Thunderstorms and dehy meals: Travers-Sabine Easter adventures
- Wellington Tramping and Mountainneering Club
- We started our long weekend adventure on Thursday afternoon, catching the Interislander to Picton. Thankfully, the recent technical issues plaguing both the Interislander and Bluebridge ferries (and recent cyclones!) were not an issue, and it was a perfectly smooth sailing. We drove to St Arnaud and pitched our tents at the DOC campground at Kerr Bay ($20). Great ... Read more

Every movement must have a counter movement - more on the move to smaller houses
- Iona Pannett
- Good to see more discussion on the move towards building smaller houses as costs escalate and more Councils move towards denser housing policies. Architects and builders have the ability to design great houses, the issue is whether the market will make the move away from mega houses and whether policy makers can assist with this change. New (temporary) home for Capital E
- Iona Pannett
- Great news that temporary premises have been found for Capital E after their building was found to be earthquake prone. But this is a compromise space so a new venue must be found and space identified for a new indoor play area for the pre-schoolers. Working on the latter issue with members of the community. Government tunnel plans guarantee traffic jams
- Cycle Wellington
- The Government's transport plans for Wellington are a hodgepodge of failed ideas from the 1960s, say cycling advocates. "Everyone, except the Government, knows you simply can't build your way out of congestion," says Patrick Morgan. "Extra car tunnels would attract more traffic, jamming up Wellington streets, adding pollution and danger. It's the opposite of what Wellington needs. It's a slap in the face for Wellington people, who have consistently voted for better public transport, cycling, walking, and affordable housing." He says it's embarrassing that the new Government is dusting off a failed plan that was rejected a few years ago. "Highway tunnels under Wellington are an expensive, unpopular and unworkable plan."

Wellington Motorway Decision Uproar
- Auckland Trains
- The issue of Wellington’s future motorway development is getting hotter. The new Mayor is not a big fan of a flyover near the Basin reserve but a group of her councillors are. Following reports some in the NZTA were getting unsettled about the Mayor’s failure to commit to their plans, the councillors have forced through a special meeting on Wednesday for the council to make a call.

Mount Street Cemetery
- The Mount Street Cemetery was the first cemetery in Wellington for Catholic burials and contains the graves of the first nuns and priests in Wellington. It remained open until 1891 although burials continued in existing family plots until 1954. The earliest surviving grave marker dates from 1851, and the latest from 1954. Although only around 200 headstones survive, it is estimated that there could have been as many as 750 to 800 burials. Many of the early markers were simple wooden crosses, which have long since vanished.
