Nice trot around Maidstone Park last night, with the Chilton St James team using it as part of their training under Anna Robertson. Can't help be struck by the culling of pinus radiata in parks round the valley - often just when a patch of them gets mature enough to allow some off-track navigation!
Participation in 2007 didn't zoom up like the previous years, but after an extraordinary 2006 it was very similar to 2005. (In 2006 we ran the NZ Rogaine Champs and the NI Sec Sch Champs, whew!) There were 1925 starts, and if you count rogainers in 3hr units we get 2105. At least 75 volunteers made all this happen, thank you!
From humble beginnings in 2000 the Wellington Series now has the luxury of picking and choosing from a dozen venues. Seven have been selected for 2006, and a second long-distance rogaine-style Akatarawa Attack is planned towards the end of the year.
The base in Lower Hutt's Andrews Avenue was a wind tunnel, but bikers said it was much better out there, especially those who chose controls in sheltered places like the Korokoro Stream.
Regulars got a shock when the maps were handed out - 95 controls covering not only Karori to the bus-turn but Wilton Bush and the Skyline Walkway, Tinakori Hill, Gardens, University and Brooklyn right up to Polhill!
It was a beautifully fine, warm and calm day for some relaxed casual orienteering, enjoyed by those below. The most popular course used both Hutt River banks between the Melling and Kennedy-Good bridges ??? occasional forays to controls next to the clear sparkling waters
Bill Edwards overcame a late start and headlamp troubles to narrowly win last night's afterwork rogaine on the Western Hills. Planner Allan Stowell used a mix of suburban control sites and ribboned rural features in Belmont Regional Park.
Craig Starnes was first past the post at Mt Victoria today to take the Wellington Series win. In the womens class a coalition has been formed between Jo Forbes who won today's event and Jenny Visser who as course planner picked up winner's points too.
Fantastic weather has become a legend at afterwork rogaines and last night was another beauty. Controls from the Massey Memorial in the north to the Ataturk in the south; nicely judged with Andy Foster and Greg Thurlow scoring 80% of max.
St Pats Forest offers perhaps the least scope of any of our MTBO areas for varying the courses from event to event. And yet Graeme Silcock set some excellent courses which had riders scratching their helmets for most of the way.

Have your say on the Freyberg St Neighbourhood Street trial! The changes we made need a permanent solution, and Council needs to make a decision about the trial's future.
We’re proposing changes to strengthen the public transport network and respond to passenger demand. Have your say on the Harbour Quays and Eastern Bus Corridor projects.
