Finding our voices
- 23 Oct 2009
- Te Papa's blog
- Earlier this week Hongoeka marae in Plimmerton was filled with the sounds of taonga pūoro (Maori musical instruments) – accompanied by the buzzing of sanders and the call of tuis flitting among the flaxes. I was one of twenty Te Papa staff who took part in a three day wānanga on taonga pūoro, tutored by members of Hau Manu.

The best thing to do would be to contact our Education Team to begin with – ask for Riria or Julie. Contact details are on our website. Or feel free to contact me. Nga mihi nui Pamela Lovis ’

- ‘Whoever gets the window washing contract will have a license to print money as that alternating convex / concave facade will be a sod to clean properly ’
- ‘“that is an absolutely appaling subteranean Rat Run, twisting every which way but loose and I wouldnt venture through there without an impending sense of mugging.” Word has it that the final version will be much more direct and legible. And even with the twisty version, I’d hardly be afraid of mugging, any more than in any of the through-block links that join Willis & Boulcott (Grand Arcade) or Lambton Quay & The Terrace (Capital on the Quay etc) at the moment. And if, as suggested, there’ll be a cafe next to the courtyard partway between Willis St and the lifts, then it will be far from unpleasant. ’

- ‘artists impressions coming tomorrow…. hold your excitement… yep – the old building, the Airways bldg, has been stripped to a bare frame. ’
- ‘They’ve taken the facade off the high(er) rise building on the site… the old dull gray one which even the most optimistic person would struggle to find something nice to say about it. But they’re going to reclad, rather than demolish it? Is that what you’re calling the Airways Building, Max? ’
- ‘Love that parking deck. I’m excited – the Western side of lower Willis has always been disappointing to me. There should be more use of the hills/cliffs ala Plimmer Steps (though this is by no means the best utilised public space) – they make for interesting space. In fact, better use of height, in general; bridges, stairs, strange elevators and cafes on viewing decks etc. to take advantage of Wellington’s views.’ Are there many artists impressions floating around? Me, I’m too busy being excited about the Metro possibly being installed around the corner from my house. (I was expecting it to be where the furniture place behind Hallensteins on Cuba, or on that big empty lot on Bute and Vivian, but it looks like it’s going to be the back side of the Bristol Court now – in an area of dense convenience (Nic Nac’s, by the way, has the city’s best pick’n'mix candy – imported from Spain, apparently). There will now be 5-7 grocery type places within ~100m radius. That’s fine by me! ’

Hopefully it will be a clear evening and we’ll be outside with telescopes as well as using the one inside Thomas King Observatory, but if it’s cloudy or wet there will still be activities inside. Cheers Rebecca ’

Betty's - 3 October, 32 Blair Street

- There seemed to be a big ol’ hype machine at work before Betty’s even opened to the public. I guess this could be expected, mostly due to the fact that new bars have been a little thin on the ground in recent times (but boy has that changed, with more rumoured to be on the way for summer).

- God I used to love Cabaret. It was an impressive cocktail bar-slash-music venue that really complimented its neighbouring establishments of Chow and Motel. 2009 brings something different, with the library stepping into Cabaret’s luxurious bar space. My first thought when hearing about the new venue was “what’s with the name?” but in the face of such handsomely titled places as “El Horno” and “Sports Cafe” I was willing to give The Library a pass on this one.

South Coast Surfs Up
- 7 Oct 2009
- Eye of the Fish
- Although not an overly frequent frequenter to the suburbs, there is a certain feeling about being by the beach that we quite like: if we weren’t an urban blog, we’d be a seaside blog. Lyall Bay, home of Wellington’s best surf break, and a special spot for windsurfing and kite boarding, is a virtual paradise right on the edge of the capital city. At the edge of the Cook Straight, at times civilised, at other times wild beyond redemption, Lyall Bay is a fantastic place to be in the ‘burbs. In short, the Fish liked to dine at the Maranui Cafe.

- ‘But then again there is that whole Japanese Temple thing, where the whole temple gets rebuilt every 20 years, and yet overall the temple is 400 years old. In a building like the Maranui, the significant cost in rebuilding will be because of the difficulty in cutting out burnt material like studs etc. Better to just “pull it down and start again”? – Mr Spanky, you may be right ’

Tee Total
- 6 Oct 2009

- ‘Prole – we haven’t put up the other ones in the competition yet, but yes, they would be an interesting contrast. And for once I think that the profession have come out rather well off from this competition, in comparison to the public. Aside from teh school kids, with their wonderfully naive drawings and perceptions of reality, the general public seem to have totally lost the plot. A Rugby Museum. A place for NZ produce, such as NZ fruit juices. A jewish holocaust museum – just explain to me what relevance a memorial made of 600,000 buttons would have to murdered Jewish school children stuck on a wharf in the middle of Wellington harbour? ’
- ‘“And, Pike says, the competition has brought forward entries from parties keen on investing in the Outer T something Wellington Waterfront Limited was hoping for.” (Capital Times) A blue sky concept competition ….. Yeah right! ’
- ‘Love the various design ideas, particularly the one that looks like a huddle of giant glowworms in a sexual frenzy. Truly, I haven’t seen anything so unusual since I stopped taking LSD back at Uni. But here’s the thing: people need to want to *go* there. It has to have shops, places of interest etc, otherwise it just becomes a monument to some architect’s ego. Adding giant glow-worms to Queen’s Wharf doesn’t change the equation. It needs to be a place attractive and habitable by human beings. And it needs to be approachable and integrated with the rest of the waterfront. So I agree with the previous poster: tearing down the ASB monstrosity would help. But I’m sure if we put up these proposals and then have a democratic vote by all of Wellington then the best design will burst forth. This is the way it is with all urban design. Just as it is with art, the masses always have the best sense of taste and aesthetic, not to mention the best long-range vision. ’

Tattoo You Too

- Eye of the Fish
- And so, with a big hello to all the ReMax twitterers out there receiving our feed, we bring you the latest incarnation of the site where the Tattoo Museum was in Abel Smith St - yes, it is now proposed to be the Tattoo Apartment site. Interestingly, it is to be just 4 stories tall - way below the 9 stories that the tacky Orange apartments have achieved just across the street (next to the Southern Cross).

- ‘Hey, great blog. Ive sold Archaus projects for 15 years., including the QBA apartments just up the road…really good to see comment on Tattoo. They want it to be a step up.Mike Dennis & on this, Ash are keen for the right reasons. Hows this for the old days. In 1992 I tried to sell 4 townhouses off the plans just along the road. ( The caryard on corner of abel Smith & Cuba). Area was not the trendy deal of today! For John Robinson. Only got one taker ( the colourful John Hunter, born 100 yards away in Tonks Av) so it was screpped. The Piercing studio building was derelict, full of urine & streetkids. I think it sold (4 flats, trashed, & 3 shops for $325 000) It was I suggested “Colin go back to selling $85 000 cottages in my Vic .No one is going to shift back into town.” Good they were wrong. ’
- ‘Davidp – stick a fan on the ceiling – centrally located moving slowly and quietly ’
- ‘Philip>The double height spaces look really spacious, its a shame we dont see more of them in wellington. My place has the sleeping area on the mezzanine floor and the living area downstairs. I love it for its sheer funkiness, as well as the light and the space. Essentially I have a three room apartment, and two of those rooms are bathrooms. But, and this is a big BUT… the lower area is really hard to keep reasonably warm in winter. By the time it is tolerably warm downstairs, the upstairs is tropical. ’
