Wellington’s 100-year-old prison garden
- Wellington Scoop
- I recently took a trip to the Prison Garden on Matai Moana Mount Crawford. After a winding trip up the hill to the car park, we doubled back to the mulch mound, and the somewhat hidden entrance to the garden. This is one of the best views in Wellington – Mount Crawford is 163m high.

Town Hall meeting at Enjoy
- Wellington Scoop
- For a few hours on Saturday, the Enjoy contemporary artspace in Cuba Street’s Left Bank felt like the venue of a town hall meeting. People gathered to discuss and celebrate the recent publication of Ko Te Reo ō Ngā Tāngata / The People’s Voice, a citizens’ newspaper with creative writing, columns, stories, photography, artwork, and even crosswords. Many of the contributors, almost all tenants of City Housing, were present, as were public art advocates Mark Amery and David Cook, and Enjoy hosts Claire Harris and Sam Kirk.

Why we need MRT
- Wellington Scoop
- At a time of close scrutiny of the LGWM programme, with some Wellington city councillors calling for it to be abandoned and an opposition party ready to scrap it if they win power, it is time to reflect on just why we need Mass Rapid Transport and what the consequences for our region will be if this doesn’t go ahead.

How LGWM should be fixing the traffic – now
- Wellington Scoop
- If LGWM truly wanted to get traffic moving faster, it could start work tomorrow. For those of you (like me) with elephantine memories, the Basin Flyover Inquiry identified a number of things that could be done – and SHOULD be done – and a number of things that must NEVER be done.

Festival looks to future
- Wellington Scoop
- Judging by the two bikes outside (one mine), the Festival of the Future wasn’t for cyclists. Food was also scarce at the outset of the two-day first event at Takina, Wellington’s stylish new convention centre. But that was remedied on day two and there’s a lovely cafe on the ground floor of the impressive building.
