    • The Great Escape - Karori Slapperz 3 - Naenae 3
      • On a Saturday that everyone assumed the games would be cancelled the mighty Karori Slapperz were transferred to Adventure Park in Whitby. After a mission for some of the fellas to find the park we assembled out the front of the changing rooms on what was actually a fine day for a game of football, sunny with a light southerly breeze. The team managed to pick itself due to injuries and absences.

    • Boiling Blood
      • It seems to be such a shame to go off all ballistic on the eve of a pleasant Christmas week, but the announcement today about the cost over-runs on the Supreme Court fair made my blood boil. While normally a left of centre supporter, and one who lives in sick apprehension about the mayhem about to be unleashed upon us by National’s unrestricted puppies of Doom, the whole sorry shameful saga

Conrad Martens painted this view of Kororareka, the site of modern Russell, in 1841. It’s based on sketches which he made during on a brief visit there in 1835. Martens had left the Beagle by this point, but the ship passed through New Zealand la

    • Puni accomodation
      • Looking up Vivian St, past the closed down peepshows and the sadly tacky brothels, a new building can be spied on the hill.  It’s the new student accommodation block called Te Puni, and the neighbours on the hill are in trepidation - apparently 375 horny 18 year olds are inside. Yes, it will be noisy - expect lots of puking in the bushes for the first few weeks, and then they’ll settl

      • BNU 16 2 v Karori Kittenz 7 Karori were certainly no pussies, demonstrating deadly skills on the counter attack on a hard McAllister Park pitch. With five changes to the lineup, BNU were again guilty of a sluggish start and found themselves chasing the game from as early as the tenth minute. Despite controlling the game in midfield for the majority of the first half, the home side went in at the b

    • Cut and Cover
      • In a surprise move, the possibility of lowering State Highway One past the National War Memorial was announced on the front page of the weekend paper. At the Architectural Centre, we have been advocating this for a number of years now - we hosted a Symposium on the design of the ‘Memorial Park’ in 2007, and the over-whelming feedback from the group of assembled experts was that the roadway through the park should be lowered.

    • BNU Reserves v Upper Hutt City 16/5/2009
      • BNU Reserves 1 - Upper Hutt City 2 Wakefield park was in pretty good nick after all the rain during the week. The windy weather was threatening but held off until after our game. BNU fielded a good competitive team and dominated the beginning of the first half. We created chances and we're unluck not to score on several attacking pieces. Late in the first half Upper Hutt put on the pressure and we

    • Bus drivers, cyclists swap points of view
      • CRAIG Bush now knows what it’s like to have a 12-tonne bus bearing down on him on the road. He’s usually the one driving the bus, but in a road-awareness workshop in Kilbirnie he got to swap the safety of his driver’s seat for a cycle saddle. “I am used to having my rear vision mirrors,” he says. “Not being able to see cars until they were right behind me was intimidating.”

    • Weekly Bulletin: Staying connected as a church - 16 June 2024
      • Kia ora St John’s whānau, This Sunday Martyn Day will preach on the Bible passage Luke 1:26-38 – which is about the birth of Jesus being announced to Mary! We would normally hear this part of the Gospel story just before Christmas – what will Martyn draw out of this passage for us this Sunday? Students, staff and families from Aitken House at Scots College will join us for worship, with students leading parts of our worship. The burning bush is a symbol of Aitken House. Our children have their peer group time, going out part-way through the service (after the Sung Blessing). Our youth will stay in for the full service this Sunday. If you can’t gather in the city, and you want to join the worship service via Zoom, here are the details to access the live-stream: Zoom Meeting ID: 370 260 759 Passcode: worship The link to join the Zoom worship service is below. If using your phone: dial 04 886 0026 (Meeting ID: 370 260 759#, Passcode: 1560107#) This is the link to the printable Service Sheet: Order of Service Link to Zoom Service OTHER THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT... DUTY ROSTERS – SERVING OTHERS It’s time to prepare the rosters for serving in July - October. Please let Linda van Milligan know your availability for this season by 20 June. UPDATE ON CAFÉ All the residents of the Dixon Street Flats have been moved out – so what has happened to the regular Café St John’s has been part of…? Read all about the next phase of the Café here: St John's Café FOLLOW ME SERIES – CARE FOR CREATION How can we practice the care of creation as an act of worship? Over four weeks we will explore the practice of Care for Creation. This continues our emphasis of putting our faith into practice, and will focus on our desire for knowing God more through intentional practices, relationships, and experiences. We will be doing this as a community of all generations, starting with an intergenerational service on Sunday 23rd June. STUDENT STUDY SPACE A massive thank you to the big team of volunteers who were the ‘friendly face’ of us as a Church for students wanting a warm quiet space to study. Making this space available for the students in our city preparing for their exams was an experiment for us as part of our Vision to connect more with our neighbourhood – creating safe spaces to be, to belong, and to navigate the tough stuff. We continue to pray for those with exams, and that they may know the support of our community throughout the year, and for ‘all of life’. CHURCH CAMP We’re excited to let you know there's a church camp happening this year! It's at Paekakariki Holiday Park from Fri evening 20 Sept till Sunday 22 Sept. We’ll be aiming to keep costs down and you can choose to sleep in the lodge, pitch a tent or stay in an onsite cabin (more details will be available at a later stage.) (FYI - El Rancho/Forest Lakes and Kaitoke were booked for this date.)
