    • DANKE!!
      • Well, I did tell you that Record Store Day 2019 would be something special…! (pic by Tim Gruar) I mean, at that stage there was only the suggestion that blimmin’ Kurt Vile might be joining us, and we didn’t know for sure until we got a call that he and the Violators were on their way from the airport, having played 2 sold out shows in Auckland, and ahead of another sold out show here in Wellington. And it NEARLY didn’t happen, but we are so glad it did – and if you were here, good for you – it really was quite amazing to have one the most singular and unique voices in modern songwriting playing for us all here on this special day. He and his band and management were absolutely delightful, huge music fans, and KV even stuck around to sign albums and pose for pics, for which we are hugely grateful and humbled. (pic by Tim Gruar) We also enjoyed terrific sets from ex-Slow Boater/ Chill/ Verlaine Caroline Easther, who ran through some fine songs from her debut solo album, “Lucky”, with her wingman, guitar ace Alan Galloway, along with ‘Friend Of Slow Boat’ Lawrence Arabia, who shared some choice selections from his brilliant new album “Singles Club” (which may just be his finest hour yet…) (pic by Tim Gruar) So finally – can we just say a huge thankyou to everyone who made the 13th so special – to PJ who always designs us the most beautiful posters, to Ziggy from San Fran, soundguy extraordinaire Bernie Gruschow, the good people at Music Planet, Drunken Piano Touring, our suppliers, especially Universal, Rhythmethod and Southbound, to Kurt, Caroline and James/ Lawrence for the wonderful live entertainment – and finally, to you guys, the punters, some of whom queued in the cold from early in the morning to get your mitts on limited RSD collectables, and were, without exception, some of the friendliest, most enthusiastic and genuine music lovers we have encountered. The whole day felt more than just a little magical, which is more than you could reasonably expect, right…?! Give us a year to recover, and we’ll see if we can’t do it all over again, huh?! • RECORD STORE DAY 2019 AT SLOW BOAT!!!
      • Howdy, all – well, it’s nearing that time of year again, when we spend a day celebrating ourselves, and you, theoretically, get the treats!! Record Store Day 2019 at Slow Boat on the 13th of April is shaping up as one of our best yet – and that’s no idle threat, when in the past it has involved instore performances from Dave Dobbyn, Neil Finn, Anika Moa, David Kilgour, Tiny Ruins, Julia Deans, and many more musical luminaries. We will also, all things being equal, have a whole swag of limited RSD vinyl releases, plus the usual lollies, giveaways, and good vibrations! And while I realise that many have been critical of it as an event, suggesting it has become over-commercialised, is too busy, and rains on your regular Saturday vinyl-trawling buzz, spare a thought for those who are new to the game – the celebration of physical media, the culture of independent record stores, and the community that springs up around the simple, pleasurable act of flipping through vinyl records (or CDs, or DVDs, or even, God forbid, TAPES…!) , and finding something you can love and clutch to your heart. Maybe you will meet someone you share a passion for Yes with, and fall madly in love, or start a band, or make a lifelong friend… you just never know!! We are proud of our place in the Wellington musical landscape – of the relationships we have forged with people who share our love of music, and records, and the mystique that still surrounds music, and to this end we would love it if you were to come celebrate with us on the day – or any other day, for that matter, if you’d prefer. As ever, with the limited releases, no pre-orders, no holds, and while we have ordered a whole bunch of things, we don’t know what we will actually get until the day – opening the doors an hour early than usual at 9am, and having a queue building is a total delight, and we look forward to sharing details of the day soon. We are pretty psyched, that’s all I’m gonna say at this point…! So, stay tuned – we’ll let you know when there is news, and hope to see you here on the 13th of April to celebrate with us!!! xxx THE SLOW BOAT CREW xxx

    • Project Rugby
      • Prodded into action by one of our many readers, who helpfully slipped us a set of the Resource Consent drawings, we've had a chance to look at the New World ("Project Rugby") scheme that is due to clog up the Basin Reserve even more.

    • A book sale worth walking up a hill for
      • It's sale time at Vic Books again, both at the Kelburn Campus and the Pipitea store by the train station. The sale runs from Monday May 11-Thursday May 28, and if you're clever you'll figure out a way to get to the sneak preview with wine and nibbles at the Kelburn shop, from 3pm, Thursday May 7th. ‘Tis the season of twisted umbrellas, so it's time to stock up on books which will keep

    • Samurai Store Coming
      • Almost in order to prove that rumours of the death of genuine, good quality music retailers in this country have been greatly exaggerated, on November 6 Wellington will have a new specialist music retail store.

    • knitted hot-dogs and bunny quilts
      • Even though this winter hasn't been as harsh as Wellington winters of past, keeping warm still should be a number one priority. Sometimes, this means forgoing cocktails for tim-tams and movies under a soft, comforting quilted blanket (maybe with bunnies on it?), but if you are anything like me usually you can't keep still and are not very good at just relaxing- unless it's a terrible hangover. That's why I'm thinking of taking up knitting so movies, blankets and indulgent biscuits are a little justified. Maybe knitting and its sweet purity will even stop my drinking, either way today I found a new store that may inspire this possible new pastime of mine.

    • Fashionable Princesses
      • With Wellington now having its own Paper Bag Princess, there is even less reason to visit Auckland. The second hand clothing store has been hiding down in the corner of Left Bank Arcade for a while now, and rumour on the street is that more and more people are discovering its goodness.

    • Fair Trade Fortnight
      • Starting this Saturday, the 3rd of May is Fair Trade Fortnight. Fair Trade Fortnight happens all around the world and it's aim is to promote sustainable and fairtrade to 3rd world producers. We are lucky enough to have a wide range of events happening right here in Wellington over the next two weeks.

    • Mojo rising
      • Mojo already has six cafes in Wellington, and the cartel continues to expand. There's an outlet planned for the ground floor of the Watermark apartments, and according to the neighbours, there will soon be a Mojo in upper Cuba St.

    • Chews three
      • Retail space has been tight in Wellington for quite some time, especially along the Golden Mile. That's led to some retailers worrying about being "forced out of the CBD" by high rents, and while some are certainly having to move away from Lambton Quay and Willis St, that's not entirely a bad thing.

    • Shops that pass in the night 12
      • The stretch of upper Cuba St shops being redeveloped as part of The Wellington apartment and hotel complex is now almost completely tenanted. As I noted a couple of months ago, Eyeball Kicks and the superette have already moved in, and Mojo coffee and Caffé Italiano are both supposed to be on the way.

    • Getting Moore for less
      • Fashionistas may be excited to know about the very temporary-looking Andrea Moore 'workroom' set up by the bus stop on Manners St, whose windows are promising 50-70% off. But those who recently bought a (gorgeous) Andrea Moore dress at full cost might not want to read this at all...

    • Coffee in chains
      • The good news is that, after a slow summer, there are a lot of new cafes, restaurants and bars about to open. I can think of a dozen that are definitely on the way, with another half dozen or so intriguing rumours. The bad news is that most of the cafes that have opened recently, or are about to open soon, are chain stores.

    • Borders': opening Thursday
      • As Tom noted back in October, the northern portion of Capital on the Quay is to become a Borders'. Imagine a bookstore with a giant footprint, a café inside, and possibly the largest range of stock in town. That might well be what we're getting.

    • Brave New World
      • With plenty of hoopla, including three full pages in the Dominion Post, New World opened their fourth inner-Wellington store this week. It's a New World Metro at the the railway station, and while it looks tiny from the concourse, it expands Tardis-like into the forgotten parts of the station and is actually larger than the Willis St Metro.
