    • The Aesthetics Bring Skronking Noise to Wellington
      • I'd heard stories about The Aesthetics' Matthew Middleton long before I heard his music. A mutual friend told me about the time Middleton had a fancy computer and one day decided to pour red wine all over it. Just to see what would happen. It's safe to say the computer was screwed after that. I've since (but not necessarily because of) become a fan of Dunedin's The Aesthetics and I reckon you should go and see them on Friday at Happy when they bring their bratty and savage din to Wellington in a rare northern excursion. Formed in 1995 by enigmatic frontman Middleton, The Aesthetics play fearless, primitive punk rock with vintage synths and free-form noise guitar. The fiercely DIY and unstoppable outfit supported Sonic Youth in 1998. Sonic Youth's hip priest Thurston Moore liked The Aesthetics so much he released their LP My Right to Riches on his Ecstatic Peace label. There, is that enough indie cred for you?And if seeing The Aesthetics wasn't enough of a treat for you, they're playing with the Traveling Wilbury's of Wellington noise - The Stumps. Sort of a superband featuring Antony Milton (of label Pseudo Arcana), James Kirk (Dead C, Sandoz Lab Technicians, King Loser) and Stephen Clover (Seht), The Stumps is a band to be experienced live. I've seen The Stumps play scores of times, and each show is completely different yet always fantastic. Their sprawling, psyched-out improvised rock has drone and Krautrock leanings and is always sublime. Also on the bill is Panda Battle Battle Panda and Newtown. I haven't heard either of them before, though.Friday 25 JulyHappy118 Tory Street9pmwww.myspace.com/theaestheticswww.myspace.com/stumpsthe- Kiran
