Wellington is facing rising sea levels
- Bryan Pepperell - Back To The Future
- At the Wellington City Council Strategy and Policy Committee briefing of December 1 we were shown a computer model of the areas of Wellington that would be flooded by sea level rise as a consequence of global warming. One of the areas that may be impacted is the site of the Indoor Sports Centre. There is no doubt there will be consequences that will be beyond our control even if Wellington were to reduce green house gas emissions.

Squidward Tentacles washes up in Houghton Bay
- Keith Johnson
- As we all know (or at least those of us who have small children) Squidward Tentacles is an arrogant and egotistical 'octopus' who lives in an Easter Island moai and dislikes his neighbors (especially SpongeBob) for their child-like behavior. He enjoys playing the clarinet and painting self-portraits. Well, one of his close relatives washed up this rainy morning just down the road from our house at Houghton Bay. Jane helped drag it up the beach.

Review: Clybourne Park
- The Wellingtonista
- In 1959 a couple sell their house. At 3pm on a Saturday afternoon, their neighbours casually call in to see how packing is going. During the friendly discussion information about the buyers is revealed and tempers flare. In 2009 members of a community meet at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon to discuss neighborhood covenants before the new couple in the community start making alterations. Although their lives seem similar on the surface, their motivations are different, setting up conflict.

Orchestra Wellington and MIXT Create Groundbreaking Virtual...
- Orchestra Wellington
- Orchestra Wellington and MIXT Create Groundbreaking Virtual Reality Conductor Experience In a world first, Orchestra Wellington and Wellington interactivecompany MIXT are offering up the best seat in the house, although youwon’t want to sit down! The world premiere of the Virtual Conductor Experience is launching atthe CubaDupa Festival on Saturday 24th March from 12pm, open to thepublic and free of charge. If you stop by its shipping container installation on Leeds Street, the orchestra promises you a mind-blowing virtual arts experience, regardless of whether you’re eight or 80.Along with audio recorded by RNZ Concert, the 360° filming, editingand interactions were done by Wellington VR/AR specialists, MIXT, andputs the viewer at the centre of a symphony orchestra experience, andbrings all the emotion of a multi-sensory challenge.“The finished product immerses you into the world of the symphonyconductor, standing on the podium to lead a 90 piece orchestra as theyperform the powerful Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky in front of afull 2000 person live audience,” says Orchestra Wellington’s MarketingManager and project co-ordinator Marek Peszynski.Orchestra Wellington was an award winner in 2016 with its New Zealandmade 360° video. With MIXT’s help, Peszynski believes it’s gone onebetter with the world’s first virtual orchestra video with a full liveaudience.“We wanted to move away from the novelty factor of VR technology byplacing the user at the centre of a full live concert. That way theexperience really puts people in the moment and feels one hundredpercent real and unstaged."“More importantly we can visualise its use after the installation, with its applications in education and in accessibility of music. Butat CubaDupa we’re inviting everyone to step up and take the challenge, because once you’ve tried it you’re hooked."Following its CubaDupa release, the 360° virtual concert will launchfor free home use later this month and its makers believe its appealwill extend beyond the city’s many lounge-room conductors.

Have your artwork in lights
- Porirua City Council
- Local artists have the opportunity to see their work on display in public and up in lights. Porirua City Council is seeking artists to feature over winter 2024 and summer 2024/2025 in the city’s lightboxes. Each lightbox exhibition will run for about five months, with six works by a single artist or collective on display during each exhibition. The lightboxes were installed in Porirua city centre in mid-2022 to showcase local artists and their work, says Pātaka Art + Museum Director, Ana Sciascia. “They provide an opportunity for curators and artists to exhibit work in a dynamically urban, high-profile environment.”

