    • The Big Lift
      • I have to admit - there’s something special about about getting up at an ungodly hour to do something or see something out of the ordinary. Driving this morning through a beautifully still Wellington morning with no traffic is something out of the ordinary in itself So it was exciting to see all the big trucks, flashing lights and men in reflective vests - I knew I’d come to the righ

    • The Old Shebang of Cuba Street
      • The National Library has joined the Flickr Commons project, whacking up many of their photos on Flickr. At the moment, there's not much from Wellington, but we're hoping that will change as more are uploaded. One particular Wellington delight, however, is a set of photos of a ramshackle house on Cuba Street called the Old Shebang (shebang in this instance means dwelling). And as well as that, Goo

    • Cuba vs Manners
      • So I was thinking to myself, as you do on a fine summer’s day like today: what is it that makes Cuba St so special, whereas Manners Mall just doesn’t cut the mustard? Is it the paving? Grey bricks just aren’t as warm and friendly as the orange hues of Cuba. Is it the architecture? Cuba’s sure is older, while Manners is newer: but is that all there is? Is it the people? Su

    • Major new sculpture for Wellington
      • The Wellington Sculpture Trust is excited to announce the commissioning of a major new artwork by the Wellington-based artist Regan Gentry. The piece, named Subject to Change, has been specifically designed for its location in the Te Aro area, making reference to the changes in the urban landscape of that part of Wellington. It comprises a replica of two walls of a heritage-style building, yet is clearly a large scale work of art.

    • Splish Splash: Bucket Fountain Update
      • There's been a bit of action going on at the old Bucket Fountain, icon of Cuba Street. First, it mysteriously disappeared: We initially thought this was a retro '80s David Copperfield-style magic trick, but it turns out it was just taken down for maintenance. The fountain returned, with a fresh coat of paint, ready to splash the good folk of Cuba Mall once again.

      • So, this is the week I come out of hibernation to resume posting and what do I have to report? Only the bleeding obvious information that the new Bond (Quantum of Solace) is everywhere this weekend and that the only cinema daring to go up against the behemoth is plucky little Paramount which is playing American Teen from today. • Architecture Awards night
      • es, tonight is the night for the architectural community, as the local Wellington region Awards for Architecture and annual knees up are being held tonight. Last year the awards went to the New Dowse, the Masterton Police Station and the Greytown Town Hall, Holiday Inn, the new Maritime Tower, Len Lye’s water whirler, the waterfront refurbishment of Shed 13, and the highly deserved award for Conservation House (which went on to win a Supreme Award by the year’s end), as well as a swathe of awards for some very fine housing. Awards are being held in the very evocatively period Shed 13 tonight - lets hope that the owners have managed to install some toilet and kitchen facilities which are noticeably absent in this picture from last year!

    • Shrinkage?
      • Many people have asked us why the colossal squid specimen was so much smaller than anticipated when we thawed it. Initial reports suggested that the specimen was considerably larger than the final measurement of 4.2 metres in total length. We suspected that the specimen had shrunk (rather than the size being greatly exaggerated!). In order to test our theory we purchased several fresh arrow squid

