Geotagged / Indoor Sports Centre

      • Following on, in a timely sort of manner, and because the Wellington wind has gone away and left us with some perfect walking / swimming / photo-taking weather, I thought it would be nice to have a look at the roof of the new Indoor Sports Stadium in Wellington.

    • Wellington is facing rising sea levels
      • At the Wellington City Council Strategy and Policy Committee briefing of December 1 we were shown a computer model of the areas of Wellington that would be flooded by sea level rise as a consequence of global warming. One of the areas that may be impacted is the site of the Indoor Sports Centre. There is no doubt there will be consequences that will be beyond our control even if Wellington were to reduce green house gas emissions.

    • Indoor Sports Centre
      • The Eye of the Fish has tried to keep away from the whole sorry saga of the Sports Centre, but recent developments deserve a forum for comment. The entire Sports Centre fad has escaped by the Fish, for whom the idea of 12 courts full of screaming netballers sounds more like a living hell than a place we’d ever want to go to. Apparently even 12 courts is a small number, claim the supporters,

    • Good sports
      • There's a Waterfront Development Subcommittee meeting on tomorrow night, and for once, I'm not going to put myself through all that pain. While there's no single development up for specific debate, this time, feedback is due on the entire draft Waterfront Development Plan, so all the interested parties are having their say.Of the 633 written submissions, 604 were about the future of indoor sport given the changes to Sheds 1 and 6; and in particular, most of these called for the ground floor of Site 10 to become the new indoors sports venue, along the lines of what I've also been suggesting.

    • Take The Long Way Home
      • The new indoor stadium proposed by the council near Wellington Airport and some considerable distance from the central city. "I estimate if I start jogging over there on Monday morning I should just make the Wednesday lunch time game" said Hall "but my real concern is after a bit of a run around will I get back to the office by Friday evening".

    • Save Our Game
      • Zephyr Rovers Manager Steve Hall today confirmed he would be making a submission to the Wellington City Council next week to save sport on the waterfront. "The council has decided we need a Hilton Hotel on the waterfront and I have no issue with that" said Hall "but we want to see an alternative venue for sport on the waterfront as we sure can't jog to Kilbernie at lunch time to play in the new indoor facility out there".

    • A sporting site
      • Submissions on the Draft Waterfront Development Plan close on Friday, and while my opinion on most of it is just "get on with it", there's one area where I'll be promoting a specific change. While the ground floors of Sites 8, 9 and 10 have been designated simply as "retail", I think that Site 10 should be explicitly set aside as an indoor sports facility to replace Sheds 1 and 6.

    • Bringing it back
      • As Kegan pointed out, there's a story on the front page of today's Dominion Post about the council reconsidering the placement of the indoor stadium: they're now thinking of putting it on the edge of Harbour Quays rather than way out at Kilbirnie. So it's almost come full circle, as the site is adjacent to the location originally proposed!