Thank god that's over
- The Wellingtonista
- I can't claim to speak for all the Wellingtonista, but I have to say it: Sevens weekend is horrible. There's a lot of gushy talk in the main media outlets about how colourful and vibrant and alive the city becomes, but one could say the same about a nasty fungal rash. Many of us who live in the central city can attest to how colourful and vibrant and alive the city is most of the time, and in an a

Review: Lucrece
- The Wellingtonista
- An adaptation of Shakespeare’s narrative poem “The rape of Lucrece” by Binge Culture Collective. It’s a visual+audio installation at the Toi Poneke Gallery plus a live performance on Thursday and Friday evenings. Fiona McNamara’s director’s note states “This production of Shakespeare’s poem claims the text, written by a man in a patriarchal society, as a woman’s story and investigates what happens to performance and to an audience when the female body is present and the male body is absent.”

Affordable housing in the CBD – a pipe dream
- Wellington Scoop
- Partly as a byproduct of the Spatial Plan and partly because of the real-world challenge of trying to find well-priced housing in an increasingly expensive city, the current debates are tending to polarise into the people who want to preserve heritage and the people who want a sensibly-priced place to live. Both ambitions are laudable – but in Wellington, it may well be that “affordable” is not one of the feasible options, no matter how many ratty old flats we demolish.

My Brilliant Divorce Production Diary - Sound Design
- Downstage Theatre Blog
- Sound Designer, Gil Craig, recorded the voice overs on Wednesday morning and supplied a small set-up with the help of House Technician, Marc Edwards. This allowed us to test the recordings on a basic level in the rehearsals. From here Ginette and Geraldine discovered it didn't quite fit the picture they are trying to create. This is a technique often used by Sound Designers to test out their ideas and ensure they are on the same page as the Director.

Numero Uno? Numero no no!
- The Wellingtonista
- When I saw the first issue of Uno on the shelves at the supermarket, I was hoping it would be the Wellington equivalent of Metro - on a good day, not all "Why your kids' school will give you cancer and never let them buy a house" Listeneresque. But it's not. It's really, really not. Instead it turns out that Uno is every bit as advertising-copy driven as the Wellington Guide - without the advantage of at least being Welly exclusive.

7 Point 5 Degrees And Back
- The Wellingtonista
- It's 7.5° and back, a collaborative project by Gonzalez and Wellington artist Alannah Gunter. In Linz, Austria passers-by watch a monitor inside a canal-tube (above) and are in turn watched by a webcam. Placed at 7.5° to the earth, the camera-tube is a virtual tunnel through the earth to Wellington where the live image screens nightly at the Film Archive Loading Bay. A similar camera-tube is installed in Abel Smith street; what it sees is what the Linz passers-by will see.

Sensory experience wows at Pātaka
- Porirua City Council
- If you love cinema, dance, music and theatre, come and savour them all at once in the senses-awakening Where Memories Sleep, currently showing at Pātaka, which comes with live shows. The installation is a stunning cine-dance music production exploring the imagined Antarctic legend of Aurora, created by photographer and video artist Jason O’Hara and musician Warren Maxwell (Trinity Roots, Little Bushman). The work is the result of a 2016 trip to Scott Base where the pair captured a wealth of images and sound recordings.

Laying a campaign trail
- Keith Johnson
- I am afraid that I have become caught up in my electioneering – such that I have now committed myself to walking every street in the Southern Ward, dropping a calling card in every letter box, and talking in an open and friendly way to those fellow citizens who are out and about. Since I am largely a house husband at present and the boys are at school, my week-day mornings are pretty much free. So the map is a report back on progress so far.

Transmission Gully – knight in shining armour or Trojan horse?
- Sustainable Wellington Transport
- I have a friend who lives at Paekakariki. When he bought his house it was a small, quiet seaside town. Now it is a small seaside town, but not quiet. The main road traffic roars past day and night, ruining his peace. And there are many people in Pukerua Bay, Plimmerton, Mana, and Paremata telling the same story. It is these people who have been pushing for the Transmission Gully Motorway (TGM) – the knight in shining armour that will rescue them from the traffic baddie.

