Lack of clarity and information in Library consultation document
- 4 Aug 2020
- Wellington Scoop
- Inner City Wellington (ICW) has found a number of issues in the Central Library Consultation document where information is not clear, making it difficult to objectively determine which option to choose. We are seeking clarification publicly as we believe it will not only be beneficial to us in making our submission, but also to others.

Future of the Central Library consultation
- 27 Jul 2020
- Wellington City Council
- The Central Library has been our city’s living room and a vital part of our vibrant inner city for decades. The building itself isn’t safe to use. There are several ways to make it safe for people to be in, which also brings new possibilities in using the space. This is our once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to set up the central library to continue to support Wellington's diverse communities for at least the next 50 years. Before decisions can be made on the future Central Library in October 2020 - we need to know what you think!

The law and the Library
- 19 Jul 2020
- Wellington Scoop
- Our Central Library is hugely missed by so many of us, a place to go, to be, without cost or expectation, a place to learn, a place to find adventure in the pages of a good book, a place that added life to Te Ngakau Civic Square – the heart of our city. There is strong demand ‘to just reopen it.’ Problem is the Council cannot ‘just reopen it’.

The rumours are true
- 18 Jul 2020
- Wellington Scoop
- The rumours are true. For ages, people have been telling me that the city council has been talking to developers about privatising the Central Library building. Each time, I’ve responded with doubt. But this week the plan has become public – and Councillor Fitzsimons who heads the council’s library portfolio says the news has surprised her.

Sep 2019 - Libraries are Us
- 13 Sep 2019
- Diane Calvert
- The closure of the central library in March 2019 was a shock to us all. The decision was made swiftly in the best interests of both Council’s staff and visiting public. It was sudden and the grieving process is still underway, from disbelief, sadness, anger, acceptance through to hope. The central library was not just somewhere with books and magazines. It was a meeting place, it was that warm, dry, and calm space welcoming everyone of all ages across our diverse communities – the community living room. It nurtured learning with from young to old with a wide variety of different activities from baby rock ‘n’ rhyme through to photo booths celebrating the style of dress from the suffrage campaign.
