    • Super Fry
      • Stephen Fry, actor, author, wit and geek, is on his way to dear sweet Wellington and we are rather excited! He's coming to Aotearoa New Zealand to film some bits for a BBC series he's presenting, Another Chance To See, where he's travelling the world, checking up on endangered species. While he's in Wellington, he'll be visiting the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary to see how the kakapo is doing (rather

    • 2008 TAWAs - the winners!
      • We all had a completely brilliant time on Thursday night at the TAWAs! It was great to see so many of y'all along there, along with the awesome nominees and a few celebrity guests (not that Wellington has any actual celebrities, but, you know...) Thanks to our fabulous sponsors who gave us swag and prizes And thanks also to Wellington Central MP Grant Robertson for presenting the Wellingtonian of

    • WellingtonOnScreen
      •   In a little office on Taranaki St, a small group of dedicated professionals (known as the NZ On Screen team) have been creating a website which celebrates and showcases television and film produced in New Zealand. A year in the making, NZ On Screen launched at the end of October and has over 300 titles available to view - many in full length, some with just excerpts. For each title there's

    • Yet another mystery bar
      • I've never been afraid of eclecticism. A dash of Kiwiana and a touch of faded grandeur can go down a treat if served with a generous slug of hipster irony (see Mighty Mighty). A grab-bag of Nana kitsch can turn into something resembling conceptual art if it's assembled with wit and flair (see Auckland's Northern Steamship Company). But sometimes it all goes horribly wrong. I know! Let's grab some

    • Dominion Post no longer suckling from Big Liquor's teet?
      • On Saturday, the big front page headline on the Dominion Post was "Cheers! We're killing ourselves" about how alcohol is responsible for injuries, health problems and crime. Today it's "Weekend of Drunken Mayhem - 1000 calls to police". Think maybe they lost a big advertising account? Full disclosure: the TAWAs have some sponsorship from Epic Beer and we're very happ

    • Cinephilia: Opening This Week
      • Too late to be of any use for Friday night entertainment, here's a summary of the films opening this week across the city. The Day the Earth Stood Still (Readings, Sky City Queensgate and Empire). That's it. The calm before the inevitable Boxing Day storm. But if Keanu Reeves playing a deadpan alien isn't enough there's always the annual 'V' Movie Marathon at the Paramount, kicking off at 4.00pm o

    • The Rainbow Reels
      •  Come down to the Film Archive this eve for the last exhibition opening of the year. Hot damn - it's a goodie! Tessa Laird, who's name you may recognise from her brilliant art writing over the years, has curated an exhibition from the Film Archive's Home Movie Collection. With such a wealth of material (over 30,000 titles) she created an arbitrary selection process based on the colours o

    • Cinephilia: Opening This Week
      • If you are considering going to the cinema this weekend, and you've already seen Bond and the other 21 films currently playing in Wellington, here's a quick guide to the new releases. Cinema owners all over the city are breathing a little easier now that two of the biggest box office releases from the States have opened at the same time. High School Musical 3: Senior Year is the third in

    • Stink Buzz
      • Stink Magnetic Tapes, the doggedly independant record company that has released music by the likes of the Mysterious Tapeman, Voodoo Savage and His Savages, Delaney Davidson, The Chandeliers and the Damned Evangelist, celebrates ten whole years of existence this December. Recently relocated from Wellington to that op-shoppers paradise of Wanganui, Stink Magnetic is holding one heck of a knees up n

    • Google Street View knows where you live
      • Google Maps have today launched Street View for Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. A few months ago, on what looks to have been early in the morning in winter, the Googlemobile drove around the streets of our fair city, photographing the streets. You can now view these streetscapes as the closest zoom-in on Google Maps. They even made it down Cuba Mall! Street View in other countries has
