Just Architecture
    • Fale Malae
      • Wellington’s Waterfront is going to be quite full, or so it seems. Yesterday the WCC agreed in principle to the proposed Fale Malae being proposed for the waterfront, or at least for them to go forward to the next phase of planning. This is the same Fale that was proposed for a site up near Parliament (on Bunny St, between the Victoria School of Law in the old Government Buildings, and the VUW Business School in Rutherford House). Evidently someone has ruled that the parliamentary site was unsuitable, and so Frank Kitts Park has been proposed instead.

    • Is the ugliest building in Wellington?
      • Great news that NZ owned TSB Bank has signed for another 10 year sponsorship deal for the Arena on the waterfront but I do think this is the worst building in the city - monolithic, no architectural merit, still do not know how it got oonsent. Needs a wrecking ball through it and a redesign.

    • Triangular Parks
      • With a brief flurry of media attention last week, and typical fluffy media attention more on Miley Cyrus than the ideas inside, the Wellington 2040 vision was confirmed by a Council meeting. Today, there will be the opening of two container consultation stations (one in Te Aro Park and one on the Waterfront?) which will unveil some of the report. And finally, next week, the public may get a chance to really see what has been proposed.

    • Wellington Whare Waka
      • A new building awaits us on Wellington waterfront. Opening early on Waitangi Day this coming weekend, the new Whare Waka is being officially named and declared open. We’re going to devote some room to an an-depth discussion of the building in our next Arch Centre newsletter, due out soon, where we will have a full architectural review, but in the mean time it is kind of hard to ignore - and so this post just touches on the context of its surrounding landscape. Which is, at present, all we can really see.

    • Indoor Stadium options
      • In the interests of being a good citizen, and supporting the search for another possible site for the TSB Arena should it chose to relocate away from it’s foreshore-grabbing frontline position (surely the most pointless place for a ‘black box’ to be), I thought it may be useful to research some other sites around town that have been mooted.

    • Where did I stick my Stadium?
      • Following swiftly on from the news that Wellington Waterfront is even thinking of demolishing the existing stadium, comes the question: If not there, then where? Its clear that the current site can’t cope with much more expansion, given that it is quite a large building already, and I can’t see anyone being particularly happy at the big shed getting even bigger or shedier.

      • The Wellington City Council must have known it was going to be picking a hard road to go down when it proposed Variation 11, and sure enough, the District Plan change is due to go to appeal at the Environment Court.

    • Wellington 2040 - our vision
      • While no one knows for sure, in about 30 years, there are bound to be a few changes. We’ve put together a scenario of what the city might be like then - and included some nice big images for the Council, hoping that they will be as excited by the future possibilities as we are. There is discussion on the Waterfront (like this image of what we think / hope it might be like), as well as discussion on the upcoming Basin Reserve flyover ‘consultation’ and the image that was published by the Capital Times two weeks ago.

      • The results of the competition for the Outer Tee were announced today - this morning, over a very tasty breakfast, with most of the architectural and creative people in Wellington in attendance. The results are that 6 schemes were picked as first place, ie with ideas worth exploring and worth taking further. They are:

      • Something on the crazy entries for the Outer Tee: we noted, a year ago, that there would be strong pressure for whatever went on the Outer Tee to be Iconic. And iconic certainly some of the suggestions are. Other ways to describe other suggestions may be “completely mad“.

    • More Queens Wharf
      • Coincidentally, at long last the Wellington Waterfront Ltd have also posted the entries on line for the Outer Tee of our own Queens Wharf - thank you for taking our subtle hint - and may we say how pleased we are to see the full line-up presented, as Auckland have, on the web for all to see.

    • BLUE SKY the Outer- T Competition
      • One hundred and seventy-six entries have been received for the BLUE Sky the Outer-T competition which closed at the end of August. The competition called for creative ideas for the best use for the Outer-T of Queens Wharf and was open to everyone. We are very pleased with the number of entries we received, and the fact that they came from such a wide-cross section of the Wellington community.

    • Queens Wharf
      • After waiting many years, Wellington Waterfront finally held the long awaited Competition for the Outer Tee. We’ve been holding our breath, waiting to hear what the results of the competition were. How many entries? Any good ideas? Was there an outright winner? Could the judges make up their minds? But since the entry period closed, nothing but Silence.

      • The joy and sense of fun that is the Wellington Waterfront never ceases to amaze me. Today in the local paper, an expose is made on a number of new / newly released projects for the waterfront, of which I just can’t ignore.

      • Outer-T Competition announced Maximus 18-07-09 1 comment competitionwaterfront We’d hoped to be first to bring you details of the competition on the Outer-T, but the Architectural Centre bet us to it. Ideas welcome - closes 24 August. Oddly enough, there’s not a thing on the websites of either Wellington Waterfront or the City Council yet.