    • The Little Dog Laughed: Ellen's blog
      • Stupid people make me want to hurt myself. They are everywhere! There needs to be a law, if you are an idiot, you get your tubes tied and are cock chopped off! It infuriates me how much time I waste in my everyday life dealing with total brainless fuckwits! Yesterday in Starbucks – Yes shock horror I get coffee from Starbucks – get over it! I don’t believe in all that globalism bullshit anyways, so, there I was waiting for my vanilla latte hoping that the guy behind the counter would remember me from last week and give me free coffee again, - I don’t know what it is but people just keeping giving me shit at the moment. Anyways so I overheard this lollipop-head barbie telling her friend in Starbucks, that she had come to New York City to ‘Find herself’!!!!!!!!!!!!! what the fuck? You don’t ‘find yourself’ in NYC you stupid horse-face bitch!! The whole point of being in NY is so that you don’t have to even think about that kind of thing, I mean, if you want to put it spiritually or some shit, you come to NY, you stay in NY to ‘loose’ yourself if anything!! What has she been doing here? Sitting in Central Park next to the John Lennon memorial and singing strawberry fields forever??? For fucks sake?? So I leaned past her toothpick of a so called friend and said “Honey take my advice, I think you should just fuck off back to the farm you came from and start looking up your own arse because you’re clearly gonna have more luck there, there’s no room on the subway for fuckwits like you!” They both turned around and stared at me for a few seconds, and then the walking anorexia advertisement says to me ‘NO thanks, we’ve just ordered.” I flicked my cigarette ash into her coffee and walked off. What an Idiot. Later on I’m in Macy’s waiting for the alien behind the Chanel counter to go on her break so I can grab so lipstick and I hear this wrinkly old tart telling her equally as wrinkly and hideous friend that her daughter is getting married in a month but she’s not sure if she can go to the wedding because she can’t get into see her plastic surgeon till December and she is NOT going to the wedding unless she can get her eyes lifted. She then asks the girl behind the Dior counter if she had any “rouge.” I called out to her from my perch “Rouge is what hookers wear!”Stupid people deserve the stupid things that happen to them. Don’t leave your bag open on the counter while you choose your lunch! Don’t get a perm! Don’t go to the movies, sit in the back row and get annoyed if the people around you are having sex. Don’t think that by adding a cherry to my drink you can call it a cocktail and then throw me out of your stupid, hideous 80s décor bar if I throw it in your face. Don’t make faces at “tsk tsk” noises at me if I smoke standing next to your child at the park, Move!! You stupid saggy-tit moron!

Now that’s what I call a helpful public service. • The Mighty Booth
      • After every election there are geographical analyses of voting patterns, inevitably followed by suggestions that certain regions should secede and form their own country. Such analyses are often at electorate level, but there's a lot of fine detail below that, and a cell of socialist insurgents might live just around the corner from an enclave of conservative curmudgeons. So I made the following map of Wellington voting tendencies at a booth-by-booth level.

    • Aotearoa's Hip Hop Queen is Here
      • Gentlemen please bow, ladies curtsey – the queen of New Zealand hip-hop has just arrived. Ladi6 is our leading female monarch of rhyme, and she is about to hold court at the San Francisco Bath House this Saturday night. She’s here to celebrate the release of her debut solo album, Time is not much.  It’s been 10 long years of touring, winning awards and thrilling crowds, But Ladi6 (Real name Karoline Tamati) is finally taking her place on the MC’s throne she was born to. Her musical beginnings signified what was to come.  Karoline originally broke ground as a part of New Zealand’s first, all female hip-hop group Sheelahroc.  Her talents saw her rise up firstly with another collective, Verse 2, and later as a solo artist.  She has supported the likes of the Roots, wowed festival crowds at the Big Day Out, and charmed media up and down Aotearoa (Plus the Aussies!). Now it’s time for Wellingtonians to see their Queen in the flesh, as she lavishes the Bath House with some of the best soul and hip-hop vocals in the country.  Expect a high energy set, with perhaps a few well-known support acts (Scribe, Tyra Hammond and Ricki Gooch all feature on the CD) getting in for a piece of the action. Ladi6 ‘Time is not much’ album release tour:  San Francisco Bath House, Saturday 15th of November. -Darren

