      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Mon, 20/01/2014 - 19:30 - Tue, 21/01/2014 - 23:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  308 Mohua lost motor power due to diesel problem.  Stern gland taking on water.  Put out a panpan responded to by Southern Cross.  Coastguard called by owner of Southern Cross to take tow as restricted in its ability to manouver within the marina.  Coastgard picked up tow and continued to before the bar, the rafted up.  Crossed bar and stood to as a towed barge left the marina.  Berthed in coastguard berth with yacht alonside.  Then released raftup, pulled yacht into travelift bay to lift out as taking on water through stern gland.       • Glen Hayward selected for the forth round of the Four Plinths Temporary Sculpture project Glen Hayward's Rita Angus used to grow her own vegetables was selected by the Trustees and our Arts Advisors for the fourth iteration of the Four Plinths Temporary Sculpture Project. His work will be unveiled in February 2014 during the International Festival of the Arts and will remain in place for two years. He was unable to restart his vessel due to a loose fuel hose. Coastguard Mana were contacted directly and sent out a rescue vessel to tow him back in. Upon arriving at the scene the vessel was able to restart their engine and were escorted back to Mana. Orchestra Wellington Presents:  Roald Dahl’s Dirty Beasts, and Maui’s Fishhook 3pm Sunday 12 July The Opera House, Wellington James Rolleston received the 2014 Te Whanau O Waipareira Best Supporting Actor for his role as Mana in The Dark Horse opposite Cliff Curtis. In 2014 he also featured in The Dead Lands, directed by Toa Fraser in which he played young Maori Warrior Hongi, and both films have received critical acclaim internationally. James is also well known to New Zealand audiences from the film BOY in which he played the title role and received a nomination for Best Actor in a Lead Role at the 2010 Qantas Film and Television Awards. Since then James has appeared in three short films, here in NZ he featured in Frosty and the BMX Kid and shot in Australia he was in MAN and the yet to be released Amúa in which he plays a Rugby League player. James also featured as himself in campaigns for Vodafone for several years. Maui’s Fishhook is an original piece for orchestra and narrator written for Orchestra Wellington by its Education Composer in Residence, Thomas Goss.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 18/10/2014 - 10:15 - 14:15 Operation Type:  Other People Assisted:  0 Total Volunteer Hours:  24 On Saturday members ofthe coastguard crew carried out a number of small support opoerations, 1: Its water safety week and the harbour ranger and police teams with help from coastguard mana were providing advice on water safety. In particular our new crew man Steve was helping with the testing of lifejackets on the breastworks at the Mana Cruising Club, something in the region of 100 plus lifejackets were tested to confirm that they were buoyant and safe to use.  Some lifejackets failed the test and owners advised to replace them.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 16/02/2014 - 09:00 - 16:00 Operation Type:  Other People Assisted:  0 Total Volunteer Hours:  63 Coastguard Mana were invited to attend the Blessing of the Boats, which is part of the Island Bay Festival.  The “Blessing of the Boats” attracts crowds to the coastline to watch our decorated fishing boats put through their paces and blessed for safe carriage, and bountiful catches.  Unique to Island Bay, local and visiting Clergy venture out into the Bay to bless the fishing boats after they've circled around Tapu te Ranga Island.  So many boats and so much activity really makes this something special to see. There were approximately 30 boats there including both of our vessels, both of Coastguard Wellington's vessels and the Police boat Lady Elizabeth IV.     • Circa's Programming Process
      • Ever wanted to know how Circa chooses the plays it produces? The Circa Council is hard at work on the programme for 2014, so it seemed a good opportunity to explain to drama on the waterfront how the programming process works at Circa. Circa’s programme is the life-blood of our theatre. The Circa Council is responsible for all programming decisions and reads a large number of plays each year in order to settle on a programme which strives to match our vision: “We believe a great theatre experience inspires, entertains, transforms and nourishes the human spirit”. Circa Theatre welcomes approaches from established professional theatre directors. We have developed a two step process: 1. In the first instance, we ask directors to submit a short CV or bio along with the script of the play. We send an acknowledgement that we have received the submission, however it could then be up to six months  (depending on when it is submitted) before we respond regarding the way forward while the submission is circulated amongst the Circa Council members. All submissions are read by the Council, from which a shortlist is determined. At that stage the Circa Council will invite shortlisted directors to make a pitch for a season at the theatre. 2. Up to two 'Pitch Presentation Days’ are scheduled each year for Directors to present their pitch to the Circa Council. The programme will then be confirmed based on these pitches. If there are some slots in the programme that are still vacant after the first Pitch Presentation Day, there will be a second Pitch Presentation Day. All directors who work at Circa are required to go through the pitch process. The programme is in development for much of the year - the Council accepts submissions up to the end of June, with the Pitch Days taking place in July and September. The final programme isn't decided until the end of September, and it is kept under wraps while we create the annual brochure that is released each year at the Thorndon Fair.     • Dinghy adrift as storm approaches
      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 04/03/2014 - 13:30 - 17:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  21 Police were alerted to a 4m runabout adrift somewhere offshore to the west of Mana Island after breaking down. Communications were via a mobile phone and once Coastguard Mana were dispatched it was determined that they were in fact closer to Hunters Bank near Pukerua Bay. At the same time a severe southerly storm was approaching Wellington. CRV Trust Porirua Rescue with 5 crew members initially had difficulty locating them due to the inaccuracy of the location information given by the people on the boat. They were contacted via telephone and advised that we would release a white parachute flare to help them determine where we were in relation to them. This helped to refine the estimated position meaning that TPR could close in on the area the boat was drifting. Once closer they were advised by the Coastguard Master to activate an orange smoke flare. This was immediately spotted by the CRV crew approximately 3NM away and as they closed in on the smoke they spotted the vessel. The two men on board were getting cold but otherwise well. The fact that they had a means of communication and flares certainly saved them from a potentially disasterous situation as a southerly storm was moving up the country and expected to arrive within an hour or two.
