Kia ora <> The recent Taitonga Southern Region Orienteering Champs in St Arnaud, Nelson Lakes was a stunning part of the country for orienteering. Sadly, I was defeated in the long event when I got into a swamp and was navigating sub-optimally, so a DNF (“Did not finish”) seemed the wisest choice. I plan to go back someday to find where I was supposed to be! Taitonga was tricky but I’ll get the chance to redeem myself at the next major event, our very own Pokapū Central Region Champs in two weeks! I hope to see many Wellington orienteers there. Also coming up are club birthday celebrations, the AGM, and a couple of final favourite events just around the corner. Take a few minutes to make sure these are in your diary. Beverley Holder President Last chance to enter Pokapū 2026! The Pokapū Central Region Orienteering Championships will be held at Waitārere Beach on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 November, with a Middle Distance Championship, Twilight Short event, and Long Distance Championship across some of the country's best dune terrain. This is one of the best events on the Central Region calendar and an excellent opportunity to test your navigation skills against the region's best competitors. Late entries close on this Sunday, 8 November. Find out more and enter now. Enter Pokapū 2026 50 Years of Orienteering Wellington This year marks 50 years of Orienteering Wellington, and we'd love to celebrate with as many members, past members, friends, and family as possible. We'll be on the waterfront at Waitangi Park at 6pm Wednesday 25 November. Courses for all will be followed by a sausage sizzle and birthday cake. This is also an event for newcomers, designed to showcase everything that makes our sport special. There’s a nominal $2 entry and Orienteering Wellington members run free. Read the media release Listen to the RNZ interview Find out more Red Kiwis’ Golden relay—enter quick! Our friends to the north, Red Kiwi Orienteering Club, are also hosting their own fiftieth birthday, Sunday 15 November, at Waitārere Beach. Red Kiwis will reboot their fantastic and fun 2×2 relay that involves teams of two, with each member running two legs. In a variation from its original form, the relay will use two separate maps—one the new version of Prickly Sands used in June, the other a brand new map of Waitārere Beach itself. Entries close this Sunday 8 November. Red Kiwi 50th 2x2 Relay Spring Series: Run for fun or for points! The Spring Series is well underway, with six afterwork events across Wellington and the Hutt Valley. There's something for everyone, whether you're chasing points, taking part for fun, or trying orienteering for the first time. The four remaining events are: Wednesday 11 November – Karori Park Wednesday 25 November – Wellington Waterfront (50th birthday event) Wednesday 2 December – Sugarloaf Wednesday 9 December – Days Bay For those taking part in the competition, your best four results count towards the overall series standings. Start times from 6-7pm. Explore the series AGM and potluck social lunch The Orienteering Wellington AGM will be held on Saturday 5 December at the Ngaio Scout Hall. Please arrive at 11.30am for the AGM so that we can follow this up with a potluck lunch and other social activities. Five officers also need to be elected to the Committee. Our current president Beverley Holder and secretary Lachlan McKenize wish to step down from the committee. Why not consider standing for one of these roles or encourage someone you believe would make a strong contribution? If you're interested but would like to know more, please speak with a current committee member before the AGM. Email Lachlan for more information or a “no commitments” conversation. Additionally, proposed amendments to the Constitution need to be passed. These are administrative and intended to ensure that Orienteering Wellington is recognised as a not-for-profit organisation and exempt from income tax. Proposed Constitution As well as the business meeting and potluck lunch, we’ll award the Fortune Cup for Service, the Endeavour Cup for Performance, and a new cup for the top performer in the Members’ League. The AGM is your opportunity as a member to raise topics of interest with the other members. Please also think about any items that you may like discussed, or motions that may be required and email us to let us know. Wayne Cretney Classic 40th Anniversary & Big Trig The calendar doesn't slow down after the AGM, with two favourite summer events just around the corner. The Wayne Cretney Classic, hosted by Orienteering Wairarapa and Orienteering Wellington, promises another great opportunity for challenging navigation and quality competition on Sunday 29 November. Read the 40th anniversary history. Orienteering Hutt Valley’s Big Trig Rogaine returns on Sunday 6 December for those who enjoy longer-format navigation and strategic route choice.
