Environmental Health
- Waikanae Golf Club
- In response to concerns expressed by some members about the water quality in the two streams that run through our course (the Waimeha Stream and ‘Black Creek’), the Board asked KCDC’s Environmental Health division to carry out a scientific analysis. The findings reveal that there is no public health hazard; the fecal count in both streams was reported as not significant, but there is a high nutri

A Brutal Pageant Indeed
- Gliding in and out of the adoring crowd, soaked in sweat, their costume make-up smeared and running, and even with bruises clearly rising to the surface of their skin, the skater's faces showed that joyful emotion of exhaustion mixed with elation seen after any tightly fought contest. And that was both the losers and the winners. This was the first bout of the Richter City Roller Derby – Wellington's first roller derby organisation – and so naturally called The Grudgemaker.

Things That Go Bump
- Waikanae Golf Club
- All of us will be pleased to know that the bone shattering experience we have endured as we enter and drive through the carpark will soon, mercifully, be coming to an end. Work on the car park to remove the potholes and reseal the surface in a specially treated metal will begin in about 3 weeks. (It includes the rear driveway.) Democracy, be very afraid: the argument against “supercity Wellington”

- Some of our local civic leaders have, not surprisingly, jumped on the ‘Supercity Auckland’ bandwagon. If Auckland, they say, why not Wellington? Anyone with a concern for democracy in local government should be afraid, very afraid.

Cinephilia: Opening This Week
- The Wellingtonista
- Pick of the week at the movies must be The Wrestler, Mickey Rourke's triumphant return to major leagues after years wandering in the wilderness. It's a comeback of sorts for director Darren Aronofsky, too. His last film, The Fountain, was a strange and beautiful fable about trying to escape death but he's probably best-known for Requiem for a Dream, nine years ago. Rourke plays a rung-out and stru

Weedy ferns

- Chris Horne of the Wellington Botanical Society recently sent me a fern frond they collected on one of their trips. The impetuous passions of “marathoners” on Valentines Day
- Wellington Runners & Walkers (WRW)
- On 14th February 2009 Leang and I were “spicing up” our Valentines night by attending a concert in Chiang Mai, Thailand which was billed as “Romantic Italian and Spanish classical guitar serenades”. However, when parking the family truck at the concert hall, we suddenly both looked at each other, as across the road from us there appeared to be a “gantry” being set up on the University entrance drive-way. In unison we said, “That must be a start/finish line for a race event.”

Basin Reserve Historic Walk
- Save the Basin Reserve!
- On Sunday the Mt Victoria Historical Society hosted a walk around the Basin Reserve, highlighting the heritage of this important precinct. The walk was hosted by Joanna Newman and Alan Olliver from the Historical Society. Thanks to the Wellington wind and the bells of the nearby Carillon, the audio quality is a bit patchy in parts, but the tour is an interesting insight into the heritage of the Basin Reserve.

What’s a punga?
- Te Papa's blog
- “Punga” is a quintessential Kiwi word, used to refer to tree ferns or, sometimes more specifically, the trunks of tree ferns. But, no tree ferns were recorded by James Beever in his book A Dictionary of Maori Plant Names as being called punga by Māori. I don’t know for sure, but I suspect that “punga” [...]

Cinephilia: Opening This Week
- The Wellingtonista
- I expect there'll be an awful lot of disappointed 15 year olds when they discover that long-awaited graphic novel adaptation Watchmen has been rated R16 despite being trailered in front of every big movie since The Dark Knight. Evidently, it earns the rating being every bit as bloody as the book (not to mention featuring 50 foot high blue penises). Director Zack Snyder looks to have used plenty of

Auckland, Wellington and Madeleine Sami's awesome biceps
- The Wellingtonista
- You may have seen the cover of March issue of Metro magazine. Madeleine Sami, hanging off the Sky Tower, looking all glam while holding a miniature Peter Jackson/King Kong. "Auckland rules OK! How Wellington's losing the cultural wars" the headline reckons. Oh noez! Is it true? Are Bats theatre and Te Papa and the City Gallery and the Cuba Carnival mere piffle in the face of the mi

Cost of flyover rises by $10 million (Updated)
- Save the Basin Reserve!
- In the original consultation documents for the Ngauranga to Airport Corridor Plan, the flyover was being costed by NZTA at $27 million - although they have declined to provide any substantiation for their figures, and are currently claiming "commercial sensitivity" for how these numbers were arrived at. But in the media coverage of the prioritisation of the flyover as the number 2 item on the regional transport wish-list, the cost has inexplicably risen by $10 million, to a quoted $37 million.