    • Die! Die! Die! Play Bodega on Thursday...
      • Dunedin/Auckland group Die! Die! Die! are one of the last young New Zealand outfits that have really interested and impressed me. I've seen them play scores of times, and every single one of those shows has left me feeling exhilarated. The last four or so years has seen Andrew Wilson (guitar/vocals), Michael Prain (drums) and Lachlan Anderson (bass) tirelessly touring the UK and the States, but they're stopping off in Wellington to play a show this Thursday at Bodega while they're back in the country on a nationwide tour. Formed in 2003, Die! Die! Die! play a brilliantly fierce sort of punky artrock. Recalling the style of groups such as Wire, The Gordons, Fugazi and A Certain Ratio, Die! Die! Die! distill the essence of thrilling sharp-edged punk that is sometimes brittle but always riddled with hooks. Their 2005 debut, self-titled album was recorded at Steve Albini's (Shellac, Rapeman, Big Black) famed Electrical Audio Studio complex in Chicago, and Shayne Carter (Straitjacket Fits, Dimmer) produced their 2007 album Promises Promises. Die! Die! Die! have supported Wire (the best group in the world, if you ask me), The Blood Brothers and Slint, and their live shows are always engaging. Raw energy and true spirit is something they excel in. Clearly a band of unselfconscious and real music lovers, there is no posing here - these boys are the real deal. I hear that this might be the last chance to see them for a while before they head into the studio again, so if you like your jeans black and your noise white, go and see them. • MELBOURNE CUP TOURNAMENT 2008
      •        Building on previous years of experience, the organising committee comprising Stu McLaren (as always supported by Jane), Grant Waterhouse, Barry Lee, Blair Coburn and Paul Charlesworth, created an extravaganza unrivaled on the Kapiti Coast.        This year the event included an all day free BBQ (kindly sponsored by Tegal Chicken) and an outside bar (subsidised by DB Breweries) both manned by Stu McLaren. The 14th hole had a “triple your money” opportunity fot those fancying their ability - thanks to Brian Futter.         A new innovation this year was a live TAB terminal in the clubhouse - kindly supplied and skillfully manned by the one and only Gary “I REALLY MUST GO HOME” Mabey. Thanks again Chopper!!!         Once again Barry Lee organised a very successful sweepstake in conjunction with the Big Race! The main winners being Chris Turner, The Fourskins syndicate and House.         Courtesy of PANASONIC and in conjunction with HARVEY NORMAN Coastlands Branch, we were able to showcase a ‘top of the line’ overhead projection unit to provide fullscale race coverage all day! It is with great pride that the organising committee can announce that due to the financial success of the day, this high tech unit is to be purchased  and will become a permanent feature of the lounge, to enable vastly improved coverage of future sporting events.          Many thanks to ALL who contributed and supported this fine event.

    • The Little Dog Laughed starts at Downstage - A note from Director Willem Wassenaar
      • Diane: And that’s how one wins. By shutting up. You can win. And all you have to do is shut up. Don’t say anything. This is where we are in our lives. This world is a brothel. And we are all prostitutes; selling ourselves to fit the ideal image of success and happiness. What is hidden behind the perfect smile of those Hollywood icons we have come to love and hate? They are people at the top of their profession, who have everything, who have achieved greatness… and yet, we love to grab a random tabloid, go to the red carpet pages and put their achievements to the test. Fold the page over those cheesy grins and the eyes start to reveal a whole other story. Compromise ─ I hate that word, as a human being and as an artist. Has our idea of happiness superseded our primal need to love and be loved? The Little Dog Laughed by Douglas Carter Beane presents the façade, the make believe world that we all consume, chew over and spit out in fits and starts. But would we have it any other way? In this dark comedy of manners, we watch in horror as four people make their individual choices to be happy. The truth has consequences; but the lies are a living hell. So, do we shut up in order to win? My thanks to the amazing, brave team of The Little Dog Laughed and Downstage Theatre, and a special mention for my long term collaborator Daniel Williams. This is our last project before this beautiful man heads out into the world to go on outrageous adventures. Let’s hope for the theatre in New Zealand that he comes back. I also wish to thank… (cut to music) Willem Wassenaar Director The Little Dog Laughed

