    • Lets get our buses working
      • Both Councillor Nicola Young (Lambton Ward) and I made independent submissions to Greater Wellington’s draft annual plan in regard to their proposal to raise bus fares yet again. If they go ahead, it will be the second year in a row that there have been bus fare increases; this at a time when bus patronage is […]

    • Buses – lets get some action on the do-able
      • I must confess to a feeling of dismay when I heard that Greater Wellington Regional Council had voted in their draft 2014 annual plan to raise bus fares yet again. This is despite continual talk about needing to promote public transport, talk of off-peak reduced fares, free transfers, and reduced youth fares. Wellington bus users […]

    • Something to mull over
      • Having observed a steaming hot urn of it at the Southern Cross on Saturday night, surrounded by blankets and hot water bottles, we want to know: where can one get the best mulled wine in Wellington, how much will we have to pay for it, and approximately what alcoholic percentage will it be?  Do our work for us in the comments section. Thanks!

    • Snapper, re-visited
      • It's been a long time since we've mentioned Snapper in these pages. In the meantime it's become so much of an everyday part of life in Wellington now that it hardly seems worth mentioning anymore. Or is it? Recently we got an email from Snapper asking us if we'd like to come and see what they're up to. It seems they've had a few other things on the go as well as the recent Valley Flyer conversion

The project is being championed by award-winning chef Martin Bosley and Rachel Taulelei of local food company Yellow Brick Road. So, rest assured some fine names are being showcased: Harrington’s, Hardie Boys Ginger Beer, Daisy a Day, Emp

    • Limber and loving it
      • From the folks who brought you Gravity and Other Myths comes a whole new outdoor circus show.  The crazy antics of “The Navigators” will be taking over Queens Wharf Square as part of Wellington's Summer City and Fringe Festivals, 2009. This brand new adventure was inspired by New Zealands sea-faring ancestors and identity as an island nation. Full of spectacular circus mag

    • Seriously good.
      • There's a great line in a Simpsons episode (well there's a plethora of them really) when C. Montgomery Burns is viewing the less-than-flattering nude portrait of him which Marge has painted. In his typically non-plussed manner, he states "I don't know much about art, but I know what I hate; and I don't hate this."Now, I don't profess to know much about art either, but Adagio-Seriously Sophisticated Circus had me enthralled and not thinking about hate one bit. From the opening minute, when each of the performers was introduced to the audience in a sequence which had us in a quandry as to which performer to focus on, to the mirror-image closure, I was amazed, amused, and just plain entertained in a way that I'm not generally accustomed to. But I liked it. A lot.Without being able to properly dissect the performance, to verbalise the nuances of the techniques deployed, or even identify the performers correctly, I'll at least have a crack and break it down to a Monty Burns-esqe critique. Adagio combines live music, comedy, pantomime, dance and most of all (as the name implies) amazing feats of gymnastic ability on an array of 'equipment' (chairs, swings, ropes etc). The two main protagonists were a diminutive male and a blonde female whose pure strength and incredible poise was so immense and impressive that you would think it looked so easy, but then you'd digest what they were doing and imagine trying to do it yourself, summising with a mental "no way!". This was my second experience at Downstage, after the also brilliant Strike earlier this year, and if the quality of these two shows is an indicator of the fare on offer, then I can see myself making more regular visits. And I'd recommend that everyone should get along and experience Adagio... it's been extended, so there's no reason not too. Might even make it back for seconds myself. Thanks to Markus at Downstage.Brett Kennedy

    • snapped? (wha)
      • It's been a couple weeks since we last checked in on Snapper. The Snapper rollout has continued apace, and some of us haven't used our old ten-trips for two whole weeks! (Well, we were excited about this, anyway.) More and more people are boarding buses armed with the cards; and more and more buses (and their drivers) are ready to take them. And in the meantime we've learnt many things.

    • All carnivalled out
      • Well, that was one hell of a party. There was even a bit of politics after all, after it was announced that Falun Dafa had been banned from the parade, and in the end they turned up anyway. There were even some rare and wondrous apparitions during the parade: actual buses!

    • Bus Angst #32
      • Two words: bloody buses. Actually, here's a few more. This particular Wellingtonista had to wait forty minutes last evening for even one bus to turn up on his route. Of course, when one did, it was packed to the gunnels, so it sailed by the stop, as did the next, and the next.

    • Back on track: a missed opportunity
      • A few weeks back, there was an article in the Dominion Post entitled "Commuters return to cars". The trouble was, since it only showed relative figures ("Peak-time passenger growth soared 11.6 per cent in mid-year as fuel prices peaked. This had slowed to about 9 per cent by September."), it was hard to tell whether passenger transport numbers were actually falling, or just growing more slowly.
