Committed to compiling a diverse and engaging programme of international arthouse films, the selection this year looks as strong as ever. John Crowley's galvanising realist drama Boy A impressed me immensely last year in the NZIFF, though I felt that it undeservedly fell un

A Brutal Pageant Indeed
- 30 Mar 2009
- Gliding in and out of the adoring crowd, soaked in sweat, their costume make-up smeared and running, and even with bruises clearly rising to the surface of their skin, the skater's faces showed that joyful emotion of exhaustion mixed with elation seen after any tightly fought contest. And that was both the losers and the winners. This was the first bout of the Richter City Roller Derby – Wellington's first roller derby organisation – and so naturally called The Grudgemaker.

Democracy, be very afraid: the argument against “supercity Wellington”
- 28 Mar 2009

The Waiting For God Commission
- 11 Mar 2009
- The Wellingtonista
- Let's have a little competition - the NZ Retirement Commissioner, Diana Crossan, says she's wanted a change of name for the Commission for several years, but no-one has coined a suitable name. Waiting for God, and The Golden Years were suggested at Select Committee, but rejected (Un. Be. Lievable.) We'll think of a prize as we go along, maybe a bag of Kapiti Macadamia nuts, I'm sure we can l

What’s a punga?

Cost of flyover rises by $10 million (Updated)
- 2 Mar 2009
- Save the Basin Reserve!
- In the original consultation documents for the Ngauranga to Airport Corridor Plan, the flyover was being costed by NZTA at $27 million - although they have declined to provide any substantiation for their figures, and are currently claiming "commercial sensitivity" for how these numbers were arrived at. But in the media coverage of the prioritisation of the flyover as the number 2 item on the regional transport wish-list, the cost has inexplicably risen by $10 million, to a quoted $37 million.
