A hard look in the mirror
- Inside Wellington
- The end of the local election is in sight. Candidates have put their everything into it, and whether or not you agree with their ideas, one has to respect their Mahi, and their courage, especially when fronting a hostile crowd. To all the hecklers, and sh*t stirrers, please go home, you’re not helping the debate moving forward. Whether they are successful or not, all of the candidates who threw themselves in the arena will probably sigh of relief on the night of the 8th of October and treat themselves to a good cuppa.

12%
- Inside Wellington
- A couple of months ago, the Wellington City Council released its 2022 edition of the Resident Monitoring Survey. This document is 36 pages and it’s an easy read. 800 people took part in this ~20 minutes survey, undertaken each year by WCC. I encourage you to read it but be warned: it is a sobering read.

A new bus depot at the Miramar cutting
- Inside Wellington
- One thing that no one saw coming, though, is that these trucks will have to share the road with … no, not bikes, but buses. NZ Bus has indeed lodged a resource consent for a depot along Shelly Bay Road, just after the cutting.

We need an overhaul on consultation
- Inside Wellington
- Meanwhile, the Wellington City Council has launched another consultation. This time, it’s about Shelly Bay road. The question is: what do you think should be done to the windy road between the Miramar cutting and Shelly Bay so that rows of trucks can get there and build Cassel’s vision for this special place?

The CBD is emptying and it is a good thing
- Inside Wellington
- Recently, on the days when I come into the CBD, I am acutely aware of how I am dragging my feet. Coming to town means a noisier environment (in and out of the office) with lower air quality, it costs an arm and a leg, it takes time, and you run the risk of catching a nasty virus. So why bother? It seems that many people have found working from home is much more efficient. It makes sense. As a result, with Omicron looming and rosters being established, coming into the Wellington CBD makes for a very unusual experience: it is significantly emptier. I think this is a really good sign and a step in the right direction. So let’s have a look at why, when possible, Working From Home (WFH) should be strongly promoted and embraced for good.

Asbestos as an excuse
- Inside Wellington
- You may have heard the Wellington City Council saying recently that protesters must leave their occupation at Shelly Bay because of health and safety concerns over the presence of asbestos in a building near the occupation site. Twelve years after this land was transferred from Defence into open public use, and 12 months after the occupation began, the WCC staff suddenly discovered an urgent asbestos health and safety issue. They sent the protesters 24 hours notice of the land being closed and having to leave.

Is WCC abandoning the community on the airport?
- Inside Wellington
- In a post earlier this year, I talked about Wellington Airport’s plan to expand over Miramar’s golf course. This week, as the world painfully tried to reach an agreement in Glasgow, I wrote about the community groups trying to oppose this antiquated project. The Wellington City Council owns a third of the airport and as such, needs to support decisions in the airport’s best interests. But WCC must also support the community’s best interests. It is stuck between a rock and hard place, a situation which will not solve itself anytime soon with the recent decision to not sell its share in the airport.

A story of David and Goliath
- Inside Wellington
- Earlier this year, WCC organised a public hearing about Wellington Airport’plans to expand over the Miramar golf course. Whether you are a keen golfer or not, the fact the airport thought a plane park was the best use of this land, in a climate and housing crisis, was shocking. Greed, unlike the land where the airport is located, does not know any limit, so the airport is trying to push through its expansion.

Three interviews to understand a vision
- Inside Wellington
- A couple of months ago, I started a journey. In the beginning, there was a painting, a fresco almost. I tried to look at all the challenges Wellington was facing, half-way through the term of the city council. Taking a high-level perspective, I looked at how our elected members were helping our city to navigate these troubled waters. I will concede an inclination to look more closely to the East for all the mega-developments lining up on that side of the city.

We need to build a city without noise
- Inside Wellington
- COVID sucks. And with COVID comes lockdown. Lockdown sucks too, except for one thing: how it sounds. I love the sound of lockdown. The silence overpowers everything. It absorbs every noise and exacerbates those of life: birds, people talking, walking, laughing, the waves or the wind. These sounds beautify everything: the light, the colours, the smells. These sounds make you see more, see better. You notice these details, these leaves waving in the wind, the light glowing seemingly through a canopy, and how pure this child laugh can be. You become more aware and more grounded.

The fine art of consultation
- Inside Wellington
- Following years of standstill, of unending consultations, it seems Let’s Get Wellington Moving (LGWM) has now taken a different approach to deliver. A radical one. They came forward with a solution to deliver a safe crossing over Cobham Drive, and started “the consultation”, which can be summed up as: “my way or no way”.
