A possible Basin Reserve flyover has emerged again in a new “surprise survey” from LGWM
- Save the Basin Reserve!
- The Save the Basin Campaign Inc has written the following letter in response to the new Let’s Get Welly Moving “surprise survey” which LGWM chose not to notify stakeholder groups, such as Save the Basin, about: The STBC, as a stakeholder group in the LGWM consultation process, takes strong issue with your organisation on a number of matters in relation to the existence of this survey: The survey has taken everyone at STBC by complete surprise. What is the purpose of the survey and who has it been distributed to? There was no prior notification to STBC (as a stakeholder) that LGWM would be commissioning the survey and it was only by chance that a member of the STBC committee was alerted to its existence. This is alarming and shows a complete lack of transparency and questions the validity of the survey. The process for public engagement on the LGWM scenarios closed in November last year – and in March this year LGWM released the summary of the feedback process on future transport scenarios for Wellington. Your website currently says “We’re using the feedback from the November 2017 public engagement to help guide our work as we develop a recommended programme of investment.” However, you continue to be asking for more views and ideas through this latest survey – with no information about this available to the public through your website. Of great concern is the fact the survey implies that a bridge/fly-over around the Basin Reserve is still an option – especially in the way the questions are constructed and presented. For example in relation to design, one survey respondent said that the preferences for infrastructure around the Basin gave options for a bridge or tunnel on one page – suggesting that there were only two options – then on the next page the last part of this question appeared offering an at grade option. Although we are not circulating the survey to our members to complete, we know that others who have been alerted to the survey may. If the survey was designed to be filled in by certain individuals or organisations, either targeted or randomly selected, the results will be invalidated if others complete it. No-one should trust the results of this survey. We would appreciate a response to this email. [etc]

Why community consultation is needed, not melodrama, after flyover rejection
- Wellington Scoop
- The Architectural Centre, one of a number of groups opposing the Basin flyover, urges the region’s mayors and the Transport Agency not to shut the community out of discussions on possible future options for the Basin Reserve and other future Wellington transport projects.

Is it time to dust off Wellington’s 2004 Gehl Report?
- Wellington Region Cycleways
- Is it time to dust off for a reread the Danish firm, Gehl Architects’ 2004 Report for Wellington’s City to Waterfront Study? The NZTA are often accused of sham public consultations and then doing whatever they want, and that may well be the case for what they are now calling The Tunnel to Tunnel Inner City Transport Improvements.

Hands Around The Basin: Sunday 25 September, 12 noon
- Sustainable Wellington Transport
- As you probably know, consultation on the NZ Transport Agency’s ill-conceived flyover designs have now closed. But we’re increasingly concerned that the Agency intends ignoring the groundswell of opposition, as they did in a previous stage of consultation – where 79% of submissions were opposed to a flyover. So we think it’s time to show how committed Wellingtonians are to keeping the Basin Reserve as a green space in the centre of our city.

Local insight toward a refined proposal
- Architectural Centre Inc
- So says Rod James, of the 1900 or so submissions received by NZTA on their recently closed public consultation on the preferred options for roading improvements near the Basin Reserve. his exact words are: We are grateful to Wellingtonian’s for taking the time to review our proposals… This will provide us with valuable additional knowledge and local insight to guide us towards a refined proposal.

Yesterday’s Solution
- Sustainable Wellington Transport
- In 2011, you would think two considerations would be central to transport planning; the need to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on oil. Think again… The New Zealand Transport Agency has released for consultation its scheme for the inner city section (Cobham Drive to Buckle St) of its grand Levin to Wellington Airport superhighway. What the scheme amounts to is a road building extravaganza that reeks of the 1960s and 1970s. The salient point about NZTA’s consultation is that it offers no choice. The key projects including a flyover at the Basin Reserve and a second Mt Victoria Tunnel are a fait accompli. So the public is not given any meaningful options, such as the public transport alternative.

- We’re part of the way through the public “consultation” phase of the NZTA schemes for “improvements” around the Basin Reserve, and so far we’ve only heard one side of the story. For whatever reasons, political, Machiavellian, or incompetence, only the “two options” have been proffered to the public by the roading lobby. That’s a real [...]

NZTA are spineless

Another delay before we’re consulted about Basin Reserve roading options
- Wellington Scoop
- The Mount Victoria community has been expecting consultation about roading changes around the Basin Reserve since last October. But yesterday, consultation was postponed again. The delay means there’s more time for the Architectural Centre’s innovative cut-and-cover plan (above) to get some serious consideration.

Rumour: five options for the Basin, consultation starts 22 February
- Save the Basin Reserve!
- Rumours are flying that the NZ Transport Agency will begin consultation on the options for the Basin Reserve on Monday 22 February, and that five options will be presented - three involve building an unnecessary flyover, and two are "at grade", i.e. ground level without a flyover. Consultation will run for six weeks.

The NZTA consultation process
- Save the Basin Reserve!
- Before Christmas the NZ Transport Agency began an "engagement process" with groups who are regarded as stakeholders in the Basin Reserve project. (This is euphemistically referred to as the "Basin Reserve Traffic Improvements", rather than being called a flyover. George Orwell would be proud.) In a series of meetings - which included the Save The Basin Reserve Campaign - NZTA outlined the next stages of the consultation process.

Submission document for the Regional Land Transport Management Programme
- Save the Basin Reserve!
- Worryingly, the Council has placed the Basin Reserve flyover as number two on its list of priorities, which raises the very real danger that they will proceed with this ill-conceived project as a matter of urgency. We're therefore asking supporters to put in a submission reqesting that the project be dropped.

Cost of flyover rises by $10 million (Updated)
- Save the Basin Reserve!
- In the original consultation documents for the Ngauranga to Airport Corridor Plan, the flyover was being costed by NZTA at $27 million - although they have declined to provide any substantiation for their figures, and are currently claiming "commercial sensitivity" for how these numbers were arrived at. But in the media coverage of the prioritisation of the flyover as the number 2 item on the regional transport wish-list, the cost has inexplicably risen by $10 million, to a quoted $37 million.
