Building on top of a sewer tank
- Eye of the Fish
- This post was going to be called “New School of Music” but then I thought – no, hold on, this could really cause a stink. What if…? Is it? Was it? No, surely not. But maybe….? Who knows? I’ve just been alerted to the revised scheme for what was at one stage known as the new “School of Music” down by the Michael Fowler Centre – or more accurately, on the site of the MFC carpark and smack bang in the viewpoint of the Amora Hotel. Amazingly, it is a full public notification, and must be costing someone millions to do this – and it closes in just a very few days. Monday?

Feedback time again
- Eye of the Fish
- Slowly but surely, at a majestic but glacial pace, Let’s Get Wellington Moving are moving forwards. Well, moving, at least. Maybe it is forwards. Maybe it is sideways. But at least it is not backwards. They’ve released some proposals, and want your / our feedback. And that means it is time for a closer look.

42m is TOO Tall
- Eye of the Fish
- While there is a need for good commentary on the Draft District Plan, expecting us ordinary citizens to go about our everyday jobs and still have the coherence to comment authoritatively on several hundred pages of new District Plan is asking a little too much of this particular Fish and their day job. So unless I get particularly creative and energetic over the next weekend, I think that on the whole the DP is going to go uncommented on. With the exception of just one area: Height.

Four upcoming submittals
- Eye of the Fish
- We are being asked to submit comments on four completely separate but highly important matters at the same time. If you thought that the run up to Christmas was getting tight for time this year, then get ready for it to be even more tight in terms of your time. Firstly, one you may not have been aware of: the proposal by KiwiRail and InterIslander to build new terminus stations in both Picton and Wellington, in order to tie in with the arrival of two new ferries due here in three years time. You can find out more about this proposal here. I’m not sure when they want the feedback by, but I’m sure that they want some feedback!

Adelaide Hotel
- Eye of the Fish
- It’s seldom that projects get publicly notified these days – the developers usually have it their own way with everything being done behind closed doors. You have to do something seriously different to raise the ire of the Planning Department enough that they feel they have no option but to make it known to the public. The Adelaide Hotel is one such scheme.

Cobham Drive
- Eye of the Fish
- You may already be aware of this world-breaking event, but in case you are not, here’s the news: LGWM have actually made a decision! Of course, now having made a decision, they now want to ask us our opinion on their momentous decision. So, this post, the topic of discussion is all about the proposed Cobham Drive crossing. Seeing as their method of discussion is all behind closed doors (they are calling for submissions by the end of July), I though that it might be more useful to have some discussion in public, and the Eye of the Fish seems to be a good place to discuss that.

Appropriate height limits
- Eye of the Fish
- While it was vaguely entertaining / terrifying / gratifying / intimidating to listen to some of the 10-hour debate on the Spatial Plan the other day (pick your own adjective according to your political persuasions), what became very clear is that NO ONE – not the Mayor, not the Council Officers, Not Liam Hodgetts the City Planner, and certainly not the rabid band of Councillors – have any idea about height limits that is bounded by any semblance of the actual factual truthiness of the situation.

Growth for Growth’s Sake
- Eye of the Fish
- “Art for Art’s sake – Money for God’s sake”. Or as we have it now, Growth for Growth’s sake. We now have a Council that has passed the Spatial Plan, in a decision that some have described being a battle over young vs old. Up to 80,000 more people will be able to live in our city, in a gradual process over the next 30+ years.

Local insight toward a refined proposal
- Architectural Centre Inc
- So says Rod James, of the 1900 or so submissions received by NZTA on their recently closed public consultation on the preferred options for roading improvements near the Basin Reserve. his exact words are: We are grateful to Wellingtonian’s for taking the time to review our proposals… This will provide us with valuable additional knowledge and local insight to guide us towards a refined proposal.

A Viable Arch Centre Alternative?
- Eye of the Fish
- We’re part of the way through the public “consultation” phase of the NZTA schemes for “improvements” around the Basin Reserve, and so far we’ve only heard one side of the story. For whatever reasons, political, Machiavellian, or incompetence, only the “two options” have been proffered to the public by the roading lobby. That’s a real [...]

Wgtn 2040
- Architectural Centre Inc
- The Wellington City Council has at last started the process of telling you about WGTN 2040, the proposed Vision for the future – 29 years in the future to be exact. It has been a long time coming – a couple of years at least, but this is one of the most important consultations that the Council has ever asked the Wellington public for their opinion on. We would encourage all Wellingtonians to have some input on this – and we would also like to hear your views, so that we can also table a submission from the Architectural Centre.

Triangular Parks
- Eye of the Fish
- With a brief flurry of media attention last week, and typical fluffy media attention more on Miley Cyrus than the ideas inside, the Wellington 2040 vision was confirmed by a Council meeting. Today, there will be the opening of two container consultation stations (one in Te Aro Park and one on the Waterfront?) which will unveil some of the report. And finally, next week, the public may get a chance to really see what has been proposed.
