Roadkill and official information release shows growing mustelid pest problem for region
- Greater Wellington Regional Council
- In bad news for birdlife, roadkill and trappings have shown that Transmission Gully is a mustelid highway - with stoats, ferrets and weasels among the animals using it to get around. An official information release from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport agency shows 226 pests were trapped between November 2022 and January 2024, with rats, stoats, weasels, hedgehogs, mice, ferrets, possums, and rabbits all making the list. Chair of Greater Wellington, Daran Ponter, says that the news is worrying for conservation efforts like Capital Kiwi and Predator Free Wellington and that current central government budgets are wholly inadequate.

WCC Revists Earlier Assessment Not to Provide RECYCLING WHEELIE BINS to Hobson St
- Thorndon Residents Assocation
- Recycling wheelie bins were introduced across the city in 2011; but not to the properties in Hobson St, situated on the Thorndon Flat. Residents from Hobson St recently re-approached the Council regarding the earlier assessment of their street as being not suited to Council supplied recycling wheelie bins. The early assessment had indicated that Hobson St had a high volume traffic flow (similar to Tinakori Rd), and that due to the road width there was potential to block access to emergency services.

Why I voted against Mayor Prendergast for Local Government New Zealand
- Bryan Pepperell - Back To The Future
- The position of president of Local Government New Zealand is too important to be held by a peak oil denier. That is why I would not support Mayor Prendergast in her bid for the position. Peak oil is the most serious issue that we face on a local and global level. I made that clear while the Dompost reporter was recording proceedings. Furthermore, the mayor has shown nothing of the balancing qualities needed in a democratic role. Democracy is much bigger than one person getting their way. Majority rule is always to be balanced with minority protection and sharing the benefits.Bryan Pepperell Wellington City Councillor for Southern

Neutral aspirations
- WellUrban
- Thanks to ShoppingFix for pointing out that at tonight's Strategy & Policy meeting, Wellington City Council will consider becoming carbon neutral. At first I thought that this just referred to the council's own operations, but on reading the report it turns out that they also intend for the whole city of Wellington to become carbon neutral.
