    • 24-Hour Liquor Ban for Wellington City
      • Wellington City will be under a 24-hour liquor ban as of the 31st of July. Wellington City Council voted on an amendment to the Liquor Control bylaw, which is currently effective from 5pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday until 8am the following morning. That ban is situated upon the central city, Oriental Bay and Mt Victoria Lookout. When the amendment comes into effect, Aro Valley and Central park will be added to those liquor no-go zones.

    • The Thomas Oliver Band
      • The Thomas Oliver Band's fusion of blues, folk, country and rock will be thickening the air of Bodega this Saturday the 28th of June. The band is made of Thomas Oliver on vocals, guitar, piano, harmonica and weissenborn, Steven Moodie on bass guitar and double bass, and Tom Scrase on drums, percussion and backing vocals.

    • A brand new noodle
      • Like ships passing in the night, my sister Lulu returned from London in 1993 just as I was departing on my own pilgrimage to the Old Country. Amongst a raft of useful advice, she insisted I eat at Wagamama - a stylish Japanese noodle shop in Covent Garden. And so I did. And having left Wellingtown just as laksa was making a break for it out of pokey Asian diners, I was wowed by Wagamama's sleek lines, its slick efficiency, and its mammoth bowls of clean, steaming noodles - at only a few bob a pop. It shone like a beacon out of the greasy sea of affordable London eateries. Now here we are with our own brand new Wagamama.

      • Even though this winter hasn't been as harsh as Wellington winters of past, keeping warm still should be a number one priority. Sometimes, this means forgoing cocktails for tim-tams and movies under a soft, comforting quilted blanket (maybe with bunnies on it?), but if you are anything like me usually you can't keep still and are not very good at just relaxing- unless it's a terrible hangover. That's why I'm thinking of taking up knitting so movies, blankets and indulgent biscuits are a little justified. Maybe knitting and its sweet purity will even stop my drinking, either way today I found a new store that may inspire this possible new pastime of mine.

    • Are you taking the piss?
      • If there was ever a game more designed to have the piss taken out of it (Apart from cricket), I’d really like to know.  Rugby is the domain of rather large, testosterone fuelled beast-men, who like to beat the be-Jesus out of each other by aggressively hugging their opponents.  Throw in 44 pairs of shorty shorts, a bit of a dance for our boys beforehand, some rather absurd commentary, and piss take-ability reaches Chernobyl-like proportions. But let’s blow this mama over the top by bringing in a master-piss taker.  Jed Thian (Aka the Jedi) will have rugby-lovers and haters busting their guts in unison, as he delivers the Alternative Rugby Commentary for the 2008 season.  Jedi started dropping his rugby piss-bombs in 2005, with the evening growing each passing year to become an entertainment spectacle of Jonah Lomu-sized measurements. The basic premise involves the live screening of an All Blacks game at the Loaded Hog.  Only, instead of Mr’s Nisbitt and Mexted calling the action, you get Jed, the commentary colossus, calling the play by play from his own, rather demented and funny perspective.  It’s no holds barred, so if you are easily offended, with little in the way of a sense of humour or the ability to fake it - stay at home. For the rest of you fun and fabulous people, the next game kicks off at 7.30 on Saturday night, when the limey fruits (The English) take on the Polynesian plunderers (The AB’s).  Or you can listen to it streaming live at www.arcrugby.co.nz.  Jedi will be ready and waiting. -Darren

      • This Friday the Young and Hungry festival of new works opens at BATS. Young & Hungry started life in 1994 at BATS as a series of one act plays designed to give young people, aged between 15-25 years, the opportunity to partake in a professional theatre environment under the direction of professional theatre practitioners.

      • With Wellington now having its own Paper Bag Princess, there is even less reason to visit Auckland. The second hand clothing store has been hiding down in the corner of Left Bank Arcade for a while now, and rumour on the street is that more and more people are discovering its goodness.

      • It’s been ten years since the Nomad released his debut (Original) album, Movement. Now, Wellingtons own roving beat-master reminds us that things are just cranking up, with a brand new album dropping on the 16th of June.

    • RE: CALL Gray Nicol performs Duck Calling
      • After 30 years in obscurity, New Zealand video artist Gray Nicol has agreed to re-stage his witty and provocative 1978 performance piece Duck Calling, in what promises to be an audacious and wacky one-off spectacle of an event at the New Zealand Film Archive Mediatheatre on Thursday 13 June, from 7 - 8pm.

    • Party with a conscious this Saturday at Bodega!
      • The MDN Charity Gig, at the Bodega this Saturday, is aiming to raise money and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease. It all started when Wellington's Duncan Bayly was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease- a debilitating neurological condition that affects nerves that control voluntary muscles. He has been told he has five years to live. So, he decided to do something for his fellow sufferers, he gathered friends from all over the world to cycle from Vondelpark (Amsterdam) to Victoria Park (London) to raise funds for MND research. This gig at Bodega is for those on this side of the world who want to help out.

      • This Thursday, little ol’Wellington has the distinction of hosting World Environment Day (WED) Awarded to New Zealand by the United Nations, the day is dedicated to raising awareness of increasing environmental problems around the globe – with this year highlighting the destructive force of high carbon emissions.
