Cinephilia: Opening This Week
- The Wellingtonista
- Looks like the weekend is going to be beautiful, again. Perfect weather for, ahem, sitting in a darkened air-conditioned room watching a flickering light on a screen. And Hollywood has come to the party with a couple of films that are going to make sitting in the sunshine seem like the most natural thing in the world.

Turn OFF your lights - 8-9pm tomorrow (Saturday)
- The Wellingtonista
- Support the Earth Hour initiative tomorrow (Sat 28th) and turn off your lights between 8pm-9pm. But it will be dark! I know ... fun eh!? Light candles, play spooky games (I recommend Werewolf) or tell ghost stories - in essence HAVE FUN! And it's not just about the lights, that's the minimum. If you can turn off anything else then do so - how about turning off the computer!!!

Local bar: Ageists
- The Wellingtonista
- I'm appalled to discover that local Wellington sports establishment the 'Big Kumara', home of more giant TVs than your local Harvey Norman, is willing to ban a willing drinker because he's "too old".

Cinephilia: Opening This Week
- The Wellingtonista
- The Festival of the Arts has been soaking up almost every spare minute of my working day so this is going to be a bare bones update.

Letterboxes for Writers & Readers Week
- The Wellingtonista
- I'm just guessing that the reason the letterbox outside Borders Bookstore in Lambton Quay has been happily talking to itself (possibly with Emily Perkins' voice) all week, has something to do with Writers & Readers Week.

Cinephilia: Opening This Week
- The Wellingtonista
- After the excitement of the pre-Oscar rush it's another quiet week at the cinema. Opening all over town (that's Readings, Empire, Penthouse, Regent-on-Manners and Lighthouse Petone) is the historical drama The Other Boleyn Girl featuring the dream team of Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson along with Eric Bana as 'Enery the Eighth.

Late-night shenanigans are back on the menu!
- The Wellingtonista
- There was a while in 2005 when you knew that on Friday and Saturday nights you could go to Indigo, and they'd be open, and there'd be Nixx-Til-Sixx spinning everything from Bloc Party to Motley Crue and you could drink until 6am. And then that stopped and it sucked. Fast foward to now though, and in 2008, Indigo is now San Francisco Bathhouse, and Nixx-Til-Sixx has been replaced by the fabulous DJ Doofus, but the same thing is happening.

Hutty goodtimes
- The Wellingtonista
- The Hutt is a seething mass of culture (as if you didn't know), and at the moment there is a particularly splendid outdoor exhibition of sculpture, Shape Shifter.

Something fishy going on
- The Wellingtonista
- Which waterfront restaurant, famous for its seafood, is unlikely to be telling its guests that their special fish de jour Sole is actually frozen, not fresh?

A city littered with poetry
- The Wellingtonista
- Now, everybody has seen the poetry which seems to appear just about everywhere down near the lagoon and around Te Papa, right? This one took me by surprise though. It's Fiona Kidman, and is in such a comparatively out-of-the-way place I literally stumbled across it.