Hoea tō waka, row your own canoe
- Capital Magazine
- In a peaceful cul de sac in Newtown, a stone’s throw from the town belt, sits a nondescript brick house that would attract little interest from passers by, except when music occasionally drifts out through the open windows: a scatter of drums, a glittering harp, voices that glide and soar. This is the home of musician Mara TK, his whānau, and his new record label – Meetinghouse Records. Its aim is supporting and releasing indigenous music that, while recognising the past, fixes its vision squarely on the future.

Women's Firsts v Tawa (top-o-the-table-clash)
- Brooklyn Northern United AFC
- Aaaaa…Tawa. The steady sound of motor mowers and small children. The snobby reluctance to be associated in any way shape or form with their close neighbours Porirua. The constant purr of dehumidifiers working tirelessly in an effort to stop mould from coating every household surface. Isn’t it great just not to live there? What would be even greater would be if we were to beat them on Sunday and rob them of possibly the only thing they have to proud of – top spot in the division that contains our team.

MELBOURNE CUP TOURNAMENT 2008
- Waikanae Golf Club
- Building on previous years of experience, the organising committee comprising Stu McLaren (as always supported by Jane), Grant Waterhouse, Barry Lee, Blair Coburn and Paul Charlesworth, created an extravaganza unrivaled on the Kapiti Coast. This year the event included an all day free BBQ (kindly sponsored by Tegal Chicken) and an outside bar (subsidised by DB Breweries) both manned by Stu McLaren. The 14th hole had a “triple your money” opportunity fot those fancying their ability - thanks to Brian Futter. A new innovation this year was a live TAB terminal in the clubhouse - kindly supplied and skillfully manned by the one and only Gary “I REALLY MUST GO HOME” Mabey. Thanks again Chopper!!! Once again Barry Lee organised a very successful sweepstake in conjunction with the Big Race! The main winners being Chris Turner, The Fourskins syndicate and House. Courtesy of PANASONIC and in conjunction with HARVEY NORMAN Coastlands Branch, we were able to showcase a ‘top of the line’ overhead projection unit to provide fullscale race coverage all day! It is with great pride that the organising committee can announce that due to the financial success of the day, this high tech unit is to be purchased and will become a permanent feature of the lounge, to enable vastly improved coverage of future sporting events. Many thanks to ALL who contributed and supported this fine event.

Lunchtime Readings
- Te Pātaka Toi Adam Art Gallery
- Every second Tuesday lunchtime, Christina Barton, Director of the Adam Art Gallery and co-curator of In Relation: Performance Works by Peter Roche & Linda Buis 1979–1985, will select a performance in the exhibition and read the relevant original notes drafted by the artists or compiled by their most assiduous audience member, the critic and curator Wystan Curnow. Her idea is to bring a live dimension into the gallery as a way of animating the documentation on display and sharing first-hand insights in their unedited form. Each reading will be between 10 and 20 minutes with time for questions after.

Waterfront tweaks: Taranaki St Wharf
- WellUrban
- As much as we Wellingtonians are happy to live in a "cold-yet-cultural" city, most of us would have to admit that this "summer" has been pretty gruelling. Which is why yesterday, with it's balmy temperatures and spectacular sunset, seemed to switch so many of us into outdoors mode for one delicious evening. Most of Waitangi Park was humming by about 5:30, but even though the lawn was relatively dry and looking sweetly bucolic with its lush grass and clover, it had attracted a grand total of eleven people, mostly on the berms around the edge.

Live Wellington - a liveable city by design

A City for People
- Decades of inaction have meant house prices are out of control, while old rental properties rot out from underneath us. A whole generation of people are at risk of being forced out from the central city into new suburbs sprawling north, spending hours every day in traffic jams. We believe the Spatial Plan will allow Wellington to plan for the future so that new generations of Wellingtonians can share the city we love, and have a chance to live in a home that is affordable, accessible, healthy and warm.