    • The Election Special
      • Feel like the whole Election is becoming a big joke? Have a laugh at its expense (and while you can still afford to) as Jeremy Elwood brings it to the Capital on Friday 7 November. Having spent most of his career earning a reputation as New Zealand's premier topical comedian, Jeremy Elwood is doing what he does best the night before the Election. Forget analysts and dodgy polls, this is definitely to be the most fun to be had when you decide which idiot to vote for. No campaigning, no interviews and no more avoiding questions to get the party message across, this will actually deliver on its promise - to make you laugh. Think of this as a party political broadcast where the focus is on the party, not the political. Elwood has been performing in New Zealand and around the world for over a decade and was most recently seen in Wellington during the NZ International Comedy Festival with his show "Jeremy Elwood's 12 Steps". If ever there was a time and a need for Elwood to comment on the state of the political climate, it is in this election year. This is a one night only performance with support from Chris Brain, early enough to have dinner after work, see the show and be back home for bedtime. Sure to get you thinking, sure to get you laughing. Sorry, no swing seats.

    • Graded RR at Te Horo
      • The first of the graded Road Races is this weekend at Te Horo. Turn left into Te Horo Beach Road (right if you are coming from the north) and park by the boat sales yard. The start is just down the road but the registration will be in the vicinity of the boat yard. For graded road races you race in your own grade so for each grade there is a separate race. Lots of fun on a reasonably flat circuit, I just hope the wind dies down a bit between now and then. If you don’t wish to ride or you know of someone who can marshall on a corner we are a couple of marshalls short at present. Please flick an email to Dave Grimmond or register to volunteer on line so we can run a safe event. Enter on line now.Coffee after the race will be at the Red Café in Te Horo, bring your eftpos card or some cash along. My winter conditioning can vouch for the scones they make at the Red Café!!!Have you paid your subs yet; great to see some more paid up on the weekend, still more to come I am sure. Can you help with organising the two day tour; we need a couple of volunteers to help out.  Please let me know by return email because we need to get this underway very soon if the event is to be a success.Safe riding to you all.RegardsDouglas Mabey

    • Garden Trail
      • The Wonderful Waikanae Spring Garden Trail was successfully held on Sunday the 2nd of November. The weather was threatening on the Saturday, but cleared up for a fantastic day on the Sunday, to allow the viewing of some truly wonderful gardens. It was great to see so many of our members doing the rounds and visiting the gardens. All the gardens were extremely well prepared and presented, and comments received from people viewing these gardens was extremely complimentary. Margaret Thrupp, Lorraine and Malcolm Cubitt with Gwynne Turner at the Cubitt’s garden.

    • Hot theatre
      • BATS Theatre's new play Heat starts this Friday, and has been selling itself on an unusual point: "eco-theatre". The show's lights and sound will be completely off-grid, and the preparations for the sustainable energy sources were visible over the weekend. Such a ploy could come across as gimmicky, but it's designed to mimic the constraints of its setting, an Antarctic survival capsule.

    • BIG BANGS!
      • It's time to celebrate that time when the crazy anarchist tried to blow up British parliament again. The Pelorus Trust Sky Show will be lighting Wellington skies on Wednesday night for Guy Fawkes.  Prepared by world-renowned fireworks maestro Robert McDermott, the show will start at 9pm and will run for about 15 minutes to a soundtrack broadcast on Classic Hits and ZM, with fireworks set off around the harbour. Around 100,000 spectators are expected to show up for the big bangs, so get there early to grab a good spot, or head to the hills for the best views. Also, to get into the party vide, before the fireworks, check out The Ride Of Your Life Spectacle, a three-hour show featuring live music from the Beatles Review and the Beat Girls at Frank Kitts park. This show will also have choreographed water-sports performances from jet-skiers, wake-boarders, Thunder Cats and more. It's to raise money for the Wellington Free Ambulance, so donate a gold coin. This show starts at 6pm. And don't forget that 24-hour liquor ban that applies in the central city area, Oriental Bay and on the Mt Victoria summit, so no sneaky beers. -Stacey

    • Johnsonville Mall
      • In a move to the suburbs, an area not normally frequented by the Eye of the Fish, a Mall is on the menu. Johnsonville Mall, to be precise. And there’s a big fuss brewing. Not about the concept of a mall - after all, there’s one there already. But this one is due to be different, to be bigger. Much bigger
