Cinephilia: Opening This Week
- The Wellingtonista
- Looks like the weekend is going to be beautiful, again. Perfect weather for, ahem, sitting in a darkened air-conditioned room watching a flickering light on a screen. And Hollywood has come to the party with a couple of films that are going to make sitting in the sunshine seem like the most natural thing in the world.

Turn OFF your lights - 8-9pm tomorrow (Saturday)
- The Wellingtonista
- Support the Earth Hour initiative tomorrow (Sat 28th) and turn off your lights between 8pm-9pm. But it will be dark! I know ... fun eh!? Light candles, play spooky games (I recommend Werewolf) or tell ghost stories - in essence HAVE FUN! And it's not just about the lights, that's the minimum. If you can turn off anything else then do so - how about turning off the computer!!!

Belmont 11kV Supply - Trees to be Cut Down

- As you will see from my last entry, power to Belmont was disconnected due to the significant fire hazard posed by trees touching the 11kV power lines. I am pleased to inform you that unless extenuating circumstances present themselves a permanent power line corridor will be cut through the trees tomorrow (Thursday). If all goes to plan power should be able to be reconnected by the weekend. Brian Fearnley President Wellington VHF Group Inc

Metropol-itan ?
- Eye of the Fish
- Hot on the heels of the Barrio development comes another development of inner-city apartments (first blogged on WellUrban). This one is designed by Archaus - the most prolific architects in Wellington. The site has had a couple of schemes proposed for it previously: one by Abri Architects of Auckland which was shot down in flames pretty quickly, and the other, curvy one that never really saw the light of day except for a feature in the Wellurban blog. This one may be around a little longer. The site, is a highly sought after corner close to Cuba St, right on the edge of Ghuznee St and Leeds St. Looking at architects drawings it seems to be about 14 stories tall.

Belmont - Possible Disruption to Services

- There may be some disruption to Belmont services over the next week. A number of trees have grown up into the 11kV supply line to the Belmont site and present a significant forest-fire hazard to the landlord's forest. As such the power has been disconnected. Until the power can be restored it will be attempted to run reduced services on a combination of batteries and a mobile generator.

The Hilton vanishes?
- Eye of the Fish
- The potential Hilton hotel has had the appeals against its consent upheld, signalling what is likely to be the end of the controversial waterfront proposal. Having started the applications process back in later 2005, the news seems like it will be a decisive blow to the project; although an appeal is possible, it must go through the High Court.

Mike Grace's Cook Strait Crossing Attempt
- Wellington Rowing Club
- Wellington Senior Men's rower Mike Grace, along with Star rower Ben Dunsheath, set out on 15 March on their first attempt to cross Cook Strait in an ocean-going rowing boat. The forecast was for a great day - 2-5 knot northerly winds and a light sea swell. However, after about half way through the trip (taking an hour and 45 mins) the wind was up to 20 knots, and Mike and Ben were forced to pull out. The attempt has not lowered the spirits of the pair, and they plan on having another crack at the crossing as soon as Wellington's weather co-operates.

Fast foward to now though, and in 2008, Indigo is now San Francisco Bathhouse, and Nixx-Til-Sixx has been replaced by the fabulous DJ Doofus, but the same thing is happening.
