Diesel-to-electric bus conversion and Sky Stadium projects seek funding from Greater Wellington for low carbon initiatives
- Greater Wellington Regional Council
- Greater Wellington’s Climate Committee has recommended that the regional council fund two projects aimed at lowering the regional council’s carbon footprint. Metlink has applied for funding to reduce bus emissions through a diesel-to-electric power bus conversion trial, and the Wellington Regional Stadium Trust applied for funding for a study into reducing Sky Stadium’s environmental footprint. Both were considered at today’s Climate Committee meeting. Metlink seeks $550,000 to convert a diesel-powered bus to electric power and trial its operation in the Metlink fleet.

Future of Metlink On Demand to be decided by Greater Wellington
- Metlink
- The next steps for Metlink’s ‘On Demand’ public transport trial will be decided at a Greater Wellington Transport Committee meeting on 22 June. Metlink On Demand is a flexible, shared transport solution that has been trialling in Tawa and Grenada North since May 2022. Passengers use an app to request pick up and drop off at locations across the suburbs. To date the service has been well received by the community with 40,000+ trips and overall customer satisfaction measured at 96%.

Newtown Early Learning Centre
- In February 1985, a small group of parents and caregivers decided to set up a community crèche, which opened in June 1985 with one paid worker supported by parent helpers. Over time, the crèche evolved into a fully professional education centre with qualified teaching staff. The community of parents and caregivers still owns and governs the Centre, and the community is still involved in its day-to-day running.

Friends of Maara Roa
- Maara Roa is a forest restoration project at Cannons Creek Valley near Porirua. Its purpose is to restore the Bush back to what it was before the people who ruined it came. The project started in 2000, after some gorse fires destroyed yet more sections of native bush. A small group of people met to see if something could be done to stop it. The Friends of Maara Roa grew from that.
