Book fair to raise funds for Oxfam

- There is a book fair in the Ngaio Town Hall starting at 10am this Saturday - 6 March. Organisers want to raise at least $2500 to support Oxfam New Zealand. To donate any unwanted books, DVDs, records or CDs please email Iona - ionam@clear.net.nz . You can also help by coming to the book fair and buying some books, DVDs or CDs. As always, there will be some great bargains.

Box up your Books for the Book Fair

- Downtown Community Ministry needs your books for Wellington’s big annual Book Fair. The Book Fair is held in September at the TSB Arena has a staggering number of books, DVDs, Vinyl records and CDs that are donated each year and then sold to people to reuse and enjoy. Coordinator David Cross says, “It’s a fantastic way of redistributing unused items to people who want them and it raises incredible funding for DCM’s work in the city”. But first Downtown Community Ministry needs to collect the thousands of books and other items needed for the fair. Wheelibins will be placed at churches and community centres throughout the city for people to drop off their books. For a list of these locations please see www.dcm.org.nz

Jenny Bornholdt's New Collection of Poems Launched at Unity Books...

- Wellington poet Jenny Bornholdt is one of New Zealand's best-loved writers and her new book of autobiographical poems The Rocky Shore will be launched at Unity Books on Thursday evening. Wine, nibbles and good cheer will be offered to celebrate the publication, and Bornholdt will be present to give a reading.Bornholdt has a wry, observational writing style, and she often writes about family and everyday objects - the latter which she has a special knack for transforming into objects of wonder. Poems in The Rocky Shore also deal with a time when Bornholdt battled a long-term illness. Her poems are personal yet resonant but above all - warm, funny and insightful.Since she attended Bill Manhire's original composition course at Victoria University in 1984, Bornholdt has continually published poetry collections, from This Big Face (1984) to Summer (2003) and now The Rocky Shore. With her husband writer/artist/curator Gregory O'Brien, she co-edited the wildly popular My Heart Goes Swimming: New Zealand Love Poems, which won the Montana Book Award for Poetry in 1995.Bornholdt's contribution to New Zealand poetry has been acknowledged in the many prestigious awards she has received. In 2002 she was awarded the Meridian Energy Katherine Mansfield Memorial Fellowship in Menton, France (during which the poems for Summer were shaped). - Collections for Downtown Community Ministry's annual Book Fair Fundraiser are underway. I love the book fair, because you name a book and you'll most probably find it there. Plus you get to go shopping and know that all you money is going to a good cause - like addressing homelessness in Wellington. Scattered around town are wheelie bins for people to donate their unwanted books.
