    • Fair Trade Fortnight
      • Starting this Saturday, the 3rd of May is Fair Trade Fortnight. Fair Trade Fortnight happens all around the world and it's aim is to promote sustainable and fairtrade to 3rd world producers. We are lucky enough to have a wide range of events happening right here in Wellington over the next two weeks.

    • My Brilliant Divorce Begins
      • With the first few days of rehearsal over, Ginette McDonald and Geraldine Brophy are getting into the swing of things. We now have a vague blocking of almost the entire show and Ginette is quickly memorising her lines, allowing her to truly dive into the rehearsals. A big task for a one woman show.

    • Down but not out
      • Late last year, having only been open since the 1st of June, Taranaki St gem Cubita was closed by a fire (which also took out Burger Fuel). At the time, reports indicated it might not reopen due to a bit of an ambiguous insurance situation but I am pleased to tell you that Cubita is now ready for business, nearly four months after it first closed.

    • The VBC
      • The VBC stands for Victoria Broadcasting Club, and they are Victoria University’s student station. A new programming schedule was launched at the start of term including old favourites and new shows.

    • The Congestion Pricing Roadmap
      • It seems that the roadmap to congestion pricing is itself congested: gridlocked by an array of obstacles and opinions. We have a $200k report/proposal, dense legal obstacles, technical challenges, a mayor that is “not even lukewarm”, and a public that is overwhelming against the issue. So what happens next? Nothing?

    • Record Store Day
      • On Saturday April 19th around the world, independent record stores worldwide are having a combined celebration as part of “Record Store Day”. Participating stores are hosting a day of live music to revel in the beauty that is the local independent record store, and I’m delighted to inform you Wellington’s own Slowboat records on Cuba Street will be joining the party.

    • Life in the City
      • I know we all love trolley buses (and can't wait for the flash new three-axle jobbies to start ripping it up along Kent Terrace) but this must have been horrendous to be involved in at 5.15 yesterday afternoon. And deeply amusing for those of NOT involved, of course.

    • Slowboat essential 50
      • Slowboat records is an absolute Cuba Street institution. I don't actually know how long it has been there, but I can't ever remember it not existing so as far as I know its old. In a good way. Everytime I go past I check out the awesome cardboard cut-out elvis in the window and smile to myself. In an ever changing Cuba Street, Slowboat has been the one constant.

    • Cinephilia: Opening This Week
      • First up, Lars and the Real Girl is delightfully odd indie starring Ryan Gosling as a lonely and damaged young man who finds love on the Internet. With a doll named Bianca. Paramount, Penthouse. Also at the Paramount, just for Wahine Week is a documentary about the disaster called The Wahine Disaster.

    • Rata-Phooey
      • Last night the Great White (and silver tabby) Hunter decided to present me with his latest prey - an enormous rat! Those of you who also live with the hunter/gatherer type will know that sinking feeling that occurs when the...

    • Catch of the day
      • Piscivores rejoice! A couple of local fishing boats have started to dock at Chaffers Marina on Sundays and are selling their wares direct to the public, and it will make a nice complement to the meat & veg at Waitangi Park market.

    • It's how we're drinking
      • Good to see the local hostelries promoting responsible drinking: tonight, Blend are not only offering $5 Jägerbomb tickets, but are hosting a "New Zealand Jägerbomb record attempt" at 9pm. I really don't envy the street cleaners who'll have to deal with Wakefield St tomorrow morning.

    • April means... Vodafone Homegrown
      • As of Friday morning there were only 500 tickets left for Vodafone Homegrown 2008. Considering 800 were snapped up by greedy little monkeys on Thursday, it’s a cinch this is going to be a sell-out. And why wouldn’t it be? Shihad, Kora, Minuit, Salmonella Dub, The Mint chicks, Phoenix Foundation, Tiki, Little Bushman, Concord Dawn, Die! Die! Die! The Black Seeds, Ladi6, and so much more!

    • Chew on this
      • Chews Lane is open, today, at last. The development, under wraps (of sorts) for the last couple of years, has been opened back up to public view, at least on the ground floor. The historic Lane itself has been re-opened, and businesses are poised to open their doors.
