Super Fry
- The Wellingtonista
- Stephen Fry, actor, author, wit and geek, is on his way to dear sweet Wellington and we are rather excited! He's coming to Aotearoa New Zealand to film some bits for a BBC series he's presenting, Another Chance To See, where he's travelling the world, checking up on endangered species. While he's in Wellington, he'll be visiting the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary to see how the kakapo is doing (rather

Gone Fishing
- Eye of the Fish
- 2008: nearly over. Lots of construction, lots of commentary. 2009: likely to be lots less of one, and who knows about the other. Thank you all for your input, your comments, your information, and your interest. Its been a blast, but its time for a break for a bit from the people behind the Maximus logon (note: one of the following images may be more true to life than the other). Hopefully Phil

End of Year 2008
- Wellington Runners & Walkers (WRW)
- Hi Everyone. One last weekly report for the year. AGM and Turkey Trot Well done Jillian in organising the Turkey Trot and laying out the route. Admittedly there were sections of the track where crampons would have come in useful as one approached the snowline, but everyone enjoyed the challenge. And congratulations to Brian Pearl who won the turkey by coming in 7 seconds within his estimated time.

Boiling Blood
- Eye of the Fish
- It seems to be such a shame to go off all ballistic on the eve of a pleasant Christmas week, but the announcement today about the cost over-runs on the Supreme Court fair made my blood boil. While normally a left of centre supporter, and one who lives in sick apprehension about the mayhem about to be unleashed upon us by National’s unrestricted puppies of Doom, the whole sorry shameful saga

- In a little office on Taranaki St, a small group of dedicated professionals (known as the NZ On Screen team) have been creating a website which celebrates and showcases television and film produced in New Zealand. A year in the making, NZ On Screen launched at the end of October and has over 300 titles available to view - many in full length, some with just excerpts. For each title there's

What’s the urgency?
- Eye of the Fish
- At face value it could be argued that the current rash of urgency infecting Parliament at the moment is no business of a group promoting discussion of architecture and urban design issues in Wellington. Over the weekend the government passed laws reinforcing (rather than strengthening) societal repulsion of violence towards children. Last week it reduced the rights of employees of small business

Yet another mystery bar
- The Wellingtonista
- I've never been afraid of eclecticism. A dash of Kiwiana and a touch of faded grandeur can go down a treat if served with a generous slug of hipster irony (see Mighty Mighty). A grab-bag of Nana kitsch can turn into something resembling conceptual art if it's assembled with wit and flair (see Auckland's Northern Steamship Company). But sometimes it all goes horribly wrong. I know! Let's grab some

Wellington goes High Tech
- Eye of the Fish
- In an act of architectural brilliance, the Duel on Vivian block of flats opposite the School of Architecture appears to be not only a green building (avocado green, or mushy pea green) with prefabricated external cladding (that I’m sure they will get around to finishing the corners on one day), but also appears to have gone all Richard-Rogers-style High-Tech on us, with the south facade feat

Dominion Post no longer suckling from Big Liquor's teet?
- The Wellingtonista
- On Saturday, the big front page headline on the Dominion Post was "Cheers! We're killing ourselves" about how alcohol is responsible for injuries, health problems and crime. Today it's "Weekend of Drunken Mayhem - 1000 calls to police". Think maybe they lost a big advertising account? Full disclosure: the TAWAs have some sponsorship from Epic Beer and we're very happ

It’s part of the Litmus series of One Day Sculpture, and this time has been brought to you by artiste duo Heather and Ivan Morison. Threats to Waywardness
- Eye of the Fish
- This city of ours has some fabulous little pedestrian byways and shortcuts which make walking at times a slightly smug activity - those few moments that cars don’t have an advantage over foot traffic, and steps which even challenge seasoned mountain bikers. We even enjoy the occasionally misplaced carpark - the ones which were bought to be built on but the developer’s luck has turned,
