Richmond Range (a primer)
- Wellington Tramping and Mountainneering Club
- We weren’t supposed to be in the Mount Richmond Forest Park – that was Plan C. But the weather had already put paid to Plans A and B. So as we were driving up Staircase Road to the Lake Chalice carpark and a pine tree fell in slow motion across the road immediately in front ... Read more

Carkeek Ridge (and Carkeek Hut)
- Wellington Tramping and Mountainneering Club
- I have been determinedly Tararua hut-bagging for a couple of years now, having realised I’d haphazardly visited about three quarters of them. Carkeek Hut is one of the most difficult to get to being right in the middle of the range with no DoC-maintained tracks to it. I was waiting for a good weather weekend ... Read more

Waipakihi
- Wellington Tramping and Mountainneering Club
- So lucky with the traffic on Friday night! We got to the Urchin campsite at the end of Kaimanawa Road at around 10.15pm. Urchin campsite has ample grassy sites (compared with gravelly Waitaha Valley/Waikoko campsite); it’s about a 10-minute drive between the two. So lucky with the weather, too – a clear sky and no ...
