    Whenua Whatu: Māori Ceramics from The Dowse Collection

    • This exhibition highlights a selection of uku (clay) works in the Dowse collection by nine Māori artists; Paerau Corneal, Davina Duke, Stevei Houkāmau, Tracy Keith, Manos Nathan, Hana Rakena, Baye Riddell, Aaron Scythe, and Wi Taepa. The title Whenua Whatu describes the weaving together of connections and whakapapa (lineage) that is such an integral element of toi Māori (Māori arts).

    Yhonnie Scarce: Night Blindness

    Derek Jarman: Delphinium Days

    • Artist and activist Derek Jarman (1942-1994) is one of the most important and influential figures in twentieth century British culture. As an early campaigner for the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community and people living with HIV and AIDs, he created art that sought to challenge the normative culture and reigning neoliberal politics of his (and our) times. Jarman’s prolific artistic practice spanned painting, film, installation, writing, set design and performance. Possibly his most enduring legacy is his garden and former home of Prospect Cottage in Dungeness—a refuge and retreat that fuelled his creativity and has become a site of pilgrimage for visitors worldwide. Jarman is perhaps best known today as a pioneer of experimental film, while his fusing of art and activism is especially important in the development of many queer artistic practices.

    Shannon Te Ao: Ia rā, ia rā (rere runga, rere raro)

    • Presented through a unique partnership between Te Tuhi, The Dowse Art Museum and the Office for Contemporary Art Aotearoa (OCAA), Shannon Te Ao’s work Ia rā, ia rā (rere runga, rere raro) - Everyday (I fly high, I fly low) represents Aotearoa New Zealand’s contribution to the 15th Gwangju Biennale Pavilion (2024). This three channel video installation will be part of the Gwangju Biennale Pavilion, taking place alongside the Biennale’s curated exhibition, Pansori, a soundscape of the 21st century, by artistic director Nicolas Bourriard.

    Tau'a'alo: Sione Faletau

    • Using audio from songs and recordings of environments to form digital kupesi or patterns, Faletau has created a unique Tongan visual vocabulary of time and space. Tau’a’alo refers to a chant that expresses the essence of paddling together - a metaphor for coordinated effort. As well as synchronising motion, tau’a’alo are said to ‘lighten the heart and strengthen the muscles’.

    Sisterly: A. Lois White, Rosaleen Norton, Jen Alexandra

    • The Witch of King’s Cross meets the Methodist of Mt Albert. Rosaleen Norton (1917-1979) and A. Lois White (1903-1984) were both artists born in New Zealand in the early 20th century, whose allegorical work often centred around the female body. By the early 1970s, their wildly different life paths saw one artist dismissed as a scandalous occultist, the other as hopelessly conservative and old-fashioned. But the surprising similarities in their work reveal that there is far more to both than wicked witch or prudish painter.

    Unhinged: Opening the Door to the Dowse Collection

Unhinged includes peculiar peeks into the most remarkable corners of the collection like bedazzling ballet costumes, playful paintings and exquisite contemporary glass.
