Yes or no? What’s your opinion?
- Wellington Scoop
- Yesterday, councillors resisted pressure to spend $6.9million on a temporary conference centre. Iona Pannett led the successful campaign against the big spending, and got majority support for expenditure of only $875,000. Ngaire Best moved an unsuccessful amendment to spend the larger amount. It was a narrow vote: 7 to 6.

The roar of the traffic at the Basin
- Wellington Scoop
- Imagine you’re at a Test match at the Basin Reserve. Virat Kohli is at the crease. He’s on 99, eyeing up the options for his century: perhaps a push into the covers, perhaps a leg glance. The bowler runs in, thinking he has a chance, thinking that Kohli might be distracted by the impending century. He gathers himself, leaps, delivers. The ball is overpitched outside off stump, perfect for a cover drive. But as Kohli prepares to play it, he is distracted by the roar of a truck as it races along the motorway flyover that arches past the north-eastern boundary of the ground.

Willis Street: “flawed and dangerous”
- Wellington Scoop
- “Flawed and dangerous.” After two expensive council makeovers of Willis Street within the last three years, we’ve been given an official verdict on the failure of the re-design. The “flawed and dangerous” verdict on Willis Street is an authoritative one. It comes from deputy mayor Ian McKinnon, quoted in the print edition of the DomPost on Saturday morning after retailers had taken action against the barriers which were a last-ditch attempt by the council to stop pedestrians being hit by buses.
