    • Dinghy adrift as storm approaches
      • 9 Mar 2014
      • Coastguard Mana
      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 04/03/2014 - 13:30 - 17:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  21 Police were alerted to a 4m runabout adrift somewhere offshore to the west of Mana Island after breaking down. Communications were via a mobile phone and once Coastguard Mana were dispatched it was determined that they were in fact closer to Hunters Bank near Pukerua Bay. At the same time a severe southerly storm was approaching Wellington. CRV Trust Porirua Rescue with 5 crew members initially had difficulty locating them due to the inaccuracy of the location information given by the people on the boat. They were contacted via telephone and advised that we would release a white parachute flare to help them determine where we were in relation to them. This helped to refine the estimated position meaning that TPR could close in on the area the boat was drifting. Once closer they were advised by the Coastguard Master to activate an orange smoke flare. This was immediately spotted by the CRV crew approximately 3NM away and as they closed in on the smoke they spotted the vessel. The two men on board were getting cold but otherwise well. The fact that they had a means of communication and flares certainly saved them from a potentially disasterous situation as a southerly storm was moving up the country and expected to arrive within an hour or two. • Call-out stats - August 2013
      • 2 Sep 2013
      • Stokes Valley Volunteer Fire Brigade
      • During the month of August, Stokes Valley Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to a total of 13 incidents.  We attended six fires, from the very small (a smoking light-fixture) to the extremely large "4th Alarm" factory fire in Petone on the 23rd August.  We also attended four medical emergencies during the month and there were three false alarms. Even with another fairly significant (magnitute 6.6) earthquake on 16th August, the Wellington region seemenly dodged another bullet and the brigade had absolutely no earthquake-related incidents to attend to.  Let's keep our fingers crossed that that remains the case for many, many years to come! Call-outs for August 2013 Fires 6 Motor Vehicle Crashes 0 Medical 4 Special Services 0 Cover-moves 0 False Alarms 3 TOTAL: 13

    • Call-out stats - July 2013
      • 31 Jul 2013
      • Stokes Valley Volunteer Fire Brigade
      • Despite the Wellington region being rocked by a strong 6.5 magnitude earthquake on 21st July, Stokes Valley Volunteer Fire Brigade attended less than half the number of call-outs in July than in June. The storm that hit the region back in June kept the brigade much busier than the recent earthquake did, which, in a funny kind of way, is probably a good thing (considering the utter devastation that the people down in Canterbury have had to deal with). The brigade were called out to just two earthquake-related incidents, including one to Hutt Hospital.
