recently, Hayley Williams' "Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party" - all wonderful occasions that felt joyful, and like celebrations, so a great big SB shoutout to all who made those extraordinary events happen, and all who attended. Would also like to send big Slow Boat love to the friends and family of some dear people we lost this year - including the indomitable Ms Lorraine Barry, dear friend and much loved supporter of the store; you are sorely missed and hugely appreciated for all you have done for the NZ music landscape. So, without getting too sappy and sentimental, let's just conclude by saying - we are here for you, music lovers; Slow Boat will be open every day over the holiday period, with the exception of Christmas Day and New Years' Day - we will, however, be operating on a reduced hours schedule to give here everyone a chance to recover from a hectic Festive season; count on hours along the lines of 11am-4pm for the weeks immediately following Xmas... We are doing our best to make sure we have good stocks of hot ticket items in store ahead of Xmas, but there is always the sane and sensible option of the trusty Slow Boat Voucher if you can't decide, or SB branded tee shirts, totes and caps... So, all the best to you all for a safe, healthy and happy Silly Season, and hope to see you all soon!! With much aroha, respect and figgy pudding, your pals XX The Slow Boat Crew XX
