      • Served by Bianca Maria Schioler (she/her) Kia ora tātou and welcome back to another season of Meal Steals which your StudyLink budget won’t kick up a fuss about. On today’s menu we’re going to take a trip to the famous Cuba Street, well known to any Wellingtonian as the street for excellent food and creative expression. Sadly, Covid-19 saw the closure of many iconic Cuba Street restaurants, and only a few new ones have popped up in their place in the following years. However, we can contribute to making Cuba Street the same vibrant, cultural-mixing glass of culinary excellence it once was by taking to the streets, and filling our tummies.

    • More Pedestrians on Cuba St Will Destroy Business, Say Campaigners
      • A coalition of business owners on Cuba St are petitioning the Council to reconsider its plan to remove 20 car parks along the stretch of road between Ghuznee and Vivian. Organised by (unsuccessful) Lambton Ward candidate and famed Kaffee Eis creamslinger, Karl Tiefenbacher, the “Park It” campaign hinges itself on business owners arguing that losing the 20 car parks will make a significant impact on their profit margins. “The thing to remember is that a lot of people walk here, obviously, and I get stupid statements like, ‘cars don’t spend money, people do’, but cars don’t drive themselves either, so every car brings an extra person to Cuba St,” he told Salient. “You know, we’re selling a low cost product, and we need a lot of turnover, so if we lose something like 10% of our business [by having no car parks], that’s enough to send us under.”

    • Record store day 2024 at slow boat!!!
      • Slow Boat is again thrilled to share with you our plans for Record Store Day 2024!! After the success of last year’s event, we have again agreed to co-ordinate with our dear neighbours at 173 Cuba Street, the venerable Flying Nun Records, so that there won’t be any clashes for our respective instore performances, which we are thrilled to announce thus; Flying Nun; 1pm – Living Clipboards – featuring Marineville’s Mark Williams, along with Ghost Club’s Denise Roughan and Jim Abbot – their “All Over Tawa” album is released on the day! Slow Boat; 2pm – Bleeding Star – fresh from the previous weekend’s Otisfest event at San Fran, the excellent Poneke/ Wellington indie guitar band will present their songs in a stripped back, largely acoustic fashion. Flying Nun; 3pm – Cruelly – grungy, punky, shoegazy? Who can say – what it is is life affirming, melodic noise from this young Wellington band – come check it out! Slow Boat; 4pm – Erny Belle (duo) - after the success of her superb second album (on the Flying Nun label), the Tamaki Makaurau/ Auckland based singer songwriter will perform in a duo setting – can’t wait!! We will also be opening at the earlier time of 9am (to give the eager beaver/ early bird RSD queuers an hour less to wait!), and will be bringing you an array of limited RSD vinyl exclusives for your delectation – you know the drill; no holds, no reserves - first in, best fed!! Thoroughly looking forward to what has become a real highlight of the record shop calendar, and to a day where we celebrate vinyl, music, and the culture of the independent record store!!
