Metlink On Demand trial extended to the end of 2024
- Metlink
- Good news for Tawa and Porirua public transport users: the Metlink On Demand trial has been extended to the end of the year. Metlink On Demand is an app-based service introduced to Tawa in May 2022, and extended to the Porirua CBD in June 2023. Passengers can order rides from small buses operating without set routes between around 600 flexible pick up and drop off locations or ‘virtual stops’. Greater Wellington Transport Committee chair Thomas Nash says the regional council’s public transport wing knows the service is well-used and loved by locals. “Metlink On Demand was born out of our commitment to connecting more passengers with public transport,” Cr Nash says. “We knew the Tawa hills and central Porirua were underserviced areas and that Metlink On Demand could help fill this gap.

Return of standard Metlink fares for under 25s
- Metlink
- Fare changes are coming soon for passengers aged 24 and under, following the government’s decision to withdraw funding for age-based concessions. From 1 May 2024, following the rollback of the former government’s age-based concessions on Metlink services: children aged 5 to 16, or older if still at secondary school, will pay half the adult fare, fares for people aged 17 to 24 will return to full price, unless they qualify for an alternative tertiary or Community Connect concession, under 5s will continue to travel for free on all services. Greater Wellington Transport committee chair Thomas Nash says the change will be felt by young people and whānau across the region, who are already struggling with the high cost of living. “I don’t want to end these concessions – we know they have made a big difference to people,” Cr Nash says.

- Faster buses could be the outcome of closer collaboration on bus priority corridors proposed by Greater Wellington, the public transport authority, to Wellington City Council, the road controlling authority. Greater Wellington chair Daran Ponter and Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau have discussed the proposal, after support for accelerating Wellington’s bus corridors was advocated for to ministers and indicated in the draft Government Policy Statement on Land Transport.

- Metlink
- A public transport service for the ride-hailing era is expanding in reach. Metlink On Demand, the app-based, demand-driven bus service, will cover a larger area following a decision by Greater Wellington councillors on 22 June. Metlink On Demand finished a successful 12-month trial on 16 May, having completed over 40,000 trips for the community. The trial will now be extended for another year, and the service will be expanded from Tawa and Grenada North to include Porirua CBD. As the trial continues, Metlink will also assess the viability of extending the service to Aotea and Cannons Creek.

On-Bus Announcements test run on 20 buses in Wellington
- Metlink
- Primarily, the on-bus announcement system makes public transport easier and safer for riders with disabilities and impairments. It also benefits people who are unfamiliar with public transport, anyone catching a route they don’t normally use, and visitors to the region. The system will announce all stops during both off-peak and peak commuter times, because riders that benefit from this system travel during all times of the day.
