Interview with ARJUNA OAKES
- Orchestra Wellington
- Talk to us about your upcoming piece, Safe Way To Fall, performed next month with Orchestra Wellington “Safe Way To Fall” is a song John and I wrote at the end of October 2021, roughly a year and a half ago. John has a place in Waitārere on the coast, we had a few days there and wrote some songs together. The first time I’d met John was through being a recipient of the Arts Foundation Springboard award where he was my mentor, but this was the first time where we worked together in direct collaboration.

Interview with JOHN PSATHAS
- Orchestra Wellington
- Hi, John, thanks so much for joining us. Lovely to have you here. A few questions ahead of your piece with us on June 3rd. Firstly, if you could just talk to us about how everything's going – we’re very, very excited. Thank you. For me, it's a big occasion having Zahara played again. The history of it, is that I had written an earlier saxophone concerto for legendary player Michael Brecker, the jazz musician who has since passed away, and the premiere of that was one of the big moments of my life.

A Word From Maestro...
- Orchestra Wellington
- Art Music has always straddled the divide between two fundamental forces - the Apollonian and Dionysian. To Apollonian composers, music can only express itself. But the Dionysians find inspiration within themselves: their inner visions. In 2023 your orchestra presents an extraordinary snapshot of these Dionysian composers. Inner Visions features works of genius composed between 1759 and today. They’re linked by the composers’ need to express their deepest emotions, seeking what Kandinsky called “the spiritual in art”.
