Die! Die! Die! Play Bodega on Thursday...

- Dunedin/Auckland group Die! Die! Die! are one of the last young New Zealand outfits that have really interested and impressed me. I've seen them play scores of times, and every single one of those shows has left me feeling exhilarated. The last four or so years has seen Andrew Wilson (guitar/vocals), Michael Prain (drums) and Lachlan Anderson (bass) tirelessly touring the UK and the States, but they're stopping off in Wellington to play a show this Thursday at Bodega while they're back in the country on a nationwide tour. Formed in 2003, Die! Die! Die! play a brilliantly fierce sort of punky artrock. Recalling the style of groups such as Wire, The Gordons, Fugazi and A Certain Ratio, Die! Die! Die! distill the essence of thrilling sharp-edged punk that is sometimes brittle but always riddled with hooks. Their 2005 debut, self-titled album was recorded at Steve Albini's (Shellac, Rapeman, Big Black) famed Electrical Audio Studio complex in Chicago, and Shayne Carter (Straitjacket Fits, Dimmer) produced their 2007 album Promises Promises. Die! Die! Die! have supported Wire (the best group in the world, if you ask me), The Blood Brothers and Slint, and their live shows are always engaging. Raw energy and true spirit is something they excel in. Clearly a band of unselfconscious and real music lovers, there is no posing here - these boys are the real deal. I hear that this might be the last chance to see them for a while before they head into the studio again, so if you like your jeans black and your noise white, go and see them.
