Civic pride
- The Wellingtonista
- It may not be Wellingtonista Awards season just yet, but here's another chance to put in a plug for your favourite things in the Wellington built environment. The Wellington Civic Trust Awards are coming up, and the trust wants your nominations for the best recent contributions in the following fields: Building Heritage Environmental Public Space Street Art Nnominations close on the 18th of August, and nominated projects must have been completed since the previous awards in 2005. There's also a separate voting form for best new sculpture, and if the sculpture that does it for you isn't on that list, you could always nominate it in the Street Art category.

Talking 'bout the weather
- The Wellingtonista
- Apparently all hell is breaking loose in the Hutt: rumours of heavy rain warnings abound, and messages are going around offices advising people living in Eastbourne to head home NOW. Certainly the radar shows some nasty stuff around, the result of the southerly making its way northwards, and the rainfall sensors and stream flows are starting to pick up. If anything dramatic starts to happen, do let us all know!

snapped? (toru)
- The Wellingtonista
- Today, reader DaveK let us know that Snapper cards have finally gone on sale at a couple of retailers in town, at least. They're also available, along with the card readers that allow WinIE types to do refills at home, from the Snapper website.

The bloggers who drank Molesworth
- The Wellingtonista
- It's one thing to look for food in the government quarter, but what a politico barfly wants to know is "Where can I get a decent Champagne within crawling distance of Parliament?".

Cinephilia: Film Festival preview
- The Wellingtonista
- The Film Festival has been a fixture of Wellington's winter calendar for nearly 40 years and for those of us who organise our lives around glowing rectangles of one kind or another there is no better way to spend a cold and wet afternoon than in the comfy leather chairs at the Embassy, engrossed in a work of art. Programming a Festival like Wellington may seem easy but I can assure you it's getting tougher every year.

- The Wellingtonista
- So we can confirm that yes, the new Snapper cards do work pretty well in the buses (based on the small sample of one attempt earlier today using our trial USB snapper pictured).

Something smells like fish
- The Wellingtonista
- For those of you who've never heard of Nanook, Thursday night's screening at the Film Archive is unmissable. Widely considered the first feature length documentary ever made (shot in 1922) it's an exceptional account of Inuit life on the ice.

Real-time Bus Information
- The Wellingtonista
- I'm a big fan of real-time bus information - electronic signs that use GPS technology to tell you precisely when the next bus is coming, rather than having to rely on the theoretical arrival time of the printed timetable. These have been up and running in Auckland for a few years now, and when I was living there it made catching a bus just that much easier. So it's exciting to see that the Greater Wellington regional council are in the process of planning a real time bus info system.
